Notes/Commercial Description:
Autumn 2012 and a return to all that is good, black and hoppy. It wouldn’t be a Doctor’s Orders beer if it didn’t mangle a traditional style and then turn it up to 11. Therefore we prescribe Iron Lung, a Black Imperial Pilsner. Too much and you may need the services of an Iron Lung. Iron Lung returns again in Autumn 2013.

Pours a dark chocolatey colour with nice brown tinge. Head is light beige, nice and foamy with good, sticky retention. Nice.

Smells very piney and resiny. Hint of dark chocolate malt plus plenty of hops - peppery with pine needle resin, sawdust and herbal notes. Very appealing, with a great blend of aromas.

Taste is a little bit darker, with stronger roasted malt notes giving bitter chocolate, a hint of char and some toasted grain. Hops are distinct, very resiny and herbal with piquant touches of spice, leather and aniseed late on the palate. Interesting complexity, a bit over-the-top in flavour at times, but it's exciting enough to be enjoyable in spite of its occasional heavy-handedness.

Bit too much fizz; the mouthfeel is very busy and could be smoothed out a bit.

Great beer overall from Doc though - more of his crazy envelope-pushing that, in this instance, doesn't really fall into any easily categorisable style. This really toes the line between drinkable and excitingly weird.

On-tap at the Local Taphouse.

Pours a dark filtered-coffee brown, with a pale off-white, almost pinkish tinged head. Lace is solid when tilted, forming in firm rings. Body is light at the edges, and holds its carbonation well. Looks good.

Nose is pleasantly hoppy, with green, vegetative even slightly sweet herbal characters coming through. Sherbetty lemon/citrus notes shine through as well, with a direct sharp fruitiness that perhaps suggests some Kiwi varieties of hops. Not much in the way of roasted characters present on the nose. Still, it smells great.

Taste is clean and relatively light on the palate—some fruity hops race through the centre, before a more crisp, biting and slightly medicinal bitterness finishes it off. There's a touch of lightly roasted grains on the back, which suggests over-toasted bread or grain husks. Feel is clean, with a sparkling and perhaps overly aggressive carbonation, which is perhaps the most lager-like thing about it.

This is a really nice beer from Doc. The bitterness on the back is perhaps a little too intense, especially when emphasised by the carbonation, but even if it's not that sessionable as a result, it's still great stuff.

This is claimed to be a black imperial pilsener, but it comes off as somewhere between a black IPA and an American black ale. I don't think you can buy it by the bottle. It's on tap at a few hotels around Australia. I had it at The Lion in North Adelaide.

A - Poured nice, dark colour with only a single finger of reasonably thin head which settled down reasonably quickly. Carbonation was sustained and well balanced.

S - Big, scrumptious, delightful nose with lots happening. The smell flows through on the palate.

T - Not too malty. Nice complex fragrant hops. Like an IPA but not. Again, quite complex from beginning to end.

Overall - While this beer would rate well alongside some of the great US black IPA/seasonal/what-have-yous, in Australia this beer is almost unparalleled. I rate it as the best black beer I've had in Australia. Nothing like the stouts or occasional porters you see around. Balanced, interesting, complex, delightful. I could still taste it an hour later.

Styled as an Imperial Pilsner on the tap handle so I gave this as style but not exactly sure how it fits in. Supposed to be a lager version of a black IPA. On tap at Beer Deluxe in Melbourne. From notes.

A - Poured dark ruby. You could just barely see around the edges. Nice carbonation coming up. Two fingers of nice solid, light brown head. Great lace and a film of retention.

S - Roasty with lot's of hops. Like a Black IPA. Earthy. Milk chocolate as well. A neat aroma.

T - Lot's of citrus hops. Roasty with some coffee and chocolatey sweetness.

M - Good bitterness with some coffee in the finish. Strong carbonation and a medium body.

O/D - Really solid. Sweet then hoppy and quite complex. A nice beer. Glad I found it.
