Served in a snifter.

Black! Tan head with nice lacing.

It smells like dried fruit. Alcohol. Roasted malts.

Coffee notes dominate, there is a strong presence of grassy hops as well. The alcohol is prevalent, but not distracting. The fusel heat is good for a winter's day.

It's sticky sweet and good for sipping. Minimal carbonation.

Overall, this beer takes a while to drink. But it's drinkable though not too complex.

2011 Bottle. Purchased at McCoy's public house in Kansas City, Missouri. Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack Tulip glass.

A- Pours a non-transparent dark black, with 1/4 inch of caramel colored head that dissipates quickly leaving some lacing behind.

S- Roasted Malt, Coffee, Caramel.

T- almost the same as the nose. Dark roasted coffee, malts.

M- not too heavy, one step below moderate carbonation. Dry after taste.

Overall- a very drinkable beer, look forward to letting a bottle age and see how it changes. I would buy it again.

served on-tap at McCoy's Public House, Kansas City, MO, into a snifter

Pours a good, inky black color like an impy stout should. The head is that burnt sienna shade reminiscent of beers like Bell's Expedition Stout. A decent amount of head was on this pour, but it very quickly dissipated.

The aroma profile is nothing outside of the ordinary for the style. It's got dark chocolate, light coffee roast, some dark fruits, a trace of steely hop bitterness. The same goes with the flavor of the beer, though that area has a chocolate milkshake flavor to it that I wasn't getting from the nose.

This impy stout is thin-bodied, too thin for me. Some more size would make it a more pleasurable sipper as well as reinforce some of the thick flavor notes. Overall, this is an above-average Imperial Stout that Kansas City should be glad to have brewed in its midst. Solid offering.

Enjoyed at McCoy's Public House poured into a snifter. This beer pours a India ink black with a slight 1 inch head that melted away very quickly, leaving no lacing but some oily legs. The aroma is burnt espresso and dark chocolate with just a hint of bourbon, even though I know its not one of the ingredients. The flavor follows with coffee and chocolate in the forefront with sweet vanilla and cream that lingers. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, well more then a bit. I'm glad to see another local place delve into bigger styles but the recipe needs to be tweaked to be a real monster of a Russian Imperial Stout.
