12oz stubby bottle poured into a Libby globe porter/stout glass. There was a date stamp, but it rubbed off easily as I grabbed it to pop the cap with a church key.

Appearance: Gold-amber with the slight hint of orange. Just the barest level of haze. Nice dense thin white foam. Lots of persistent fine lacing all over the glass. Lots of carbonation coming up through the glass when first poured. Nice looking beer.

Smell: Hoppy - grapefruit only at first. Once fully warmed up, then the barest hint of pumpkin and some nutmeg show up with a really deep inhale.

Taste: Hoppy start (pine and grapefruit), tiny hint of something sweet, and then another hoppy pine bitter finish. A quite strong pine bitter finish. Once fully warmed up you can just barely taste some pumpkin flesh under all those hops, but otherwise the hops dominate this one.

Mouthfeel: Lively carbonation, spicy on the tongue, lots of hop oils sticking to the teeth.

Overall / Drinkability: Very hoppy ale, but the pumpkin is just about completely lost under all those hops. It's an unbalanced ale as the hops dominate all the flavors and aroma; if you hadn't written pumpkin on the label I doubt I would have known, but since there is pumpkin in it, I can say that this is not a good version. The hoppy angle is interesting, but I think the hops paired with this are wrong. I think something more English in hop profile may have worked with this. Maybe. Pine and grapefruit does not. Also needs more malt to balance it out. In the end, interesting, but one is enough and I would not reach for another.

Appearance is golden orange with a terrifically fluffy head that LASTS.

Nose is fresh hops, orange candy, sweet malt, and vanilla.

Taste is initially pumpkin--but light. Hops then come in head first with a big bite--plenty of pine and grapefruit zest.

Mouthfeel is big, but drinkable. Carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is not a complex brew, and it barely registers on the pumpkin scale. But for its nuanced approach to a fall staple, it is refreshing to try.

Hooligan pours from what appears to be an old timey medicine bottle (330ml stubby) with sediment that drifts about the beer like hovering ghosts. Once all the dust settles the beer looks, well, dusty; it's so hazy as to be almost opaque. Almost lemon meringue in colour, it has little orange tone except when held against the light.

North Peak promotes this as a "hoppy" Pumpkin Ale and, indeed, the hops are so pronounced that I can't smell any spices or pumpkin at all. Not even remotely fall-like, this aroma has so much green leafiness and florals that it smells like summer! My guess is Centennial or a similar variety.

The hops are nearly as apparent on the palate, albeit more in flavour than texture; the brewery lists this at a relatively measly 35 IBUs, which seems about right (more Pale Ale than IPA territory, but still appreciable). The impression of leafy greens and herbal and green tea continue, now blended with bready, almost sponge cake-like malts.

The closest this gets to pumpkin pie is the occasional graham-cracker taste from the malts. As for the actual pumpkin and spices, their inclusion is noted only on the label - if it didn't say it, I'd never know. Instead, this is distinguished by citrusy acidity, toasty malt and a resiny aftertaste.

Hooligan strikes me as the poor man's Southern Tier's Pumking - which is actually a huge compliment - in that it's more IPA than actual Pumpkin Ale. For those queasy about squash and spices but intent (for some inexplicable reason) on drinking this style, here's your loophole.

12 FL. OZ. stubby bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It is light orange with golden highlights. It is topped with two inches of beige head.

S - I get a lot of pumpkin pie spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.

T - It starts out tasting like a pumpkin ale with a little hop bite. As it warms the hops begins to stand out a lot more. After a couple the hops almost completely dominate the palate.

M - Moderate.

O - I had been reading about pumpkin IPA's on a thread and thought they sounded interesting. Shortly after that I came upon this beer. It is pretty much what I expected from the hopping of a pumpkin ale. I found it seasonally enjoyable.

A: A modest half finger head was produced when poured into a standard pint glass. the off white bubbles quickly fell leaving a ring around the edge of the glass. The liquid is a copper to pumpkin orange color with a very hazy apperance that I can just bearly see my hand through on the other side. it almost looks like there is an interesting gradiant, layered color affect going on, interesting.

S: Fruity yeast esters on my first impression. A sweet toffee and cinnamon mixed with a subte pumpkin and all spice nose that comes out when the beer is roused. A slight bit of spicey hop character also.

T: Firm bitterness, surprisingly so for the style, followed by a mouth full of all spice and cloves that seems over powering after the bitterness. There is a very low pumpkin flavor in the middle but the spices are definatly dominant in the flavor profile. Hop flavor and fermentation character are hard to detect from all the spice in this one.

M: Very drying mouth sensation despite the low carbonation. its like taking a mouth full of spices (exagerating here). moderate body.

O: Very clowing and spice forward beer with a bitterness that gives the pallet a sensation of heat. Definatly not a fan of it, but It was worth a shot at a hoppy pumpkin beer, kudos on trying something different however.

This beer is on the lighter side for the style, dark yellow with a haze that clears up. The ivory head reaches one finger and good retention is displayed as it falls very slowly and always has a creamy unbroken foam. Lacing is pretty heavy and plentiful.
There's a hoppiness to this beer, yes, but most noticeable is an overall vegetal quality imparted by the pumpkin. It's more strongly hoppy in the flavor, and the perfume and floral bitterness is stronger than in the smell. It's not close to heavily spiced, something like clove coming out in the nose but nothing by way of kitchen spices, cinammon, etc. It's more raw pumpkin flesh but, again, a more vegetal quality. It's okay, but it's not pure pumpkin flesh or pumpkin pie, it's some thing somewhere in between and raw.
The body is lightly crisp with a thin tinny quality to it and a light smoothness that almost verges on thinness as this straddles the line between a light and medium body. It improves as it warms and the crispness picks up, then some spicing can be noticed in the finish.
