Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 18C). Bottle 33 cl - Batch L14-281. AROMA: complex aromas of floral and orange notes. spicy background. low malt character. APPEARANCE: deep gold color and hazy. average white head with medium-low retention. some lacing is present. TASTE: a combination of citrus fruits (oranges) and some floral notes. soft malt background. low intensity alcohols. medium-high bitterness that lingers beyond a dry aftertaste. PALATE: medium body with medium carbonation. efervescente. OVERALL: a good example of a trappist triple with nice aromas and flavours.

Got the Chimay gift box with the special goblet and one of each of their world renowned offerings.

A - Nice deep yellow/gold color. Medium white head with fine bubbles. Slightly cloudy from the yeast still in suspension.

S - Lots of the typical Belgian yeast spice character (phenolic) predominant. Just underneath that is a nice maltiness and some alcohol. No hops but this beer isn't made for it.

T - Very similar to the smell the Belgian character holds true but isn't the only player with lots of malty goodness. It's a complex beer that gets even more complex the more your tongue gets used to the Belgian flavors and it warms pulling you more in to the tripel. It is mostly crisp with a malt character and some alcohol but without any harshness or bitterness.

M - Medium to strong mouth-feel that isn't too cloying. This is definitely the lightest of the Chimay box set in every respect; i.e. mouth-feel, taste, color. Though that attribute lends itself to being very drinkable for an 8% beer.

Overall, a very good beer. Though I said that the flavor impact of the other Chimays made them too much for me to handle more than two in a sitting I feel that this is the exception to the rule since this is light and mostly refreshing but the ABV would catch up with me after just a couple. If you haven't tried this I would strongly recommend it. Even though the Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue) is still my Chimay of choice this tripel is pretty solid.
