From 12/05/11 notes. Got a bottle of this at St. Arnolds on Jefferson Place in Washington, DC last night. Poured into a Chimay chalice.

a - Pours a pale straw yellow color with two fingers of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evidnent. Head lasts for a few minutes and leaves spotty lacing on the glass. Looks awesome.

s - Smells of Belgian yeast, spices, bananas, cloves, light citrus, spices, and bready malts. No alcohol, which is nice. Very nice nose.

t - Tastes of spices, pepper, Belgian yeast, cloves, light bananas, and bready malts. Lots of pepper here which brings it a down a tiny bit for me, as I liked the more fruit and citrus in the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a very good tripel, especially for the price and availability. Little too much pepper in the taste for me, but something I'd certainly drink or buy again if I'm looking for a tripel.

Small bottle poured into a Tulip glass. Batch number is L08-684.

Appearance: Very hazy amber-orange with a nicely dense and persistent white head. Lots of bubbles coming up through the beer if I hold it up to the light and look closely. Some thick strands of lacing noted, but it did have a tendency to slide down the glass back into the top foam. Despite a careful pour, I know some of the yeast sediment came along for the ride and I suspect that is coloring the beer and making it very hazy.

Smell: Yeasty, sweet, fruity (plums), just a hint of orange and phenol. Quite complex, but appealing.

Taste: Complex. Definitely some hop bitterness, with a tiny bit of orange citrus, along with some earthy and spicy notes. Really hard for me to pull apart the flavors here - everything blends together with this beer. The malt is muted with this one; the sweetness in the aroma is mostly missing in the taste but it is just barely there as something yeasty and plum-like. At first I thought the beer needed to warm up more, but even once it warms up a lot, the sweetness is still muted and the flavor profile is still pretty much the same, just warmer.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation that cleans the palate, but does leave some spicy sensation on the tongue. Nice thickness - quite smooth, but I cannot call it creamy.

Overall / Drinkability: Really a complex beer. Good, but difficult to figure out what all I'm drinking here. For all I have heard about this beer, I can say it is good, but I've had better Tripels. Maybe the sediment that came along has muddied the flavors. So in the end - good, just not great. Maybe again with a more careful pour I'll get a different beer.
