Found a special beer here in Shanghai for my 500TH REVIEW!

Poured from the 330mL bottle into an oversized wine glass.

A: The beer is a hazy bright orange color with some lazy bubbles of carbonation coming up. The head was slightly off white and reached a finger and a half but faded somewhat quickly.

S: Very nice and classic aroma of honey and yeast with lots of light fruits. Apple comes to mind and pear. Fresh smelling.

T: Unripe fruits at first then a new hop bitterness in the middle Some Belgian yeast throughout. A bit watery in the taste. Not as much substance as some other Trappists but the taste is still somewhat there. Don't want to compare but it's hard not to.

F: A bit thin.

Overall: A good beer that blows the socks off of many others, but when compared to others in its class (i.e. Trappist beers), it's mediocre. I like the idea of a lower alcohol Trappist. I may get this again because it's refreshing and a good taste of Belgium, but there are lots of better choices out there too. (1,009 characters)

The amazing opportunity to enjoy this monk-only elixir finds me at the tasting room of the most famous of all Trappist brewers in Chimay concluding a very in depth tour. With so much finesse and succulence I can easily understand and appreciate why this beer clocks in under 4%, as a single chalice of the ale is hardly enough.

Doree (gold cap) decants into the chalice with a playful and sprite carbonation that dances about the liquid until the foam separates from the beer and leaves it nearly bright in clarity to show off its shiny golden hue. Ample carbonation fuels the light and fluffy cotton head that captures all the perfumy aromatics to come.

Seemingly of witbier, the aromas of coriander and curacao leap from the rim with a zesty and awakening scent- quite perfumy indeed as the spices are supported with the soft honey suckle sweetness and freshly kilned grain that rounds out the vibrant nose.

Moderate flavors of malt capture the crisp and clean sweetness of honey, powdered sugar, and slight candy. Fresh baking breads, cracker-like crispness, and pleasantly mild grain flavors deliver the briskness of German lagers but the spice/fruit interplay from yeast provides the complexity and balance with only the most modest glimpse into the herbal hop world. The almost-minty, lemongrass and floral character of hops are perfect complements to the coriander and curacao orange peel that provide a juicy and refreshing taste of tangerines and pez candies in the most elegant and delicate portrayal.

Modest in mouthfeel, the zesty prick of carbonation allows for a semi-champagne like lively texture that extends the floral and spicy flavors and minty-warm alcohols well into finish. Ultimately dry and refreshing, the beer seems to dissolve much like cotton candy as soon as the beer hits the middle of the palate and leads to an effortless and digestible beer event.

The first whiff of the soft spices makes me think witbier, but after a few sips, I didn't feel that I needed the unmalted wheat to make any impact at all. A base of pilsner malt and a few other aromatic malts make yet another formidable base beer for these floral and perfumy spice to rise- just another majestic flavor combination that result from the endless artistry of the brewing monks of Chimay!

A very special thanks goes to Fabrice Bordon for an informative and entertaining tour with tasting, and for his gentlemanly companionship for lunch at their cafe. (2,452 characters)

I see pale straw yellow in color with a hazy complexion. There's a quarter inch of eggshell white. I smell pale malt, German aroma hops, and coriander. I taste pure , fresh pale wheat and coriander. The mouth is light, crisp and refreshing. (244 characters)

Poured from an 11.2 oz. bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet glass.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy yellowish golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. One solid finger of white head that slowly fades into a thin patch.

Smell: A yeasty, fruity, and spicy Belgian aroma with hints of citrus fruit and spices. Belgian yeast with hints of clove, coriander, and white pepper. Malt hints of wheat, straw, cracker, and biscuit. Zesty citrus fruit hints of orange, lemon, and pineapple along with the typical Belgian scent of pear, green apple, and banana. Also some hints of floral and spicy hops. Sweet hints of Belgian candied sugar. A very good smell.

Taste: Like the smell previews, a nicely yeasty, fruity, and spicy Belgian taste with good notes of citrus fruit and spices. Belgian yeast with some upfront notes of coriander, clove, and white pepper. Soft pale malt notes of wheat, straw, cracker, caramel, and biscuit. Juicy citrus fruit notes of orange, lemon zest, and pineapple along with some white grape, pear, apple, and banana. Some spicy and floral hops as well. Sweet taste of Belgian candied sugar. A very nice zesty taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a high level of carbonation. Juicy, prickly, and very smooth with a drying finish.

Overall: A really good Belgian Pale Ale from these master Trappist brewers. Very nice juicy citrus bite with a good combination of spices and wheaty malt. A great session Belgian ale. (1,453 characters)

AROMA: fruity and mildly yeasty with some light bread.
Flavor: impressively complex for style. Good balance.

Bottle dated 2007. My cousin shared this bottle with my bro, my wife and I last night. The beer poured a nice bright golden color with a nice white fizzy head. The aroma of the beer was a nice spicy blend with a hoppy nose. The taste was nicely carbonated which I enjoy and it also had a nice malty/hoppy balance. The beer does run off the tongue very quickly after tasting so it doesn't have hte full body that the other Chimay beer do. Still a nice refreshing beer and nice to try something rare. (498 characters)

I had the opportunity to taste this beer on a tasting organized by BA's Jeffo and Doopiedoopiedoo. Actually I already had a bottle on my shelf. It was a gift from the Brabander, as I believe this one is too. This beer was the warmer, the welcome beer.

See for the total beer line up my review of the Brewery - Black Tuesday.

A - A white head on top of a yellow haze. One could also easily say it was amber in color.

S - A nice pine and citrus smell enters my noose, in that exact order.

T - A bit light in body, but yeh what do you expect from a blond. The taste is good however, again pine and citrus.

M - A medium to high carbonation, as goes for the bitterness in the end; also medium.

O - For a light beer its quite good. Thanks Thijs for sharing. (757 characters)

Pours a golden color with a slight haze. A big pillowy white head settles into a light cap with a small wall of lacing on the glass.

The aroma has a big coriander presence. Smells like celery. Typical witbier aroma. There is some white pepper and other general spice.

The taste is of coriander. The bready malt provides a nice honey sweetness and helps to balance out the coriander. The coriander is more mellow with the beefier malt than in a true witbier. Not very sweet so not sure if they used any candi sugar in this one. Not too much depth to this as the coriander dominates the flavor. I am a bit torn as I am not a big fan of coriander but Chimay made a well balanced beer.

The feel is light to moderate with fizzy carbonation. Sweet and spicy on the palate. Drinks well. A bigger body than what I would expect from a 4.8% ABV brew.

A nice beer. Not crazy for the coriander flavor but its well made. (924 characters)
