Dark brown, almost cider-like with a frothy off-white head that continues to ooze. Smell of dried dark fruits and tart apple, along with breadiness and yeast.
Flavors are similar to smell with figs and raisins, and some hops there keeping things balanced. The finish is so abrupt, dry and clean, that it makes it difficult to really mull over the individual flavors.
Mouthfeel leaves much to be desired. Froths as soon as it hits the mouth like no other beer I've had before (improves slightly over the course of the drink). This somewhat obscured my ability to taste the beer.
Tough to knock a standard like this, but should say that I enjoyed the Ommegang and Corsendonk versions of this style much more. Good, but nothing to get excited about.
