750 mL corked bottle, poured into a goblet. This is a young bottle, 'best served before' 2015.
Pours a muddy copper-brown colour with orange highlights under the light. Generates two fingers of creamy, off-white head that gradually seeps away over a period of many minutes, leaving a thin pinky-width cap. Decent lacing. Pleasant aroma but not all that impressive; highly yeasty, lots of figgy, apricot fruity esters with some clove as well. Kind of subdued.
Tasty stuff. Caramel, molasses and bready malts with plenty of accompanying spice, particularly clove but also anise and ginger. Fruity notes as well ranging from red apples and cherries to plums and figs; varied but the spice is a little too prominent and the fruit struggles to come through. Earthy, herbal bitter finish with a bit of warmth from the ethanol. People have told me that this stuff tastes like red wine; I can see the comparison I guess but there isn't a lot of grape or raisin character in my opinion. Medium-bodied, with a solid bite from the carbonation for a nice crisp feel that is thoroughly enjoyable. Very drinkable, almost dangerously so because the alcohol is well-hidden.
Not the best beer from Chimay in my opinion, but enjoyable nonetheless. Definitely worth a try - this is one I plan to try aged in a few years.

I don't think I've had this one since my original review. Another big bottle, this time served at cellar temperature. Chimay Red is a pretty basic Belgian-style ale, with a good mix of fruity esters, sweet malts/sugar and a spicy, yeasty, mildly bitter finish. While I am a big fan of the Chimay blue and white-caps, this dubbel just leaves me feeling... underwhelmed. It's still a solid brew for the price, but it's not a terribly remarkable one. Worth at least one shot; this is a good introductory dubbel/Belgian ale.
Final Grade: 3.94, a B+.
