Notes/Commercial Description:
From the brewery: This special edition is a full bodied and distinctive strong beer developed within the abbey to celebrate and honour the 150th anniversary of the brewery. Produced with 100% natural ingredients, its pale golden robe and champagne sparkle is topped by a rich white head of foam. The distinctive bouquet evokes the rich fruity and complex notes of the Chimay yeast in harmony with a delicate spicy note and the fragrance of fresh noble hops. At 10% alcohol, the flavour is full bodied and complex with a slight but refreshing tang note and a crisp hop finish that will delight the palate.

Poured in a Westmalle chalice, it starts off with a formidable clear white head that gradually sinks down to a nice thick film on the beer that leaves plenty of lacing around the glass.

The first thing I smell is cloves, then bready yeast, honey and more cloves as well as a little fruitiness. Some pepper and booziness in the back.

Still a lot of cloves in the taste but not as strong as the nose, plenty of bread, vanilla and banana to keep the cloves company as well as a well pronounced yeast flavour and some pepper, a little liquorice root and flowery tastes in there as well. I'd try naming more but frankly I'm a little overwhelmed by the complexity of the beer, there's just so much going on.

Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with very noticeable alcohol but without getting syrupy.

Overall this is Chimay white++, stronger, bigger, bolder and more complex. Absolutely amazing and it's reigniting my interest in Belgian style beers.

Poured a pale gold body with massive fluffy head that left lace patches down glass (and took forever to die). The aroma has that Belgian yeast/orange citric twang but it has a good amount of tropical fruit aromas as well. These fruit aromas are sweet and there is also a touch of candi sugar so it's a really sweet smelling beer as the spices are minimal. Beer is smooth and light, a little fuller "fluffy" body from the yeast, goes down easy although the backend is a little dry/boozy at times. That is my only complaint of this beer as I find a great balance between minimal spices and citric hops (orange) with a tropical fruit flavors that add sweetness like pineapple, banana, mango(?). Touches of tart fruits like sour apple are poking around as well.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Huge white head. Hazy orange. Head settles to a pillow of foam and clings inside the glass. Chunky and uneven foam around the edges.

Smell - Lots of phenols. Banana and yeasty esters. Pale malt, pushing into a little bit of fruitiness.

Taste - Bananas dominate. Lots of banana esters. A little bit of citrus, but not enough to be the centerpiece. Fair bit of alcohol in the flavor as well. Sweet in the middle, but finishes dry.

Mouthfeel - Heavy for a tripel. Malty with medium carbonation makes it seem creamy instead of crisp.

Overall - Definitely not worth the price. I expected something remarkable from Chimay, so my expectations were high.

It has strong carbonation, the cork almost shot a hole in the ceiling, but it still pours easily. I was greeted by a fluffy white head that dissipated quickly leaving a nice lacing on the glass. The beer has a clear yellow/straw appearance. Semi-sweet smell (peppermint?), however no specific fruit aromas noted, but there was an almost juicy fruit aroma. Very fizzy mouth-feel and has a tart taste at the end. Malt is the dominant flavor with fermented grapes. Nice dry finish.
