For my wife and I, every time we go to New Glarus we make sure to stop at Puempel's. You won't find anything fancy here, but the owners are great and the food is good. Beer selection could be better, but they always have 3-4 New Glarus brews on tap, as you'd expect from a bar situated so near to the brewery. The prices are very reasonable.
Another reason to check out Puempel's is for the history. It is one of the oldest continuously operating bars in WI. One wall of the bar has hand-painted murals from the early 1900's. The backbar was created by Brunswick in the late 1800's-very early 1900's. It's just cool to check out.

Glad to have stopped in here as Glarner Stube was closed for the season (til March 4th). Passing by it may not look like much (Coors neon), but this is an old school historical tavern with craft beer to boot.
It was the only place in town to drink Cranbic and Cherry Stout apparently, which I was extremely grateful for. The NG Alt on tap was nice to see too, athough the other taps were Spotted Cow, Fat Squirrel, and Coors Light. In bottles, maybe 12 New Glarus varieties, and a smattering of WI craft stuff like Central Waters Shine On, Furthermore Make Weight, Lake Louie Milk Stout, Capital Amber.
The main draw for me was the historical significance of the place. Three early 20th century murals depicting Swiss rural life were dark with decades of nicotine, and were flanked by old framed photos of the tavern and staff from various decades. The crowd was cool, tourists and locals mingling. The lighting was a little too bright for a small town bar on a saturday night though. Service was quick and friendly. A timeless tavern worth returning to whenever visiting New Glarus. Also worth noting, nearby watering hole Toffler's had a couple Central Waters drafts too.

Puempel's sits at the bottom of the hill in New Glarus between the riverside and hilltop breweries. In the oldest building in New Glarus Puempel's is as much a bar as it is a museum of the unique history of New Glarus.
Almost everything in Puempel's is the same as it was over 100 years ago when it opened: the bar, the earth-toned murals on the wall, the old clock, and even, apparently, the ice chest they use (though it's been updated to run electrically). The walls are spotted in old photographs of the bar and New Glarus from the early 20th century.
The selection isn't great, but they always have 3 different kinds of New Glarus brews on tap so it makes a nice place to close up a days trip to the brewery, or a place to head for a drink and a bite to eat after the brewery closes at 4pm. When we were there they were featuring the Spotted Cow, Staghorn and Totally Naked on draught.
After you're done at Puempel's head over to the BP gas station across the street, their selection of New Glarus beer will really surprise you and the guy who owns the place swears up and down that he has the beer cheaper than what even the brewery sells it.
