It was a Saturday evening, my girlfriend and myself decided to go out and see a friend of mine perform with a jazz ensemble he had put together. The venue for the eve would be a bar I'd never heard of before named Dominion on Queen. They apparently specialize in live jazz and blues, my friend having played there several times previous.
Tucked away past Yonge Street, before the DVP on the part of Queen Street Toronto forgot, this little gem of a bar first came into existence as the Dominion Hotel in 1889. Conveniently this hotel also had a brewery attached to it which kept its bar and lounge well stocked. Today the hotel and brewery are toast but the bar is still there serving up fine local beer and food.
The interior is wide open and split into two rooms one with a billiard table and the other main room with the stage and bar. Nice wood paneling and a semi-open kitchen accompany the long wood bar adding to the overall vintage feel of the establishment.
Well with my comrade about to hit the stage time to check out the beers. They have all the tap selections nicely displayed on large chalkboards at either end of the room which was great. It's all craft here with a strong Mill Street presence including the Cobblestone Stout which was nice. Devils pale ale and the Great Lakes pumpkin were also on offering. The nicest surprises on tap were Delirium Tremens and Chambly Noire, the latter which I immediately ordered.
After the first set of jazz my lady was getting a wee bit puckish so we ordered the poutine, which was a cut about the average, using real cheese curds and homemade fries. The staff were very friendly and attentive, especially the bartender who I had an amusing talk with about people ordering bottles of Corona and Canadian when there are all these fine craft beers available... sigh. The prices weren't spectacular akin to those of the Firkin pub chain and their ilk.
Overall a very nice bar and a fine place to have a few good locals and watch some live jazz or blues.
