Programmed with 5 West Coast American hops, HopBot IPA brings out waves of absurd citrus and tropical aroma and flavor.

The Citra, Centennial, Mosaic, Summit and Willamette hops are perfectly balanced by a solid malt backbone.

Appearance - Pours a dark amber with a finger of bubbly white head.

Smell - citrus and earthy hops, caramel malts, tropical fruits (mango).

Taste - citrus and earthy hops and tropical fruits followed by a pleasant sweetness from the caramel malts.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with a lingering bitterness from the citrus and earthy hops.

Overall - An American IPA that has all the elements in place. I was hoping for more of the bitterness from the hops to come through in the taste as opposed to tasting them in the finish. The caramalts provide a pleasant balance to this brew. Just some minor tweaks with this one will make this stand out with all the great American IPA's out there.

Pours a deep copper amber with a medium off white head. Starts with a nice aroma of pine citrus hops, caramel malt, slowly progresses to more of a citrus grapefruit fruity aroma as it warms up. Taste is sweet caramel malt, citrus pine hops with grapefruit notes. Palate is a medium body with moderate carbonation. The finish is caramel malt with moderate citrus grapefruit hops and a mils nutty flavor on the end. A nice good drinking brew.

473 mL can picked up at the LCBO; packaged July 15 of this year if I am deciphering the code properly. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a clear orange-amber colour, topped with slightly more than one finger of soapy, frothy head. It seeps away slowly over the next period of minutes, and in its place a bubbly film remains. Nice swath of lacing. Loving the aroma on this one - lots of juicy grapefruit citrus, in addition to mandarin orange, pineapple and pine resin. The malts are not very prominent, but do provide a slight caramel sweetness that accents the multitude of hoppy notes.

A solid-tasting strong IPA with no major flaws. Bready malt and caramel sweetness provide a typical backdrop, with some apricot as well. I don't know if I'd call the flavour profile complex, but there's certainly a lot going on, as you might expect from a beer with five types of hops - pine resin and citrus pith are the most noticeable features mid-sip, with a more earthy, dank bitterness taking over at the finish. The aftertaste provides a mixture of said earthy bitterness and malty sweetness; no real alcohol flavour, although at 7.1% you might notice it warming your chest a little. On the fuller side of medium-bodied, with a smooth, satisfying mouthfeel and restrained carbonation levels that gently prickle the palate.

Final Grade: 3.90, an excellent B+. HopBot IPA is definitely my favourite Hop City brew so far, though as an unabashed hop head that probably isn't particularly surprising. Personal bias aside, it would be difficult to argue that this is *not* a very well-made IPA, and personally, I feel that it could stand toe-to-toe with several of the heavyweights in this province, e.g. Mad Tom, Boneshaker, etc.. Strong, quite hoppy, and delightfully tasty; this is a beer that all Canadian IPA fans should consider keeping an eye out for.

Single bottle poured into an English pub glass. Color on the dark end of orange amber, with a decent layer of creamy off-white head. Aroma is initially sweet malts, toffee-like, but rather quickly a strong hop note pushes forward, fermented citrus and tropical fruit with some bold floral overtones, rather dank, lush, and medicinal. No shortage of pine resin on nose and palate ... Full on hop bomb here. Grapefruit, orange, pineapple, mango, lychee, and papaya detectable, hints of lime and green banana, but these fruity notes almost get lost in the resinous murk at times. Butterscotch peeks through here and there. The malt backbone is indeed solid but the hop onslaught grabs my attention. This one does grow on me as I drink. Things eventually mellow a bit and start to integrate into a tea-like tannic citrus bouquet. Moderate to thick bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Finishes with some watermelon rind and a dry flinty note. A tad coarse perhaps but there is nevertheless much to like.
