With a light golden colour and naturally cloudy appearance, Lawn Chair “Classic” Weisse is a true Bavarian style Hefeweizen. An unfiltered wheat beer with a spectacular aroma of banana and clove. With a beautiful balance of exotic and spicy notes, followed by a crisp refreshing finish.

A pint at Jack Astors in south Calgary, weirdly the only current outlet in AB for this offering.

This beer appears a cloudy just south of medium pale golden straw colour, with two fingers of tight foamy white head, which leaves some sparse random streaks of lace around the glass as it quickly abates.

It smells of somewhat astringent, grainy wheat, subtle citrus rind, a mild coriander wit (I know) character, and leafy, kind of weedy hops. The taste is sweet, grainy wheat chaff, muddled citrus, somewhat soused, rounded coriander, weak white pepper, and thin earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is damned-near dead, the body an agreeable enough medium weight, and soft and smooth like a bloody teddy bear. It finishes more or less sweet, the wheatiness doing well in such a situation, supported by the same mixed-up spice, and battered hops.

An ok hefe, in that it seems to give off a lot more Wit notes than one would expect. Otherwise, drinkable enough, the blending of admittedly foreign styles to this particular establishment's clientele not really that surprising, yet an agreeable option for the beginning (hah!) of my way too freaking old high school reunion.

C'est What Spring Festival. Unfiltered mango appearance, unfiltered wheat, though average mouthfeel. Some sourness from the wheat. Natural carbonation was suitable. Tasty despite low 9 rated IBU. Surprisingly good drinkability and a nice first beer from this brewery.

Purchased at the LCBO for $2.35 or so for a 473ml can. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well pours with a ton of head that is gone in 10 seconds. Unfiltered and golden good

S- Not much here at all. A bit of coriander but not much

T- Ok but not great. Pretty light and weak. Not much here at all. Sure you can call it a summer beer but there are better.

M- Ok but not all that wonderful. Dryness helps

O- Pretty good but not all that great. Will not buy again that is for sure. Better examples of white beers around for your hard earned money

Food Pairing

This ok white beer will go well with... Monte Cristo sandwiches

Enjoy!!

A - orange yellow - one finger head - some lacing - decent retention but not the foamy head one expects for the style

S - some citrus and wheat malt

T - much the same but subdued with a stale spiciness - perhaps some cloves and orange notes

M - medium body and creamy with a bitter after taste - decent carbonation - dry

O - one of the poorer brews I have had for the style although I have been lucky to have access to some of the best so I may be spoiled - definitely drinkable but with other better options available not likely to try it again

I was very surprised by this beer. It was very good. It has a very hazy, golden brown color and smells delicious. The taste is like it smells with a little more of the alcoholic kick. I compare this to Sam Adams Octoberfest. I had this in a small Canadian bar in Sarnia, Ontario just after the local rib fest.

Cheers!

Tall Can from the Ottawa LCBO for $3 or so

Appearance - Gold colour with an average size fizzy/frothy white head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for 4-5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Cloves, lemons, banana, breads/grains

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste cloves, bananas and lemons. There is also a bit of an earthiness and sugary sweetness.

Overall - Tasty but pretty plain. There are a few flavours there, but none are really pronounced. Probably a good beer for those just getting into craft. Refreshing and worth a try but there are many other beers withing this style that are far more interesting.

473 mL can served slightly chilled. This is a new addition to the craft beer selection at the local LCBO, and it's great to see this operation getting their previously 'tap-only' offerings into more widely accessible tallboys.

Pours a murky straw-yellow colour, opaque with sediment and topped at first with nearly two fingers of puffy, frothy white head. Unfortunately, it fizzles away before my very eyes, resulting in an unimpressive collar and film at the surface. The nose is a bit citrusy, but overall it's disappointingly subdued. Notes of orange, banana and wheaty malt sweetness are about all I can pick out.

Quite light-tasting and approachable. Lots of sweet wheat malts, accompanied by orange and lemon citrus that provide a mildly tart vibration to the flavour. Weakly spicy at the finish, with a touch of pepper and clove. A pleasant, citrusy sweetness clings to the palate briefly after each sip. On the lighter end of medium-bodied, with relatively weak carbonation that gives this one a smooth, somewhat slick feel on the palate.

Final Grade: 3.61, an acceptable B grade. Lawnchair Classic Weisse is a proper-tasting hefe, though without much of the yeasty, spicy goodness or the velvety mouthfeel of the best German examples of the style. Hop City's interpretation is probably more sessionable than my favourite examples of this style, so I will give it props for that with a bumped Overall score. An adequate wheat ale that is worth a shot if you happen to spot it, much like the rest of the beers in Hop City's gradually expanding portfolio.

This golden yellow velvety smooth classic weisse beer has all the fruity overtones of citrus and clove. It goes down smoothly, and has a terrific aroma. I find this particular beer to be very drinkable on a hot summer's day. I find it hysterical that the brand is based around a Lawn Chair, that just made my day when I found it. All of these Hop City brands are fun and engaging.

473 ml can purchased from LCBO. Served cold into a pint glass.

Appearance - hazy yellow in color, not quite as golden as others, capped by about a finger and half of white head, which sadly doesn't make a lasting impression. Bubbles are lively.

Smell- a bit metallic, the clove and banana takes repeated whiffs to come through. Some nice spiciest in there though.

Taste - planty of banana and clove, a touch more on the bitter side for the style. Taste is a shred thin.

Mouthfeel - light bodied but also thin feeling through. Decent carbonation but it is soft.

Overall - a good example of a hefe, but there are other examples that are better. Wouldn't turn it down again, but probably won't go buy it again.

On tap:

Tapped a pale lightly clouded gold with a smallish cap that didn't last. Big bubble artificial carbonation. Looks poor for the style standard.

Aroma was light biscuit some barely detectable fruit and mustiness.

Thin body, thin on the palate.

Biscuity, some twiggy hops no spice or banana to speak of, thin clean lightly dry finish.

A weak representation of the style.

Cloudy straw yellow with a half inch of white foam on top, kind of dense. Fair head retention, a bit of lace. Sour wheat aroma, a bit grassy with banana sweetness, hint of vanilla. Same in the flavour, but balanced more towards the sweetness provided by the grains and the banana fruitiness from the yeast. Mild, but persistent, bitterness with lingering vanilla and a hint of brown sugar. Medium bodied, lowish carbonation. A respectable beer.

Pours a cloudy pale orange-yellow colour with thin white head. No lacing to speak of, but ok head retention. Smell is of mild lemon with some wheat. Taste has no bitterness, but has tart lemon tinge to it. Ok carbonation for the style.

I'm impressed with Hop City in that this and their Barking Squirrel are popping up in many places around Ontario. I'm not as impressed with their beer. They are fine and better than the macro selections, but I can't say much else about them.
