Czech Pilsener |  5.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Light straw in colour, Mr.Huff is a unique blend of the best in German and Czech styles. It has a slightly spicy aroma and pronounced hop tasted that comes from its blend of German and Czech noble hops. Clean, crisp, and refreshing, this pilsner is highly drinkable with a pleasant and mellow hop finish.

Pale blonde, light white head, light lacing. Smell is bready and floral, malty, lemon zest, grassy but there is a muddy earth presence that makes this a little unpleasant on the nose. Taste is bready with chewy malt upfront, quite dry, floral notes and lemon and citrus come out, light bitterness and quite clean. Lightish mouthfeel, medium carbonation, medium body, good feel. This was actually much better than I thought it would be, this is one brewery that doesn't get the credit they deserve.

Enjoyed at West 50 on tap. Though heavily European hopped, and therefore of some interest, this is not the sublime Czech pilsner. Slightly hoppy aroma, along with a contribution of cheese. Decent quafability; thick lace on dark yellow body. Above average bodied.Decent beer.

I'm not a big fan of Pilsner's as a whole, but I did enjoy the Mr. Huff more so than I thought I would. The bright yellow colour, and aroma were appealing, and the after-taste wasn't too bad either. Again I really love the brand's character, and the tap handle is awesome.

On tap @ Jack Astors. Served in pilsner glass.

A - Light straw yellow with half a finger of white head.

S - Slight bitterness up front and a typical pils nose of saaz hops with some bready malts in the background.

T - Slight bitterness up front with some floral notes and a slightly sweet bready malt backbone.

M - Light body with moderate carbonation.

Tried on tap at Hardrock 42 in Sudbury.

Appearance: It has a nice pale yellow/golden colour to it. It has a nice white head that dies down moderatly and has nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of bready malts, spices, lemon and grassy hops.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a bready and grassy taste with nice spice and lemon notes in the back.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a nice overall balance.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavours and aromas.

On-tap at the Mr. Huff launch, 99 Sudbury, in Toronto.

Mr. Huff has more bling than 50 cent! This clear, scrupulously polished lager brims a bright golden and harbors an unremitting culture of bubbles that stir about as if they were being shot through a particle accelerator. Its head is thrown up faster than tacky Toronto condominiums (but looks much more tasteful and will inevitably last much longer).

The brewery considers this "a unique blend of the best in German and Czech styles". What exactly that means I'm unaware and what style specifically it seemed to more resemble in my opinion I'm also unsure, even after countless pints of the stuff. What's most important, however, is that it does smell like a pilsner - not just a pale lager. This has a clean, unadulterated maltiness and even a dash of earthy, lemongrass-like hops.

Those hops don't translate to much bitterness, but are perceptible enough for the finish to favor the beer's grassy, lightly spicy features over its more bready, malty ones. Mr. Huff is also a beer with a solid center (a firm, clean maltiness), vivacious carbonation and even some faintly appreciable water minerals thrown in for good measure. Nothing to dislike here; a much advised alternative to the usual mainstream lagers.

That Mr. Huff will appeal to the average, mainstream drinker is a certainty - it's a clean, mildly flavoured, medium-bodied lager with enough character to appreciate but not too much to intimidate. But that this lager would have any appeal to the more fussy 'beer geeks' was hardly a given. Lo and behold, however, it received a very positive reception, even amongst the most discerning, hard-to-please so-called connoisseurs, myself included.

If you live in a part of the world like me where, unlike in certain European countries, the integrity of the pilsner is not regulated by tradition and honor, and you've become as embittered as I by seeing brand after brand that massacre the style through adulteration and emasculation, then I believe you would feel as I do that the beer world would be better off if more commercially available pilsners were more like Mr. Huff.
