This is a great restaurant in the Upper Kirby District. There are several other bars and restaurants in the same area. A run down, pot hole riddled brick parking lot separates all the establishments. The Hobbit Cafe has a Lord of the Rings theme, and has been at the same spot for over 30 years. The inside is on the smaller side. A maze of cozy little rooms to sit in. Lord of the Rings memorabilia is on the wall (of course the new movie posters). The real charm of the place is outside. A very large patio that wraps around the restaurant with a small outside bar to the left. There are several trees that give the patio and bar a lot of shade. I really unique setting.
The food is great. Lots of sandwiches and seafood. Brunch is served everyday. Burgers of all kinds. Angus, salmon, even buffalo. Mostly simple, but excellent. Service can be slow, but the waiters work hard. There are usually a lot of people to take of. It is not usually over crowded, just never empty.
On to the beer. There are 6 taps. All are local or good US Micros. One Saint Arnold seasonal. Two Real Ale taps. One seasonal, and one Fireman 4. The other three are a rotating selection of other US micros. Last I was there it was Stone Ruination, Lagunitas Brown Sugar, and Deschutes Mirror Pond. On occasion a dirty tap, but not the norm. Usually good quality. There are about 40 beers in bottle. Lots of Stone, Rogue, Trappist, and German beers. A lot of local bottles as well. A small, but excellent selection.
Really one of the best places I have found for a beer and a meal in Houston. Their shaded patio is one of the best place to relax in town. I highly recommend a visit.

A great spot to grab brunch on Sunday's. Service is a little slow, but completely worth the chill ambiance and delicious food. I had one of those "spiritual" beer moments while dining at the Hobbit. They have these amazing apple almond pancakes that paired perfectly with a draft of 512's Pecan Porter!!! I swear the clouds parted and rays of tasty beer sunshine shown down on my plate!!! Great beer selection for such a small place. Friendly servers, Delicious food, and a nice chill place to experience something different than the same old same old.
