Tap @ O'Briens. Sorry to be the wet blanket, but this was a bit much. Pours dark brown with a lighter brown head; like a hot chocolate. Shocker, the taste is... like a cold hot chocolate. Nearly all chocolate and cream, with a hint of bitterness (apparently that makes it a porter instead of a milkshake). I like to give the local boys a break, but I just can't do it with this one.

Poured on-tap at the San Diego Brewing Co brewpub. The beer was poured into a pint glass. It is a black beer, with brown highlights and a dense, cream colored head. The nose is heavy in coffee/mocha smells. The beer has a creamy balance of dark chocolate and coffee flavors. It is dry in mouth for a porter, but full bodied and flavorful. The finish is light and sweet, with a chocolate and coffee balance. This is the best porter in SoCal that my wife and I have tasted thus far! Very flavorful, and an overall pleasure to drink.

Tap handle complete with a Hershey Bar...nice touch.

A-Deep, dark brown with some ruby tinged highlights. Medium light tan head that held on nicely and left decent lace.

S-Healthy dose of chocolate, roasted malts, a bit of coffee and a pleasant underlying sweetness.

T-Bitter dark chocolate with accents from roasted malt. A bit of sweetness, lactose?, comes in at the back end. A mildly burnt quality too.

M-Medium bodied with a rather short aftertaste. A rather dry finish...like baker's chocolate.

D-An interesting and good take on a chocolate porter...certainly not a run of the mill variety.

Sampled at the Blue Palms in Los Angeles, glasses of this were six bucks, Chris Fisher brought this down from San Diego, consumed 9/12/08, reviewed from notes on the back of the paper draft list

A-Dark brown with some red, not quite black, one inch creamy light tan head, decent retention, some lacing
S-Chocolate syrup, roasted malts, mild coffee, some booze, cream, milky accents, and slight nuttiness
T-First thought was Hershey's, the dark chocolate was quite prominent, roasted and sweet malts in the middle, finish is slightly dry but still sweet with some mild hops and burned barley, gets less flavorful as time goes on and loses its edge, that is big complaint for this beer, would have liked to see it hold up more and not just become flat and overly sweet withy cocoa
M-Sweet, roasty, and dry mouthfeel, medium bodied, fairly high level of carbonation for its style, taste does not linger as much as other porters tend to
D-Could have drank another glass of this but that would probably be it, can get heavy on the stomach, smooth and cannot taste much alcohol, goes down easier at a cooler temperature

I was excited to try this after hearing about it at the Liar's Club opening in Alpine, first beer from the brewery I have tasted and it was certainly not disappointing, would drink again, recommended

On tap at San Diego Brewing Co. on 7/11/09.

A - Dark brown/almost black body with a hint of mahogany around the bottom edges and a creamy one-finger cap of tan froth on top that eventually receded fully, leaving thick lacing around the glass.

S - Chocolate and cocoa up front with hints of coffee, toffee and caramel malt. Sweet aroma overall with not much of a hop presence at all. Very malt-forward aroma.

T - Prominent cocoa presence featuring a sweet, genuine chocolate flavor with hints of roasted malt and coffee. Touch of floral hops in the backend, but very faint. This is primarily a sweet porter, but it doesn't dominate to the point of becoming cloying.

M - Medium bodied with a very soft, smooth mouthfeel, perhaps a bit thin and watery overall, but it goes down easily. Sweet on the palate with very minimal bitterness.

D - Nice first impression overall. This is a very solid chocolate porter with an authentic cocoa presence. A little thin, but very tasty.
