Well let's see now...tasted this during primary fermentation and was excited to taste the finished brew. A pleasant, yet expected pleasure, it exceeded expectations. Poured into a pint glass nearly jet black with just less than a 1/2" of tan foamy head. Decent retention with good looking lace clinging to the glass as it goes.
The smell was a bit sweet and roasty to start, with chocolate, toffee, black licorice, molasses and some coffee as well. As it warms, this all comes on with larger flair as the alcohol starts coming through with some authority. It grows as it warms, as it should.
The taste is much the same with a rich toffee and molasses character plowing the way. A nice offset bitterness comes through with notes of coffee, black licorice and bakers chocolate, giving great balance to this stout. The alcohol comes even more into play as it warms, giving the feel of something like 10% ABV or slightly bigger. This is one brew that really grew on me the more I tasted it. Great flavor.
Rich, smooth mouthfeel with complimentary carbonation and full body that pulls the whole brew together in a big way. Super easy to drink and tastes a lot bigger than a stout of 8.5% by volume. It's no wonder that this brew tastes great...it comes from the same brewer of award winning Hopnotic, go figure!
