on tap at the brewpub in San Diego. pours a deep brown color with faint amber highlights and a single finger of tan creamy head. good retention and mid lacings.
aroma is of earthy smoke with chocolate, some roasted malts, and subtle peat undertones. very earthy and peat-like in the nose.
taste is of smoke, some roasted malts and caramelized malts. a bit of a nutty base gives it some body with a satisfying finish of residual malts.
mouthfeel is medium bodied with a silky smooth texture and a crisp finish, leaving the palate relatively clean.
drinkability is good. as far as smoked beers go, this is a very drinkable example. overall the body is a bit thinner than one would expect, but not in a bad way. this beer could bridge the gap between a brown ale and a porter, but the roasted character pushes it over to the porter side.
