In early 2012 we inoculated a small batch of Thor’s Equinox with Brettanomyces and aged it in freshly dumped bourbon barrels. After two years of cellaring, we are releasing only 30 cases, just in time for the holidays. Aging has only improved the delicate Brett nose and brought a rich, smooth whiskey barrel character to this mildly tart ale.

This is a 2012 beer, aged in bourbon barrels for a year, and released in late 2013. Then I cellared it until now.

Talk about a limited release: they made exactly 360 bottles and numbered them. Mine is #72/360.

The brett and the years have turned this Belgian Dark Ale into something pretty tart. It's still got a bourbon character in the aroma and the taste, but that's just one element of what this beer has going for it. It's fruity and tart and perhaps even a little smoky, with that bourbon flavor hanging around in the background. Pretty interesting brew. Kudos to the Odin guys for experimenting!

(And for anyone reading this review right now, I saw on Odin's website that they have a few bottles left that they are releasing now, for sale only at the brewery. )

22oz brown bottle with a vintage date.

Great clarity when brought up to the light, dark leather brown hue shines. Minimal lacing though the barrel aging and higher alcohol are factors there. Big aromas and flavors of the barrel character though not too much Bourbon, just a hint ... it is more charred wood. Pleasing tartness throughout suggest ripe exotic fruit. Alcohol soaked raisins, faint phenols and a floral alcohol character show the depth here.

A very well put together brew, the brewer took time with it ... nothing rushed here and I sat on the bottle for a good while as well which perhaps helped it along as well.
