A big, wide-open, well-lit store, with a medium+ selection. Service wasn't especially good, but wasn't unfriendly.

Selection is definitely better than your average liquor store, but not great. Decent amount of craft US beers, a few imports. Mostly on shelves, though some of it's in coolers. They have a fair bit of some of the more interesting breweries that make it to Minnesota. Mostly 6-packs, a few bombers.

My read is that what they do get in will last a while. So if there's a limited or semi-limited beer that's gone from the well-covered places, this would be a good spot to check. Also worth stopping in to check out the specials they have going on. This is one of those places where I'll drop in if I'm passing by to see what they have, but won't go out of my way to go there, and won't necessarily buy anything.

I have frequented East Lake Liquor for about 20 years, and they are just great. Not a huge store, but for a smaller retail shop, they have a fantastic beer selection, and the prices are good. In fact, their special of the month is really good. (Currently, a 12 pack of anything Summit makes right now for $12 AFTER tax!)

In addition, I have found the staff to be fairly knowledgeable about many craft and local brews. Even thought their cold section could be expanded, I like the prices where they are at, so keeping overhead down, for me, is worth the savings!!

East Lake Liquor is a spacious and tidy retailer located just a stone's throw from Saint Paul in the Longfellow neighborhood of the 'City of Lakes'.

Some might not consider it much to look at from the outside, but the focus on Craft beer is evident from both exterior signage and interior placements and stackers. In fact it was their 'weekly specials' thast first drew me in, with great deals on six packs from the likes of Bell's, August Schell, and Boulevard. When I say great I mean $5.47 for Schell, $6.75 for Bell's, and $6.49 for Boulevard.

Aside from these deals the prices are on-par for what you'll find at better neighborhood and standalone retailers, and likewise the selection is similar to that of e.g. Skol or Marshall Liquor.

On the one hand I was happy to see plenty of fizzy yellow and/or Grandpa brands (I'm just like that), but on the other I was surprised that they haven't yet devoted more cooler space to Craft. The warm section is four shelves about twenty-four feet long, with Craft, Import, and Specialty brands in roughly equal numbers. The breadth of scope here was enough to convince me that they have no trouble moving these brands.

There's plenty of cold beer in the way of standalone coolers and a large cold box at the back of the store. I'll be interested to see what they might've added here on my next visit.

Service is friendly, but struck me as being shy around someone as focused on beer as myself (make of that what you will). It's worth a visit for those who are just passing through on the way between between the Twin Cities, and would definitely be worth a look should you be making a regular visit to The Craftsman.
