A-Pours a dark cherry with a white head that dissipates quickly. Not much lacing or cascading.

S-tart, cherries, hint of sour apple

T-much like the nose as it is tart and sour with flavors of cherry with a hint of oak, and some graham cracker in the finish. It has a great flavor, maybe not as complex as I expected, but its a very full flavored ale that is truly delicious.

M-While its not that thick and has a good amount of carbonation, it has a full mouthfeel

D-I could drink this just about all day. It is delicious and refreshing.

Overall, this was a great experience and would love to drink it again.

Very similar to the beer at Toronado. Even after a weekend full of sours, this was a good one.

Possibly clouded auburn colored beer. Head is a good sized pile of kahki colored tight foam which fades to a sheet and a ring. Sweet and tart cherries, light wood musk, interesting, unique floral, strawberries and cream, and a variety of other subtle aroma nuances. Taste is loaded with tart, acidic cherries, smooth woodiness, all sorts of fermented fruits, packed into a light fluid body. Carbonation is softly blended throughout. Pitted fruits and berries, all soaked in cherry juice and tangy. Mouthfeel is fantastically smooth.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Murky reddish brown. Small white head. Thin collar.

Smell - Smells equally sweet as sour. Deep caramel and brown sugar. Vanilla. Red wine. Oak.

Taste - Tart up front. Cherry-like tartness and sweetness. Vanilla. Oak. Caramel sweetness in the back.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation and medium body. Maybe even medium heavy.

Overall - More sour than sweet, but it's still pretty sweet. I'd prefer a little less sugar, but it's still very nice.

Poured from the bottle into a Rodenbach Grand Cru tulip glass.

A deep muddy chestnut and orange red color for the body, looking quite opaque but up to the light has some lighter color. Muddy appearance, with fine carbonation. Minimal head creation with a faint tan collar, thin not to snapping sounding coming out of the bottle, but no staying power, and some fast rising carbonation.

Classic soft sense of caramel malt, and mellow tartness. Sweet cherry slightly and red raspberry sensing fruit qualities, but fairly mellow. A hint of good acid without a vinegar punch, but seems to be relatively simple.

Palate hits the straight forward notes. A simple body, forgoing thickness and malt cream, leads to a simple tart and malt flavor in the mid palate. Quickly puckering, and a bit wet. Fruity character taken back with a bit of crisp carbonation which jars the palate a bit. Aftertaste of sweet malts comes out a bit gaseous than past vintages, and seems almost a little hot. Good notes of cherry, and classic red fruit, but has some purple sweet grape like quality as well.

A solid Rodenbach, but other vintages I think I have prefered. Maybe another year on this would give it a much more impressive experience, but still solid. Never turn down my Rody... never.

Deep ruby color with about an inch of tight bubbled creaminess that never fully goes away. Lots of spicy wood right away in the nose giving way to strawberries, cherries, floral notes, chocolaty bread, maple syrup, and vinegar. Sharper with a hit of acetone and oxidation when I get my nose right up close. More immediately fruity in the flavor: juicy black cherry, green apple, and lemon followed by smooth vanilla, honey, and an acidic woody funk. Beautifully sour and juicy. Medium bodied, but it feels lighter on the palate with an acidity that leaves the gums and insides of the cheeks dry. Excellent!

MEDIUM SOUR.

I wasn't impressed with this beer. It was a bit of a let down.

It pours a nice light red beer, with little carbonation. Liquid is translucent. Aroma reveals more of the lambic classic smell than of berries or cherries or any other fruits. Taste reveals a somewhat weak red Flanders. I hardly found any difference with the less expensive red Flanders. The oak barrel didn't improve much this beer, and it was almost non existent.

A weak beer, hopefully they release a better batch.

A: The beer is somewhat hazy brownish red in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high beige colored head that died down, leaving lots of wispy lacing on the surface and a thick collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of oak are present in the nose along with notes of sour cherries.
T: The taste is somewhat similar to the smell, but the sour cherry flavors are stronger and there are notes of oak and slight bits of sweetness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and somewhat tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. It also almost feels a little smooth at times.
O: This beer is really a pleasure to sip and savor. Like the other vintage oak aged beers, the taste is similar to the Rodenbach Classic, but all of the flavors are intensified and there is more contrast.

I picked up a bottle of Rodenbach's 2011 Vintage Oak Aged Ale, Barrel No. 95 a couple months ago for $18.99 at The Lager Mill. I've really been getting into the sours lately, but I haven't had many that had a decent amount of age to them and I'm interested to see how this one turns out, so lets see how it goes. 2013 Vintage. Poured from a brown 750ml corked, caged and foiled bottle into a snifter.

A- The bottle looks nice, it's got a clean and classy look to it, I think it's a little eye catching. It poured a nice mahogany color that took on more of a crimson color when held to the light with about two fingers worth of light tan head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it a little bit of patchy lacing behind. This was a nice looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with a sour fruit aroma being the first to show up, there seems to be some nice berry and cherry like aromas coming through with a medium amount of sourness. Up next comes a pretty light red wine vinegar aroma that goes right into the oak which imparts a nice woody aroma. This beer has a very nice aroma that seems to be right inline with the style.

T- The taste seems to be very similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the sour fruit aspects still being the first to show up and they impart a great mix of berry flavors with everything from raspberries and cranberries showing up along with a good amount of tart cherries that lead right into a medium amount of sourness. There might be a slight red wine vinegar aroma, but it's a little more just like red wine and it leads right into the oak which imparts a light woody and oak like flavor. On the finish the sourness lingers a little with a great fruity berry aftertaste. This was a great tasting beer, it never got overly sour and the fruity flavors were great.

M- Smooth, a little refreshing, not too acidic, fairly crisp, slightly dry on the finish, medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. This beer had a very nice mouthfeel that worked well with it.

Overall I thought this was a great beer and I wouldn't say this is a traditional example of the style, but Rodenbach already makes a few of those and this beer does a good job at taking that idea and just running with it and I liked the intensity that it had while it still maintained some decent balance. This beer had nice drinkability, it was smooth, a little refreshing, not too acidic, fairly crisp, slightly dry on the finish not too filling and the taste did a nice job at holding my attention, I think one glass is the perfect amount, but I don't think I would have any trouble drinking the whole bottle, but that would be my limit. What I like the most about this beer was the taste and aroma, they were both really nice and they were both pretty similar. What I liked the least about this beer was that the oak didn't show up just a little more, but it wasn't too big of a deal. I would buy this beer again, but for $19 it would pretty much be a special occasion beer only and I think if it was just a little cheaper I would stock up on it. I would recommend this to any sour beer fan, it's for sure worth a try. All in all I was a little impressed with this beer, I was already expecting pretty good things, but this beer really played to my favor with those great fruity aromas and flavors that had a good balance of sourness to go with it. So far I've learned that these Special releases from Rodenbach have been all pretty good and I'm down to try more in the future. This isn't my favorite Rodenbach beer, but I believe it's now my second favorite and it's up there as one of the better sours I've had. Great job guys, this lives up to being called a world class beer, keep up the hard work.

It pours a clear ruby brown with a heat that quickly disappears. The smell is sour cherries, wood, leather, and delicious. Is delicious a smell? The taste is biscuity, sour cherries, and a really nice balanced dry but malty finish. Its the kind of taste that makes you thirsty for more. Mouthfeel is soft and very slightly carbonated. Overall this is fantastic. This is probably the best I've had of the style.

Light Brown in color slight see through. No head. This beer is described as light bodied but it actually is medium bodied nice color, nice aromatic fruity esters emanating from the beer. From the bottle to the pour it looks and acts like a fine wine. Slightly aromatic fruity character. My wife thought it was raspberry. She has a good palate so I listen to her on this. No hop taste, low bitterness, slightly vinegary, sour going in with a slight sweet fruity, oaky finish. The carbonation in the beer highlights and pushes the flavors to last in your palate. Love the complexity of the malts, fruity and tart, oak finish. This is an outstandingly made beer great for company at dinner. Would go outstanding with fish or light meats such as chicken or lamb. I would buy this beer again.

Serving: poured from a corked bottle kept in my refrigerator since purchase in late 2013.

Appearance: the beer is a shade or two lighter than the bottle it came in. Very clear with deep ruby and garnet highlights. A one-finger light brown head forms and subsides in the space of a few minutes, leaving nothing behind at all.

Aroma : well-modulated tart fruit with a dash of red wine vinegar. Faint woody note.

Taste: Sharply sour - cherries and vinegar. Acidic. Some surprisingly sweet but indistinguishable malt. Slightly bitter (woody?) but more tart on the lingering finish. If this were any more sour, it would not be as drinkable as it is, but it is a finely balanced brew.

Mouthfeel: slightly thin and under-carbonated, though this is not totally unexpected due to the beer's age.

Overall: very nice variation on the Rodenbach formula. Glad to have had it but not in a hurry to track down another one.

The beer pours out with a mid-sized head of tanning bubbles the color of white sand dunes. The head has mild lasting qualities, but eventually settles into a thick scrim around my glass. In color, the beer pours a dark burgundy with touches of ruby. Its body is clean and clear of all particles, but it sits seemingly opaque in the glass due to its darkness. On the nose, this beer screams Rodenbach. Tart cherries, malt vinegar, rich oak, vanilla, leather, and even a touch of earthiness flood the nostrils in funky scents. Caramel makes an appearance as the backbone of the smell, providing a sweet, candied bread quality. The oak is really where the nose shines in character, however, with not overpowering richness that bristles with tannins, coats with vanilla, and eases a light toast into the funky scent of the beer. On the tongue, the beer tastes tart and sweet with a mild bitter tannin bringing balance to the beer. The acidity of the beer is most present at the start and close of the sip, while the sweetness seems to sit happily in the sips middle, blanketed towards the end by the bitters. There is superb balance and rich complexity to this beer. In flavor, it begins as rich cherry pie and leather, this opens into funky barnyard, more cherries, and a healthy dose of oak which brings herbal-bitter tannins alongside rich vanilla to the tongue. The finish is sweet with a final hiccup of tart cherry at its close, and lasts beautifully upon the palate, lingering heavily into the aftertaste with sweet cherry and caramel notes alongside touches of scratchy and bizarrely tasty horse blanket and malt vinegar. In the mouth, this beer feels medium in body with a lighter finish. The beer coats the mouth nicely with a mild carbonation, providing light effervescence and levity to the sip. In mouthfeel, the beer has a slightly syrupy pull to the cheeks while remaining smooth. The barrel definitely provides gripping tannins to the cheeks, and the acidity helps to further pull out the cheeks in a pucker. When the beer has left, the mouth is left with a light pool of acid-cancelling spittle and a slight sticky-sweet resin. Overall, this beer is delightfully complex. Rich oak character, fantastic funk, and subtle sweetness blend masterfully in this vintage. Rodenbach is the master of the Flanders Red, and this vintage ale is a perfect example of that. This beer is a delightful blend of everything that makes a Flanders Red a joy to drink. Vat 95 did very well here.

L - Brown base with a red mahogany hue to it. After the pour, there's a one finger light khaki head that dissipates to a ring around the glass. Not much retention or lacing.

S - Cherry sour, oak and a mustiness to it. Digging deeper, there are some notes of brown sugar, caramel and a light sweetness.

T - Sour cherries and oak hit your palette at first. The brown sugar comes forth mixed with balsamic vinegar notes and a raspberry fruitiness . The sweet & sour are really working here to balance out the beer.

F - On the full side of light bodied with a high side of medium carbonation. It has a wet finish.

O - The beer is unique with a sweet & sour combo I've never experienced before. It was great to drink it from cold to warming up.

Drank from a 1 pint 9.4 fl.oz/750ml corked and caged bottle purchased at Craft Beer Cellar, Belmont, MA
Served in a tulip

The turbid, chestnut-mahogany liquid was capped by a thin, bubbly, beige crown that quickly dropped to a lasting, foamy ring. Droplets of lacing trickled down the glass.

Tart and musty notes came through in the aroma. Some sour cherry as well. Balsamic vinegar was noticeable. Touch of caramel and brown sugar. As the beer warmed, the nose opened up. The cherry notes intensified, as did the sweetness. Slightly wine-like.

The flavor profile was a bit more intense than the aroma. Sour cherry notes came through strong on the front end. Some balsamic reduction as well. Bready with a pleasant brown sugar-like sweetness. Really nice balance of sweet and tart. Oaky and musty notes were detectible. The beer finished woody and slightly tannic with a touch of lemony tartness. Crisp and dry. Overall, this reminded me a lot of an oaky red wine.

The mouthfeel was lighter bodied. Frothy and somewhat fizzy. Rather nondescript.

Every year I look forward to trying Rodenbach's single barrel release, and the 2011 vintage definitely did not disappoint. With its dynamic and complex flavor profile, this beer really kept me on my toes.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is sour with malt, caramel, wood, funk, and fruit vinegar aromas. Taste is much the same with sour malt and vinegar flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with lots of interesting aromas and flavors.

2011 vintage opened January 2015. Cork difficult to remove. Poured at right angle into vertical Engelszell tulip/snifter. Produced a copious tan head that dissipated relatively slowly, leaving excellent lacing. Beer is a deep amber in color. Presentation is overall outstanding.

The nose is very similar to Rodenbach Grand Cru, with grassy sour notes over a solid malt foundation and Belgian yeast funk percolating throughout.

It took me a minute to appreciate the taste profile of this beer, as the oak aging made it a much drier beer than I was expecting. The sourness evident in Rodenbach's other beers is slightly overshadowed at first by the oaky dryness and a harsher acidity, closer to that of Geuze than what I normally associate with a Flemish red-brown. This alternative flavor profile won me over in the end, although I still prefer the Grand Cru.

4A: Nut brown, with good head.

4S: Lactic acid. Rich fruit. Acidic.

4T: Surprisingly sweet. Creamy-rich-sweet. Maraschino, wood, and a sharp, acidic finish.

3.5M: Smooth and pleasant. A bit flat.

4.25O: Really exceptional. A bit mellower than the Grand Cru. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. Recommended.

Poured from a Corked and Caged bottle into a Prairie Teku glass. How on earth am I the first person to ever review this?

Appearance: Dark brown crimson, with a small beige head that doesn't last too long but leaves a crown around the edge of the glass. No noticeable lacing. Very pretty sour beer though.

Smell: Strong fruity vinegar, perhaps a hint of balsamic. A light vinous character. This isn't my favorite style of sour smell, but definitely a strong example of the style.

Taste: Thats actually really good. Very dry and vinous, like a fine red wine. Definitely very tart, but not overwhelming or mouth puckering. While the smell suggested vinegar, the tart flavor is more of a fruit-forward style. I get notes of sour cherry. A faint bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel: On the moderate to light side of the carbonation spectrum. Not particularly thin, this one stick around a bit.

Overall: Honestly, better than I expected. I figured after smelling this that the beer would be overpoweringly sour in a "I'm drinking red-wine vinegar straight" kind of way. Not at all what I'm getting. Sour fans should seek this one out, although based on the number of reviews this one isn't easy to find.

Pours out of the bottle looking brown. Holding the glass up to the light it's a gorgeous deep ruby red. A small slightly tanned head develops and sticks around well for a sour.

Lots of those red fruit notes of cherry and cranberry.Sweet caramel and vanilla. Some leathery funk.

Sour cherry and vanilla upfront. Leather, wood, and tart caramel apple.

Bubbly and medium bodied. So smooth with perfect tartness and ends dry.

An imminently drinkable sour.

Brief write-up. The nose is very good, though a bit vinegary. The flavor, though, is stunning. I still get some acetic tartness, but I also get cherry, oak, vanilla, and raspberry - the way it all ties together is jaw-dropping. Screw the review, I just want to drink this all day.

Huge expectations. Popped the cork, fog comes out, smelling of vinegar and dirty old barrel.
Pours dark ruby dirty with some brown nuances, small beige head. Goes away in about two minutes, leaving a tiny film on top and quite some traces on the side of the glass.
Smells great! There's the obvious tartness, with sour cherries, forest berries and vinegar, but it doesn't dominate, sharing the front with some sweet malts, hinting caramel and some sweet cookie dough. Leather, sure, with the expected funkiness, vanilla and oak, earthy barrel, dry red wine. This should be nice, very fruity smell without any actual fruit added in the brew.
Taste: Very very sour cherry in the front, i cringed a bit during the first seconds, it was like biting a lemon. Vinegar tartness gets felt, faint green apple, tannins, red wine, and then gets sweeter bit by bit, even tiping the scales. So the sweet malts follow, pretty simple, just enough to act as a canvas for the barnyard funk, but especially for the great clear barrel notes. Rich vanilla coming off from the oak, wet wood, and then the fruitiness mixes in, getting a strong countryside-homemade red wine, that "tastes like stave" and has an extra warm alcohol kick. Balance is restored in the end, with a new zingy flash of sourness, leaving green hay, cherry peels, wood and berry sweetness in the aftertaste.
Smooth body, medium carbonation that prickles the palate, perfect for this one. Leaves the mouth dry, but packed with flavor.
Incredible how cheap the Rodenbach beers are, even this one. It's gonna be a long time until i find a sour ale better than this, if ever.
