Poured from a 750mL bottle into a brandy snifter.

A: Darkest brown that shines clear red in the light. One finger of off-white, creamy head.

S: Interesting and hard to describe. Tart and strong. Sour yeast is fruity and not unpleasant. Some oak.

T/M: A damn sight better than Duchesse De Bourgogne. This tastes like fruit and not like balsamic vinegar. The more I drink, the more I love it. This is really something special. A touch of vinegar, but lots more red fruit and mellow wood. A superlative aftertaste is lightly dry and lingers heavy on the tongue. A full, chewy, but delicate sort of beer. Light carbonation is key to my enjoyment. Tangy and sweet.

O: Contemplative and excellent. I will definitely be looking for more of this. My highest recommendation and my favourite Flemish Red. I am predisposed against this style, so that's really saying something.

Poured from a bomber in small tasting glasses so everyone could get a taste.

A - Light burgandy in color, slight off white head that recedes quickly leaving a thin layer on top, no real lacing slides quickly down the glass.

S - Getting a slight chemical varnish like smell, weird.

T - Nice tight tartness, feel like I'm getting a Granny apple taste, maybe some grapes also some wood chips, nice long finish.

M - Medium bodied, mild carbonation, slight mouth puckering.

O - I like this beer, only my second Flemish ale, very nice.

Served on tap into a snifter at 101 Bottles

A- Poured a beautiful burgundy/ruby red color, depending on how the light shines reddish/brown color. Nice frothy head that left no lace

S- Big astringent notes reminiscent of nail polish, some brett funk, sweet rapsberry, dark cherry, and raisin aromas

T- This beer has a huge astringent nail polish taste but not in a bad way, it is also the most oak forward tasting beer I have had, some sweet raspberry, dark cherry, and raisin flavors. Vinegar like notes are present as well. That brett funk is definitely there and it is quite sour.

M- Very dry, highly acidic, effervescent, big tingly carbonation

O- A truly unique beer, I really have not had anything like it. The astringent nail polish is a very unique taste, probably not everyone's cup of tea but I liked it. It is a sour and funky beer, I have had beers that are more sour, but this is definitely a sour beer.

Aroma: Lots of fruity esters, cherry, raspberry. A bold yeast aroma, mild pepper. No hops. No diacetyl. Some brett contributing to the bitterness. Bold sweet and sour fruit pretty much sums this one up.

Appearance: Dark brown, opaque. Some red can be seen when held up to a bright light. The head is brown and red, and fizzles loudly as it dissipates quickly, leaving no head or lacing.

Taste: Sour fruit and spicy phenols. Fruit is black cherries. Mild vanilla. Mild acidity and sourness. Tannic bitterness. Finishes dry like a red wine, but much sweeter.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Milidly astringent and acidic. What carbonation is there is stinging. Light and crisp. Similar to a dry red wine.

Overall: A classic example. Interesting how they call it a Flanders "Red Brown" Ale. I'm not seeing any of the dark malts, this is more of a pure Flanders Red, which as far as I know is how this one is officially categorized. Easy to drink, crisp and refreshing.

Note: 2/1/2012 date on bottle. Consumed on 2/15/2012.

Pours a murky dark brown with a 1 inch fizzy tan head that fades to nothing. No lacing on this one. Smell is of balsalmic and red wine vinegar, funk, and some woody aromas. Taste is of sweet and sour cherries, vinegar, funk, and a dry woody flavor on the finish. This beer has a higher level of carbonation with a very crisp and bubbly mouthfeel but with a drying quality in the mouth with each sip. Overall, this is a very good beer that is better than the classic Rodenbach but not as good as the 2008 Vintage I have tried.

A- Tart cherry and red grape notes.

A- Nice creamy biege head. Deep reddish brown. Clear on the initial pour.

F- There's a strong tartness present, but its not unidimensional at all. The malt is still present and there's a subtleness to the sourness that surprises. I would guess the long aging time and the multiplicity of bugs make this happen.

M- Silky with a strong dry finish. The body is still there, but overall it's rather low. Nicely drinkable.

O- Wow. A tart beautiful beer that drinks so easily and reminds me of red wine, but still retains the underlying beer qualities. I'm glad I finally got my hands on this one.

The beer is a murky, reddish brown. Not more than a circle around the glass as far as a head goes but it leaves some nice lacing.
The smell is all tartness and fruit, sour grapes and cherry with some lemon in there. It smells close to red wine at times.
There's more complexity in the taste although the sour still dominates the beer and completely overpowered it for me the first time I had this, it's an aquired taste alright.
Once aquired however, the beer is crisp and light with cherries, oak and just enough fruity sweetness to balance out the sour.

Not a very good looking beer but a really tasty one and a must try if you like sours.

Poured from a large corked bottle into a Unibroue La Fin Du Monde tall snifter. The appearance is dark, murky reddish-brown (like raspberry iced tea) with a nice off-white fluffy head. The nose is decidedly fruity and acidic, with notes of tart cherries and a slight touch of wet hay.

The beer is medium-bodied with a firm mouthfeel and a very refreshing tart flavor with a balancing, underlying sweetness. The predominant flavors I get are cherries, sour candy, a nice wine-like acidity, and a pleasantly drying finish. There's an elusive herbal quality to the finish that I can't quite place. The balance of sweet and sour seems to improve a bit as the beer warms.

This is a world classic and I'm glad I finally took the time to sit and review it. Fans of sour beers, Lambics, and American Wild Ales should seek this one out if they haven't already. What a perfect way to welcome the coming Spring!
