A pretty decent Barleywine. Poured into a tasting glass. Clear rusty copper. Small beige head.
Nose is hops and some Belgian yeasts. Slightly sweet.
Taste is sweet malts, sugary, and a slight sour citrus. Hops are lingering and piney.
Good mouthfeel. I'd buy this one again.

Thanks to cpinto6 for another beer to try from Jailhouse.

Pours a small fizzy but a bit fluffy 1/2 finger head that fades fairly slowly with decent lacing, not bad for a 10.5% beer, fairly hazy ruby maroon reddish beer with some light coming through.

Nose is a decent barleywine like nose, plenty of malts mostly reddish and sweet, but a bit toasty and some caramel, which leads to the molasses, candy syrup, toffee and nutty, fairly nutty actually and a strong toffee presence. Hops are light but there, some earthy slightly spicy like, but not a lot on the nose. Very candy barleywine like overall.

Taste continues, starting with plenty of sweet malts, candy like, reddish toasty malts and a bit of a biscuit. Sweet flavors include the caramel again, candy syrup, a bit of molasses, and tons of toffee again, a little nutty still, and a bit of a red candy apple syrup flavor. there are light fruits in there, hint of an apple pear like fruit, and faint fig like too. Hops bring the light earthy flavor, with some mild bitterness, but not a lot, just enough to give a nice balance to the beer. Booze is there but mild, drinks like an 8% beer so not bad for a 10.5% as it has a light warming feel, balanced by the fair sweetness. Finish is drier but still sweet like, a little syrupy, plenty more candy and toffee, nutty too, as well as the light earthy hops coming through a little more than previously, and a little booze tingle on the back end. The nutty flavors strike again quite late on the finish well after I've swallowed it.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, little syrupy, lighter but decent carb, light warming booze.

Overall not bad, nothing wrong at all and fairly typical barleywine. Hops are on the lighter side for an American barleywine but just enough to balance the malts nicely. Booze is hidden fairly well, and great sweet malt flavors, and balanced decently. Another impressive beer from them. The first beer I had from them was the wheat and I was quite unimpressed. Since then the beers got better and better, and the stout and barleywine were very well done.

An okay barley wine. I like the flavors fairly well, but it is simply a bit too sweet and unbalanced. Pours nicely enough, with a dark amber color and good clarity, as well as an okay head. The aroma is also decent, with some earthy notes and a touch of sherry along with the sweetness, but unfortunately you don't get that in the taste. Some depth and balance are needed here.

22oz bottle.

A - Pours a dark amber with a one finger khaki head. Head retention is excellent, and there is plenty of lacing to be had...

S - Caramel, toffee, figs, plums, and a hint of alcohol. Smells more like an english barleywine as a hop presence is all but nonexistent on the nose...

T - Caramel, and toasted malt up front with a good dose of figs, and some lingering malt on the finish. Alcohol is present, but comes across very smooth...

M - Nice syrupy feel with a moderate amount of carbonation. Sits somewhere on the higher end of the medium bodied spectrum...

O - Would have liked to try this a little fresher to see if there was more of a hop presence, but still a very solid barleywine. Throw this one in a barrel for a half year, and this could become an exceptional brew. Definitely looking to try other offerings from Jailhouse...

Cheers...

A - Pours with one finger of off white foam on top of a slightly hazy, amber brown body. The foam settles fairly quickly and leaves light lace on the walls of the glass.

S - Brown sugar and some dry toffee with red apple yeast character in the background.

T - Sweet, thick malt up front with notes of toffee and heavy caramel. Some red apple and a hint of licorice in the middle and a finish of spicy plum and apple with moderate bitterness.

M - Medium body, moderately low carbonation, and a sweet finish.

D - Not bad, but it seems like it has a lot of room to improve with extended aging. The malty, sweet body reminds me of a good quality English barleywine that won't reach it's peak for several years. It is ok now, but it might get a lot better.p

Served on tap at Taco Mac Metropolis. Reviewed from notes.

(Appearance) Pours a nice deep orange/brown caramel tone with a moderate amount of haziness. Head is a tan cream thin foam that recedes moderately. Carbonation is relaxed. Overall a good appearance. 4

(Smell) Aroma is very light with a little bitterness over a mild caramel and earthy malt base. Lack of significant potency makes this part largely uninteresting. 2.5

(Taste) Very sweet syrupy caramel and toffee malt flavor and a touch of booze. At times a bit overdone on the sweetness and a little boozy. A small spicy hop bitterness helps to round out the flavors a notch but overall it's an average flavor, a bit too hot at the moment. Many people are sure to think that its a bit too sweet and syrupy, but  3.5

(Mouthfeel) Slick, syrupy texture really contributes positively to the sweet flavors of the mouth. Alcohol presence is medium, body is medium/heavy. 4

(Overall). A very sweet and slick syrupy barleywine with a little heat. It may be a bit much for some but for me it was a enjoyable, although I cannot help but think that some age may do this drink some serious good in the long run. 3.5

11oz pour. On tap at Taco Mac (Alpharetta, GA). Served in a goblet.

Came to the table hazy deep chestnut red with a tiny cap of cream colored head, leaving a good bit of lacing.

Faint nose. A little sugar/carmel, dates/plums and a musty or almost yeasty smell. Dark fruits start to dominate as it warms.

Nice blend of plum, carmel, brown sugar and that yeasty thing I smelled. Satisfyingly sweet with a pronounced booze bite.

Medium to full syrupy feel with faily low carbonation. A long sweet boozy aftertaste.

Further proof that Glenn at Jailhouse knows what he's doing. It's a bit sweeter than many barleywines I've tried but it sure is tasty. I think the couple bottles I have at home will age nicely.

A: Poured into a tulip glass. A hazy dark copper color with a thick tan colored head that dies down rather quickly and laces the glass.

S: A nice earthy toasted malt, caramel, and brown sugar aroma.

T: Very nice caramel and toasted malt flavor up front. The peat and earthy flavor are there throughout and the finish is has a touch of fig and alcohol along with the burnt sugar flavors.

M: Medium body with a nice smoothness to it.

O: I'm surprised by this beer. They did a great job on this beer. The flavors are all spot on. I would recommend.

Pours a clear, dark cola brown with a very thick pale tan head that hangs around for a while. Yeasty aroma has notes of malt and fruit plus just a hint of caramel. Rich flavor has malty, caramel and fruity notes plus a hint of yeast and - wow, quite an alcohol bite! Just what one expects from a barleywine. Smooth, firm-bodied texture has plenty of fizz, and gets in a nice Parthian shot of alcohol bite just before heading downstairs.

22 ounce bottle - $8.49 at Olde Crabapple Bottle Shoppe in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a very dark amber-hued body, reasonable clarity, and topped with a couple inches of lightly beige foam. Only a few, small flecks of lace as we proceed.

Smell: Foremost a scent of lightly toasted biscuit tops with only a hint of toffee candy rounded out by notes of varying fruits, dried porcini mushrooms, and Aunt Mertel's homemade date wine.

Taste: Sweet, sugary toffee taste over the toasted biscuits from the nose. Slight date sugar, a little apricot (though, as times substituted with sweet cherry puree), but also some pithy-accented citrus. Lightly earthy, with more than a hint of mushrooms. Drying, though still quite sweet, with touches of light underlying resins, peppery alcohol (really starts to heat up the ole belly later on) on the full finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: There's a fair amount of sweetness (but, hey, it's a barleywine) and it's definitely warming, you can tell you're ingesting plenty of booze, but it's never glaring.

The burgundy colored body was topped with beige colored head, which at three fingers thick, was quite generous for the style. The smell was quite mild for me. I could detect toffee, cherry, and earthy hops via the nose. The taste was much more complex than the aroma hinted at. I was struck by the spicy sour tone at the beginning of each sip, which was shortly followed by a load of herbal bitterness. The aftertaste was spicy and extended. This is one of the least sweet Barleywines I can remember tasting, as the hops appeared to dry everything up. Mouthfeel was thick and chewy at first, and the finish was very drying. A different take on the style compared to the others.
