Prison Camp Pils is brewed in the style of a Czech Pilsener. The first entry in Jailhouse's "Inmate Hooch" series, it was brewed and released in June 2012 and moved quickly from shelves. As with all of Jailhouse's releases, it is only available in 22 oz. bombers. No freshness date, no label information. Very cool label. I'll try to upload it to BA.com soon.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber to a pilsner glass. Served north of 44º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours an agitated towering dish-sudsy consistency crisp white head over a golden straw yellow body with average relaxed carbonation for the style. Retention is above average and lacing is thin and spotty, head could have hung around a little while longer but I've seen much worse. It has the expected appearance of a Czech Pilsener without any major flaws in appearance. 3.75

(Smell) Wheat malts, grassy, floral and herbal hop blend and some citrusy fruit notes give this beer an interesting variety of flavors. A few notes of tart apple here and there and some mild acidity. It's closely balanced yet a bit fuller on the aroma than most Czech Pilsener beers, perhaps a bit heavier on the body. The hop presence is especially inviting and diverse. Potency is high. 4.25

(Taste) Up front crisp pilsner malts and faint grassy hops followed through with a sweet mildly toasted caramel and faint citrus note with a musty wheat and herbal hop finish. Not as much emphasis on the hop character as there was in the aroma. Some mild sharpness on the finish from acidity and alcohol. Bitterness is medium but hop flavor is mild. The finish has a unique toasted malt bite to it in the trailing finish. The flavors weren't as well preserved as they were anticipated to be by the aroma, but there were a few unique qualities in this beer that did a decent job of making the flavor very unusual (in a good way). Tartness is a little lower than in the aroma and the drinkability is near high. I don't find myself guzzling this down like I would in most Czech Pilseners on an account of a slightly heavier body but there isn't anything keeping me from enjoying it fully. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Quite bubbly and busy with a slight chewiness. Near clean, crisp finish aside from some mild toasted character. Body is medium/heavy amongst Czech Pilseners and light+ amongst all beers. Alcohol presence is medium, a little sharper in this beer than I'm used to. Carbonation is nearly ideal for the style. I find this a little less of a Czech Pilsener and closer to a German one than it is advertised at. The texture and carbonation is spot on but the body is a little heavier than I'm used to. 4

(Overall) This beer was nearly ready to escape when I cracked the bottle open and was a flavorful Pilsner, likely trapped between a German and Czech pilsner in style, a bit heavier in body and with some more unique, yet not all well implemented flavors. Bitterness was good but hop presence paled in comparison to the malt presence. Some acidity was to be expected for the style and beer. Despite some mild quips, I actually enjoyed this Pilsener a lot and am looking forward to it coming around again, perhaps with a touch more hop flavor and a notch less wheat must in the flavor. I'll do my part in drinking it a little closer to the release date. 3.75

A 22oz bottle picked up at Greens on Buford Hwy in late June, 2012

A - Light straw, full clarity, a bit of head and some sticky lace left on the slide of the glass. Exactly what a Pilsner should look like

S - Malty grain and minor floral hops.

T - Light and malty. A nice bitter hop bite at the end. Very good!

M - Light bodied, smooth. Very light tasting for even a 5.5%.

O - An excellent take on the Pilsner. Very tasty. Jailhouse auto to sell these in 6 packs in the future. I would be a repeat buyer at a decent 6 pack price.
