22oz bottle from Hop City (Atlanta, GA). 7.99. No bottle date but this was just released about 2 weeks ago. Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Pours a deep dark crimson with a half finger pale tan head. No lacing.

Smells of smoked malts, raisin bread and caramel.

The smokey malts lead off with burnt sugar, bitter cocoa, caramel, nuts and sweet bread. More smokey/ roasty and less sweet than I was expecting. The alcohol stays hidden.

Creamy medium body with a good bit of mildly fizzy carbonation.

Neither my favorite doppelbock nor my favorite from Jailhouse but this is pretty tasty stuff. It's good to see Jailhouse continuing to branch into new styles. I'll most likely have this again.

Bomber poured into my Tucher Original Hell glass

A: Great, classic doppelbock appearance; 1 finger head that dissipated quickly.

S: Dark fruit, bread, true to style.

T: Nice bready taste with the expected sweetness, but not too sweet. A bit thinner than I'm used to in a doppelbock but not bad at all. The finish is smooth with alcohol flavor very understated.

M: Smooth and goes down easy.

O: I'm a sucker for a doppelbock and have had many. Bought this one on a whim and it did not disappoint me, but it was a bit light in the flavor department compared to some others I've had. That said, it's great for a doppelbock-head like me to see there are more breweries putting these out there.

No label information. Dead Man Walking is brewed in the style of a German Doppelbock beer. Brewed in the fall of 2012 as a fall one-off release, available in limited run 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a Jailhouse pint glass. Served above 46 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy fizzed head of a caramel cream color over a hazy maple brown body. Carbonation is light and spritely. Retention is average at best, there is no lacing. 3.25

(Smell) Bready, biscuity malts, raisins and dates for a light syrupy fruit sweetness. Potency is medium. 3.5

(Taste) Bready, soft malt with a mellow sweetness, mild on the flavor. Specialty characters include a touch of caramel, chocolate malt and a dash of spiced bread. Altogether its a mildly flavored and highly drinkable doppelbock. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) The texture is slick, mildly chewy and faintly dry. Carbonation generates a subtle carbonation for a silky, mildly fizzy mouthfeel. Body is shy of medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is evenly sweet to earthy bitter, collectively mild. Alcohol presence is mild, there are no notable off characters. 3.75

(Overall) A well-mannered Doppelbock that has much of the flavor charactertistics of the style but doesn't quite generate the "imperial" feel of the style due to its mild malt profile and nearly even balance. This is a decent beer from the brewery but is certainly capable of going the extra mile. 3.5

Had in October of 2012. Strong, malty aroma has an earthy overtone and firm hints of cloves and caramel. Pours a clear warm sepia with a fizzy and none too persistent tan head. Rich flavor fills the mouth with malty, earthy and nutty notes plus hints of chocolate, caramel and cloves. Texture has good body, but fizz leaves something to be desired. This, however, is the beer’s only weak spot. Overall, an arresting doppelbock.
