750ml bottle served in a snifter glass.

Bottled in January 2009.

A: Nice pop when opened. Pours a beautiful reddish cloudy colour forming a small pinkish creamy and bit molasses head. Medium retention and many lingering glasses formed and left in the glass

S: Classic fruity Lambic. Great perfume of cherries. A delicious juice of cherries with also delicious notes of oak. A bit metallic. Belgian Lambic yeasts

T: Perfect taste. Slightly sweet upfront. Cherry bomb. Excellent notes of cherries. Absolutely delicate taste. Not too sour and not too sweet as well. Cherry vinegar. Very balanced. Oak. Earthy Belgian Lambic yeasts

M: Medium body and carbonation. Cherry juice aftertaste

O: Excellent drinkability. If you are looking for a perfect Kriek, you've just found one...

Thanks to mrbubbler for sharing this one at Retsinis' tasting.

Bottled 1/2009.

Pours a hazy dark red with a foamy reddish-white head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Small chunks of sediment are seen floating around in the beer after the pour. Smell is sour with malt, cherry, earth, and funk aromas. Taste is much the same with sour cherry and funk flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a fantastic sour and funky cherry flavor that makes this one very easy to drink.

vintage - 2009 750ml served in Cantillon flute

served at 55 degrees, gushed about a 1/8 of the bottle out *sad face*

pours a dirty ruby red, chunks of yeast floating (because of bottle gush). little to no head ironically.

tart cherry pie on the nose. cherries are bright but funky and old.

very similar flavor to the smell. cherry flavor is bright but old and oaky. has some old musty funk. a bit of sourness in the finish. mostly cherry up front.

light to moderate carbonation, dry cherry finish

never seen de cam with so much liveliness! taste is very unique for an oude kriek. tastes about 6 years older than it is. nice stuff.

Oude Kriek De Cam is clear but has a ruby tone as rich and vivid as a double coating of nail-polish. You could make an evening gown out with this colour and be the belle of the ball. Even the head - normally a soft pink - is a darker shade of red than some commercial Krieks' body!

The aroma exudes sour cherry and almonds notes. It is tart, if not outright sour despite the abundance of cherry flavour. The fruit pits are what account for the almond character (which is highly appreciable in this example). The bouquet is enticing and enchanting.

The tastes of almonds and cherries are conspicuous - check your tongue for a cherry tattoo after the fact - but the flavour can almost more resemble cranberry because of its sourness. Purists don't like too much fruit flavour, but this manages to deliver delicious cherry notes without encumbering the lambic or the barrels in which its been aged.

Indeed, Oude Kriek De Cam has a fuller taste than most Krieks and it manages this without either the artificial sweetness of commercial brands or the extreme acidity and barnyard characteristics of other traditional examples. Still, it has plenty of the style's trademark 'funk'; considering how closely this resembles vinegar, it's strangely agreeable and refreshing.

Oude Kriek De Cam has all the complexity and character of, say, Cantillon Kriek, but is a bit more approachable for the uninitiated. I bet it'd be just as popular were it easier to find outside of Belgium. One of the best, most authentic examples of this unique, superb style, it's definitely something you'll want to savor with your feet up (even if you’re at the bar, so what?!).
