A very dry, sharp tasting, sour Gueuze. Oak is detectable in the aftertaste. The newest of the Gueuze blenders, the Bottle was dated 1998 and sampled in the De Cam Stekerij at Easter 2002. The Gueuze was extremely effervescent when de-corked. Excellent example of the style, a truly traditional Gueuze, will definitely become a favourite amongst Gueuze Monsters in years to come as the Vintages develop character, and may well mount a challenge for King Cantillons crown. The 1998 Vintage is one of the first batches to leave the Stekerij and hence the oldest. Review is for the 1998 Bottle. Note: Newer examples that I have tried (2000) lack the dryness and can be somewhat 'flat' when served. I believe that time will better this Gueuze in the years to come. Superb!!

Ultra Dry, Petroly tasting Geuze sampled at the Delerium Café on 8-18-08. 375 ml bottle dated Jan 2006. Plenty of funky horse hair aromas, gasoline, grapefruit, dust, etc... Flatish body is forgiven as the wildness of it all more than makes up for it. Citric flavor with touches of barnyard piss and soap. Mmmmm.... A treat. One of the best beers and biggest surprises of my stay in Belgium. Drinkable by the liter.

Bottle says "Exclusief Oude Geuze" and lists the abv at 6%, but I don't see a separate listing; bottled Jan 2009.

After reading a few other reviews that mentioned corks flying across the room from this batch, I hold onto the cork while untwisting the cage. And a good thing too, as the cork comes shooting out as soon as the cage is loosened. No liquid or foam comes out.

A - An initial attempt at a pour into a wine glass yields three fingers of foam and a thin pool of liquid. Yep, it's carbonated. Eventually, a hazy golden brown liquid emerges beneath one finger of dense white foam. Great retention.

S - Huge funky aroma, more earthy than musty, though some must is present as well. Faint notes of lemon.

T - Bracingly tart, which I did not expect based on the aroma. Quite acetic and citric. Earthy funk elements are definitely there, but they take awhile emerge from the wall of sour. A bit grassy as well, with some lemon and green apple. Very tasty.

M - Prickly carbonation, maybe a bit too much, but still crisp with an earthy dry bitterness that yields a medium mouthfeel.

O - Very tasty geuze. After the initial sour burst, a nice balance of sour and funky.

Thanks to ShadesofGray for sharing this 2003 dated bottle.

This beer is FANTASTIC! It is very crisp and dry with lively carbonation. The beer is a little sweet at first, but the funky develops to give off lots and lots of bretty barnyard (combo of musty straw and horse pee). There is a lot of puckering lemon and bright orange zest. I immensely enjoyed this beer and would say this is one of the best examples of Gueuze I've ever had.

Stinky, sour and dry, dirty nappies and cheese, puckery, lemony. Hardcore lambic pretty much at its best, the palate however, was a lot softer and less harshly acidic than something like Cantillon, or even Beersel, which i actually welcomed. i don't what i can really say other than there is simply nothing wrong with this gueze, all i wanted to do when i finished it, was have another one(Bottle- GBBF 03')

2009 Vintage.

A: Pours with a massive white, fizzy head that dissipated slowly leaving a nice white cap on top. Random bits of lacing form on the sides. Color is a hazy golden/orange.

S: Nice musty/barn/hay aroma upfront mixed with some lemony citrus. A little bit of oak and faint green apple.

T: Great level of sour/tartness, very balanced. Less musty than the aroma with more of a citrus presence. Some lemon and more green apple. Some oak hits in the middle. Slight sweetness on the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, slightly fizzy with a dry finish.

O: Really nice gueuze, had no problem downing this bottle. Great level of tartness, not overly sour (even though I love them sour), but very balanced.

750ml bottle, akkurat -stockholm.

maybe the only bargain beer to be had in the whole country - very fair price on a beer i could never find otherwise.

paired with some mussels - whisky, bacon, cream

appearance: served in de cam glasswear - active carbonation, straw golden body, agressive white foam

smell: when handed to me, the beer guru announced that this "smelled f*cking wonderful" - this was pretty accurate. funky grass, sour grape, lemon zest, earthy

taste: greate gueuze - funky straw/grass, sour white grap, hay, wet earth, lemon zest, tart white wine, all the characteristics you could hope for

mouthfeel: tart, dry, aggressive

overall: great

Finally cracked open a bottle I bought last year in Ghent. I also finally noticed the bottle date was from 2000, so I wasn't sure what to expect here. I think the beer was a little past it's prime, as it wasn't bursting with complexity. Instead, it had smoothed out a bit. Frankly, this just helped me drink more of it, so I'm not complaining. A lot of great gueuze will be bursting with flavor, but the sourness really hurts drinkability. So with this more subtle (for the style) tartness, the beer is still full of the trademark tangy lemon, citrus rind, and farmhouse character - it just doesn't beat you over the head with any of them. I certainly wouldn't mind drinking this beer again.

pours a golden yellow with an ever so fizzy head. amazing retention.

tons of sour lemon, light vinegar, and dry oak. a bit grassy and earthy.

very sour through out. lots of vinegar with a strong bitter lemon and tart apple flavor. oak is not as apparent as in the smell. a bit in the finish.

moderare carbonation mainly through out the middle with a lightly dry finish.

overall, this is one excellent gueuze, wish i had more.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled January 2009.

Appearance - The cage came off without event, but the slightest pressure on the cork causes it to fly off and the beer begins to gush. Fills the glass with white foam. It settles quickly and leaves very little on the surface. The body is clear deep golden.

Smell - Lots of white pepper. Bright orange citrus. Hefty oak. A little bit of pale malt. Light acidity.

Taste - Sour up front, but drops off quickly. Drops off to oak and pepper. The malt lends a hint of sweetness and then becomes orangey. Strong oak lingers in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Very dry. The body drops off quickly. High carbonation.

Overall - Excellent without being all that dynamic. Missing some of the sour and malt characteristics that would allow this to transcend other gueuzes.

I was glad I found this brand, because it isn’t easy to come by. “De Cam” is one of the last of three to brew Lambic. And they do there own blending.

Because the label is only in Dutch, it has given some translation problems it seems. This is what it says:
“In large one hundred year old oak barrels, the Lamiek ripens for years. Specially for you, 1, 2 and 3 year old Lambiek has been carefully tasted, blended and bottled.
(Address of the brewery)
This Geuze only contains wheat, malt and hop.”

Bottling date 15-03-2003 (EU system). I served this at room temperature in a Geuze glass, a “Boerke” (looks like a 1/2 pint glass).
Very strong head development at first, but it settled eventually. A nice thin creamy head remained.
When I opened the bottle a strong Geuze sent overwhelmed my nostrils. Everything rural and old romantic came to my mind as I enjoyed the odour. More specific it reminds me of a farm / stable. Moisture, wild spices, unions, salted and dried meat. Strong basic tones.
The colour is a light orange amber. Little bubbles running through.
Taste is overwhelmingly good. Some bitterness at first, sourness kicks in very quickly and becomes overpowering. Citric. Evolves in a more well balanced aroma. Dark bread and malt / moisture / old.
Malt and sour flavours linger on in the back of the mouth.

Best Geuze I have drunk so far. Congratulations for saving this unique beer.

Bottled Jan 2009 - 375 ml bottle.

A - Nice lacing with a hazy dark gold color. Think half way between an amber and a hefe.

S - It's a geuze. The most unique and amazing smell in the world to me. Musty citrus smell. A distinct sour in there as well.

T - Tartness and funkiness with apple finish. The finish last forever, in a very, very good way.

M - Tiny bubbles in the carbonation make for a light feel and really add to the taste.

D - I love geuze, but you can never have too many of them.

Maybe the best geuze I've ever had.

This one was shared by beeruser with funkydelic, StayWhatYouAre2, 67couple, others, and myself at a recent tasting graciously hosted by beeruser! 2009 Vintage! Served from bottle into a Duvel Parra tulip. Poured a hazy golden yellow with a minimal white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, subtle sour, funk, and bell pepper. The flavor was of sweet malt, bell pepper, funk, and slight sour. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. Bell pepper, eh!? That is a new one for me in a beer... However, it really wasn't that bad in this one and actually helped bring out the subtle sourness I picked up on. This brew was very easy drinking and enjoyable. I would love to try one of these with a good bit of age on it to see how it develops over time. A definite must try, even if it is just to try and taste the bell pepper notes I got on it.

Appearance: Apple cider colored peachy yellow brew, the head and lacing lasted a whole 3 seconds.

Smell: Definately a woody, old cask aroma. The funkyness is there, but more subdued than say 3F or Cantillon. In fact, it had a surprising freshness, almost minty herbal aroma that went leathery further on.

Taste: Low end carbonation pushes the acidity to good levels but without getting too astringent or "burning", the funky flavor tastes a bit more corky than woody, it again reminded me of a dry cider, especially in the finish, it's drying and tart but oh-so easy to drink and makes you drink more and more! I'm glad I finally got to find one of these rare beauties!

Thanks Brad for this one, jan. 2006 bottle.

High clarity orange, bright jewel tone with soft carbonation. Light wispy cobwebs of skim across the still surface. Starkly elegant thin ring of white foam.

Oak, toasted sesame seed, lemon, wet hay aroma.

Fruit leans toward citrus with lemon peel, puckering citric acid. Starfruit, semi-tropical fruit element that seeps in around the lemony sourness. Finishes bone dry, lingering woody aftertaste. Pulls the cheeks inward, tart like fresh grapefruit. Perfect level of carbonation, soft enough to give it a truly mellow feel that's a joy to savor.

Right up there with Cantillon as a classic example of traditional Lambic/Gueuze. Unique in it's own right, with pronounced dry oak and citrusy fruit notes.
