Herr Brauer (Mr. Brewer in German) is one of the coziest beer places I've steped into, or maybe the hot and rainy weather in Rio had something to do with it. It's small on the inside, with a "short second floor". Underneath that second floor where I sat, I felt extremly comfortable. A little dark, dry, and a few beer glasses, bottles, and posters helped enchance the surroundings.
There are about 60 beers available, and by Rio standards, that qualifies as good. They use the correct glassware, serve at the right temperature, and my server poured my Eisenbahn Weizenbock perfecty; she turned the bottle and glass several times to fill the glass with the combination of head and beer that made it look like real eye candy! She tried to help recommend a beer for me, and because I only know a little Portuguese, I asked her to find me a Brazilian beer. Well, there isn't as much Brazilian beer available as I expected, so I settled on a beer I already experimented with.
Some of the beers available: Paulaner, DeuS, Erdinger, Duvel, Eisenbahn, Baden Baden, Colorado, Schmitt, Hofbrau, Strong Suffolk, Old Speckled Hen in bottles, plus Brahma Chopp on-tap. Prices are a little higher than at other places I visited, and in one case, highway robbery - Strong Suffolk; R$35! (compared at R$23-26 to other bars.)
Herr Brauer is worth a stop in the marvelous city. Cozy interior, great presentation of beers, and a good staff. I'll keep this in mind when I return to Rio, and you should too.
