been waiting awhile to try this, maybe the price tag has kept me from it. also not sure what to expect from the style, an uncommon blend to say the least. pale blonde beer, honey hued, heady ad clean, white dressed lace, looking real good. the nose on it is more tripel than lambic, with a rounder body for its looks, a vein of sweetness running through it, and the classic belgian fruity ester aroma, albeit rather soft and delicate. the lambic part is real subtle, just a hint of that oaky lactic funk, less sourness or real old world wheat malt base, elegant. the flavor is as danced as the nose, with much more of the lambic in the finish, the acidity cuts the sweetness of the tripel perfectly, and a harmonious balance is found about mid palate. carbonation is awesomely bright, refreshing as they come, and the lack of super heavy belgian yeast in here makes it a little more tidy to drink. also, the lack of real strong tripel norm alcohol content makes this a bit more drinkable too, too easy in fact. as a sour or wild ale, this leave a little to be desired on a bacterial level, but as a beer, especially as a unique one, its wholly satisfying. i wish it cost about 5 bucks less a bottle, but i certainly appreciate the process and the blending here. expertly done.

330ml stubby bottle, my first (I think) blend of these two particular styles.

This beer pours a hazy medium golden straw colour, with three fingers of puffy, thinly foamy off-white head, which leaves some impressively original basalt column lace around the glass as it duly recedes.

It smells of sour, acidic apple and cherry must, grainy, semi-sweet pale malt, a bit of candy sugar, softly funky yeast, and some mild earthy hops. The taste is moderated, tart blended table fruit, more sweet grainy malt, a further weakened wild funkiness, a bit of astringent wood fibre, and some grassy, alfalfa-like notes.

The carbonation is a bit heavy on the frothy and prickly side, the body just on the low side of medium weight, and equitably smooth. It finishes seemingly on the sweet side, that tripel sugary character quickly tempered by some waning tart apple and pear fruitiness, and attendant musty, funky yeast.

A clear mixing of the most obvious elements of these two styles. I believe that the whole is better than the sum of the parts here, as the tripel's sugary essence is softened by the tart funkiness of the gueuze. Good stuff.

Poured on tap into a snifter glass at Churchkey DC.

A minimal sized collar is presented but a generous fill. Collar is a bit soapy white, but sits on a pale orange to peach colored body. Almost orb glowing, and while drinking leaves a lot of speckled lacing.

Bouquet is interesting. Slightly floral, a bit of lemon and mild funk. Nothing real acidic, just a tou ch with some herbal green sensations. Nothing too sweet, and not to sour either.

First sip is real mellow and juicy. For a tripel there's not much dense malt here, but some lemon fruitness and some of the sucrose kicks in. It's wonderfully balanced and accented with some funky juicy qualities, that go into tropical mango and peach fruit flavors and aromas. There's some slight white pepper that matches the funk on the finish as well, and there's an almost light lambic drinking feel and champagne crisp dryness to this also.

Overall, a very unique creation even for the Belgian realm, real memorable too.

Vicaris Triple Gueuze

LOOK: Golden yellow, with a white head and spotty lacing. Perfect clarity, with many fine carbonated bubbles rising to the surface.

SMELL: Sour smelling beer with some grainy malt and candy sugar.

TASTE: Funky sour, fairly strong and farmhouse like. Notes of lemon rind, candi sugar hay and wheat. Some soft alcohol works well with a very dry oak. More like a Gueuze than a tripel; plenty sour,which is encouraged in anything donning that term.

FEEL: Medium bodied, crisp carbonation, bone dry finish full of oaky tannins.

OVERALL: This is a quality offering. The sour is good and the flavor is long lasting. A pretty good blend of a Gueuze and a triplel.

Tart over ripe fruit with a hint of pineapple and malt on the nose. Pours slightly hazed gold with a touch of copper. The beer enters very creamy, fruity citrusy lemony with a hint of bread, large pitted fruit, grape and something tropical. The rich malt and fruit flavors balance the tartness. the carbonation is very fine and above average while the body is light for as big the flavors are. Very refreshing and drinkable.

Poured a gorgeous cloudy golden body with an orange tint and a thin ring of bubbles with no real head. Overall impression of appearance is of a cross between a Geuze and a Tripel, foreshadowing the rest of the beer. Scents of orange and tangerine flesh, apricot juice, a hint of soft, sweet malt and light honey, medium fruity esters, medium-light Geuze funk, with notes of barnyard sourness, hay, lemon, light grapefruit, light spicy phenols in the background with notes of white pepper. Overall impression of aroma is of a tripel overall, but mingled very well with the fine aromas of a Geuze. A deep, complex, wild aroma that is amazingly enticing. Flavor begins moderately funky, but with a light sweetness also present, with flavors of lemon zest, earthy hay, grapefruit flesh, medium-light sourness, moderate spicy phenols with white pepper dominant but also some clove. Middle is lightly dry with notes of white pepper, light levels of spicy herbal/floral hop bitterness, lemon zest, medium-light grapefruit and some tangy wheat. Finish is dry and tangy with notes of tangy wheat, white pepper, medium-light levels of spicy hops, fruit reminiscent of citrus and lemon zest. Aftertaste is dry with notes of spicy hops, white pepper and phenols and light grainy malt. Overall impression of flavor is of a mingled Tripel and Geuze, though the Geuze overwhelms a bit. Very refreshing and complex, dry and sour, yet balanced. Quite nice. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied, with effervescent carbonation and a puckering, drying, refreshing feel. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a nice Geuze, not much of the Tripel on display. Overall this is a fantastic blend. An excellent combination of Geuze and Tripel that is complex and refreshing.

This blend could be either style by the look and the color. It's a well carbonated, bright, clear medium orange. On top rests a foamy, craggy but soft, sort of pillowy tan head that's just less than one finger tall. It shows good retention and leaves a mixture of both spotting and patching in pretty good quantity.
The nose is tart, fresh with a clean quality to it and just a little funk, not quite as much as in the taste. There's some zest and a gently peppery note. Also mingling is a soft, dusty earthiness and very, very light flowery hops bitterness.
The flavor really showcases the major elements of both tripel and gueze, well-meshed but no element really taking over. Belgian yeast is there but not very strongly, giving more earthy/dusty with a little candi sugar sweetness than anything. The gueze brings out just a little vinegar, must and tartness. It really blends well, not coming on too strong but not failing to give plenty of flavor.
The feel leans toward the gueze initially, a little on the dry side, before the malts and sugars bring out some sweetness on the palate. Crispness is steady and it's smooth all the way through in a medium body.

Cloudy, nearly opaque orange brew beneath a thin (1/2 finger) fizzy white head which quickly fades. Small lines of lacing.

Immediate tart notes in the nose, with a backing of Belgian yeast. There's a dry, champagne-like quality mixed with a light citrus smell that one expects of a Tripel. Definite Gueze-like funkiness, as well. Intriguing aroma, very complex.

Slightly sour and funky up front, while the Tripel brings up the rear with Belgian yeast and candi sugar. Soft fruit notes: pear, banana, lemon.

Pretty big sting to this beer, and a pretty full feel overall. Not too easy to savor this one in the mouth for long. Sticky resiliency.

This is an interesting blend of styles that seem fairly complementary. It doesn't make for the best of either world, though. It's worth a try, and it's certainly interesting, but if I'm in the mood for a Tripel, I'm going to grab a traditional Tripel.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy orange body. Small white head. Medium collar.

Smell - Smells like mostly tripel. Bready malts. Some orange and very light phenolic notes.

Taste - Starts off bready. Oak lends a damp and slight cardboard flavor. The blended lambic shows a little later with some lemon and tartness.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. High carbonation.

Overall - It's ok, but not anything I'd pick up again. In fact I might not even finish my small pour.

After trying Vicardin I was skeptical about a new "tripel gueuze" blend, but this one is a definite improvement.

Saturated golden orange pour, lacy collar of white foam in the glass, a sizable head of foam when poured or swirled.

A bit of dusty candy sweetness in the aroma, slight lambic funkiness, wet hay from Brett yeast.

Pleasantly tart upfront, lemon and vanilla descending into the clove and esters of the base tripel. Finishes dry and thankfully not sweet and boozy like many tripels. Somewhat creamy and zesty feel, moderate carbonation. Still the flavor leaves something to be desired, though the blend is a unique one. Worth trying if the idea appeals to you.

Poured from 750 mL corked & caged bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderate hand. No date on the label. Just started seeing this around...

A: Inviting, cloudy, golden honey-colored body with an orange tint. 1 finger clean white head. Ok retention. Light lacing.

S: Lemon, citric tartness with very little acetic. Belgian yeast. Light funk, barnyard. More fruit-forward than your typical gueuze. Tropical fruit, light peach, apple, white grape.

T: Solid, lemony tartness up front with a Belgian yeast spice. Some malt sweetness breaks through. The finish is semi-dry with the tripel-esque fruit notes making their appearance known. A little bit of alcohol. A hint of hop bitterness arises in the aftertaste.

M: Moderate carbonation with moderate to light body. Flavor is well distributed.

O: Well executed mashup of two of my favorite styles. Starts like a gueuze, finishes like a tripel and tastes like delicious. Nicely presents elements of both styles in a balanced way. Each is well represented, but neither dominates. Well integrated and complementary. Really cool brew.

Pretty interesting blend of Tripel and Geuze - I found the Tripel character to predominate, with a lot of the yeastiness I associate with a Tripel. I didn't find this beer tart; I'd say the Geuze showed up as a bit of funkiness, in a very nice way. Definitely worth a try if you see it.

On tap at Red Papaya, Seattle. Paired well with Vietnamese food.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into tulip. Lot 04042014 stamped on the cork.
A: Pours a hazy lemon yellow with high carbonation producing a 2 inch white frothy head with excellent retention. Nice lacing too. Admire this one. (4.5)
S: Soft (lemon) citrus, earthy mineral funk, melon, and white pepper. Give this a little time to open up (not even warm much) and notes of honey and a hint of vanilla emerge. (4.25)
T: Wow...love the blend. Orange and lemon citrus, white pepper, honey, hint of salt, and a note of dry minerals. (4.25)
M: Soft, sweet, and creamy up front (tripel)...turns toward more tart (gueuze) in the mid-palate and finish. Medium body. Dry finish with nice lingering on the palate. (4.25)
D: An interesting idea with excellent results. This one could have gone off the rails, but it ends up walking the tight-rope with success. Seek it out! (4.25)

Picked this up at a great little beer store in Arlon, Belgium, Miorge Mihoublon. Hazy yellow-orange pour with a one finger white head that fades quickly with nice lacing. The nose is complex and really nice. Hints of Belgian yeast and grass along with some subtle barnyard, pears, lemon, and white pepper. The taste follows suit with lots of citrus notes along with hints of yeast, lemon zest, subtle vinegar, barnyard, grass, and pear. The mouthfeel is tart, fizzy, and crisp with great balance and a refreshing champagne-like finish. Overall, this was a pleasant surprise. Reminded me of the 2013 Zwanze.

Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station. Poured into a flared Belgian tulip glass.

Appearance - Body pours a sunny golden orange with hints of amber and and straw. Atop the body sits a one-finger head of soapy white foam. The head dissipates after a minute or so, leaving a thin rim of foam around the edge of the glass and no lacing or film to speak of. Swirling coaxes out hints of a decent amount of carbonation, which also vanishes after a few moments.

Smell - Some faint tart funk along with a fruity phenolic spicy element from the Belgian yeast in the tripel. I honestly expected there to be more suggestion of sourness, given that this is half Boon lambic. There is also a bit of sweetness to the smell that defies the more acidic elements you might expect from the lambic. The fruit brings to mind notes of lemon zest and and pear.

Taste - An interesting blend of traditional tripel and lambic elements. Bright and just a hint of tart that provides an essence of ripe green apple and peach cobbler, along with a bready, sweet underlying element from the yeast and alcohol. No heat to speak of, but this is only a 7% beer, so that is to be expected. On the finish, there is just a hint of wet hay, but for the most part, this strikes me as a tripel with funky leanings. I can't help but wonder if the blend would benefit from a higher percentage of the lambic.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and low-moderate carbonation. Finish is slightly sweet with no bitter aftertaste. Very easy drinking with a slightly juicy element.

Overall, an interesting beer, and good, but probably one I'm more than satisfied having the one glass. Good thing too, as the keg was killed while I was here tonight. Not sure when I'll see it again, in bottle or on tap.

Review #2700. Finally getting around to trying this intriguing blend. It pours a hazy lemon-straw topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises tart lemon zest, light lemon rind, very light vinegar, coriander, and light cracked wheat. The taste brings in more of the same, with some light black pepper, light clove, and banana peel. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda dry finish. Overall, this is some solid stuff, but the characteristics that would normally define the two constituent parts get kind of swallowed up by each other. In other words, there's little in the way of tripel, there's little in the way of lambic, and the result, though enjoyable, seems to fall short of expectations for such a blend.

Again, looking for a wonderful Belgium tripel or quad experience and I was disappointed. The beertenders don't really post descriptions of the beers on their hi-tech display board--maybe everyone already knows the characteristics before they walk in. I wish I had researched it more before ordering.

The beer was cloudy and colored like a Hefeweizen, smooth but no body.
Very fruity and light tasting.
It was drinkable but not memorable.

I don't think I'll try this one again unless I want something very light in flavor.

A: very cloudy, honey-colored liquid.... no head, surface foam, or lace... about right for a gueuze, but not for a tripel... a little disappointing

S: smells pretty much like what it's a blend of: a tripel and a gueuze... fairly assertive malt, faint caramel, with the subtle floral alcohol of a tripel.... distant, fragrant, navel-orange citrus in the background - adds a touch of brightness to the aromas, but doesn't enhance the otherwise weak intensity of them

T: the funk comes through a good bit more in the taste, however, this is still, at the very least, dominated by the malt and floral notes from the tripel.... honey-ish, cereal flavors from the malt... tiny, vaguely 'yellow' grapefruit tart/tang in the aftertaste - not much gueuze coming through - whatever portion of it that is blended in merely serves to provide a subtle accent to the overall flavor... I'd stop short of saying it adds 'complexity' as the beer, in total, has a fairly messy, amateur composition (or perhaps has experienced degradation from poor handling?)

M: moderately soft and smooth up front... good bit of the roundish, delicate viscosity retained from the tripel... long finish, ultimately ending dry.... mild, citrus-juicy, acidic film left over on the palate... perhaps this is how it's supposed to be - kinda flat - clean, but flat

O: this might have been a more dynamic, more interesting beer had the base tripel been better and the blend showcasing more of the gueuze... gonna hesitate to recommend this to customers

750mL into a tulip. Pours a hazy honey color w/ a soft white head, decent lacing, moderate carb.

Aroma is fruity and yeasty; apples and pears, Belgian yeast, fresh grass. Earthy, spicy.

Taste is likewise fruit-forward with some nice cider and juice notes, pear skins, and an earthy, spicy quality too. Just a light lactic acidity from the gueuze. Great balance, very clean.

Mouthfeel is soft and delicate, but medium-bodied. This beer has weight but it's deceptively light on the palate.

Overall a really nice tripel. I was expecting something more sour because of the "Gueuze" in the name, and I'm not really getting much of that (although more as it warms). But I'm enjoying this quite a lot. Would definitely buy again, despite the high price.

750 ml bottle into chalice, best before 6/8/2016. Pours lightly hazy golden orange color with a 1 finger dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with moderate streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of pear, sour apple, grape, lemon, raisin, clove, pepper, hay, grass, oak, light leather, funk, honey, candi sugar, light vinegar, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of the Tripel/Gueuze counterparts with nice complexity of yeast esters and moderate malt balance. Taste of lemon zest, pear, apple, grape, raisin, pepper, clove, hay, grass, honey, candi sugar, light funk, light oak, light vinegar, and yeast earthiness. A bit of earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, light fruits, clove, pepper, light funk, honey, candi sugar, light vinegar, and earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of Belgian/wild yeast esters; with moderate malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth, moderately crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice take on a blended style. Very nice overall balance of both styles with good complexity; very smooth and crisp to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours golden with a fine white foam etched atop. Smells like a belgian yeast, some hints of funk, plenty of sweet golden ale. Taste is metallic, sweet, with sweet corn and some bicarbonate. The flavor really tastes like a watered down tripel, some spices. Thin and sharply carbed with a dry finish. Meh.

Tasted at a Vanberg and Dewulf event. Lovely dry yeasty notes with pleasant lingering fruit in the background. Incredibly balanced and delicious for an accident! Great food beer as well. Has enough of a dry backbone to pair nicely. Could even be good for thanksgiving. mmmm...

750ml bottle poured into a Unibroue chalice.

A: Dull, hazy golden color. Three fingers of rocky white head retain nicely. Scraggly and spotty lacing.

S: Soft grainy scent. Green apple skin tartness. Slight must. Doughy. Peppery spice and clove become more predominant as it warms.

T: Acidic sour tastes. Strong lemon. Green apple. Musty. The sour kick softens and subsides as the tripel part of the blend begins to take over. Lots of pear. Pepper and clove phenols. Yeasty. Doughy malt base. Pineapple and tropical esters. The finish is a bit dull and faintly sour with fading tastes of yeast and phenol spice.

M: Medium bodied. Full and very chewy. Moderate scrubbing carbonation. Great texture.

O: More innovation on the Belgian front results in an interesting blend. Nicely drinkable and refreshing. I'm really digging the mouthfeel.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, fruit, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with sour fruit and spice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but the blend of the two styles is a bit muddled.
