Edit... My 2nd visit in 9/2011 was very different than my first.

We arrived at the bar pretty late 1:30 AM local time. It was a couple days after the big Stone Tap Take over/Zwane Day. Jean the owner saw us on the patio sipping on a Wadasa (30 Euros which is pretty reasonable for that beer) stopped by our table and started to talk beer. Jean was a GREAT guy. He stayed open late for us and even gave us a beer from his personal stash of Kernel beers.

I was enlightend my Jean as to why some of his beers have such a high pricepoint which really bothered me on my last visit. "we don't have many bottles and we want to make them last. any-one that buys one of those will be getting a ton of stuff on the house" I believed him and it made complete sense.

I really enjoyed my 2nd trip here.

Well worth a stop even at 1:30 AM:)

I was not really impressed with this place. Maybe I am a traditionalist but this place is very very high priced and lacks character.

I had an afternoon to kill while waiting for a train in Brussels so we decided to stop in.

Yes they have a ton of drafts. Some of them were very rare. But 3-5 Euro for a lambic pour? That is as expensive as what I paid for a draft of Fou Fone here in Boston a while back. That is very high compared to other spots also. Pitchers of Lambic?? Maybe I am too traditional but something just doesn't seem right about that. Pitchers of Jupiler or Maes yes but Lambic?

The Bottle selection had rarities for sure but 200 + Euro for a Millenium Geuze. Wow that is steep! Especially since I spent 40 Euro on a bottle at another place the night before right outside Brussels.

Lacks any of the "Belgian" character of so many of the other places I have visited while traveling there. It just seemed like this was a place for tourists stopping through Brussels.
It seemed as if this was just a trendy new bar that really could exist anywhere.

Not a bad place by any means. In fact if I was spending a short period of time in Brussels I might stop in due to the great central location. However, if you are spending any amount of time traveling in Belgium there are so many better places in and around Brussels.

Over the course of my 4 days in Belgium, I was very intentional about trying to hit as many of the top "Beer Destinations" in Brussels and Brugge as I could. By no means was my adventure "comprehensive", but I was successful in making it to a large number of them. And after all was said and done, this was my #1 favorite spot for the trip.

The vibe is hard to describe. It's an amalgam of a number of things. Moeder Lambic is a long narrow building, and as such it's kind of dimly light, and has a bit of a "divey" feel to it, as you head deep back into the place. But simultaneously, it has great big open doors at the front, which they leave wide open, with sunshine pouring in on a nice summer day. And an open patio out front, and as the patio is kind of drawn back in from the road, they have a lot of wide open space out there in between the tables. So it's both bright/vibrant, and dark/divey. On a slow mid-afternoon, they had American gangsta rap playing, amusingly, at a low, chill volume. A musical selection that, by most accounts would have been out of place for this kind of establishment, in this location, during this time of day, but somehow *works* for Moeder Lambic. all the more adding to the complicated-yet-chill vibe. The draft list was written up on chalk boards, and the tables were very well spaced out. I found myself loving everything about it.

The service was great. These guys clearly had (playfully) "messing with Americans" down to a science, as we quickly discovered for ourselves and then amusingly watched as they replayed the scene on others as they shyly shuffled in. If willing to play along (which we were), they clearly enjoyed watching us struggle for a few moments with a couple awkward lines of bad french or flemmish, and welcomed the opportunity to let things get a little awkward, just for a few perfectly timed moments, before switching to near-flawless English for the rest of the visit. Very amusing.

The food menu is limited to a few appetizers, so no full-meals to be had here. But the meat-and-cheese platter we ordered was fantastic.

Beer Selection and Quality was exceptional. We found things here that we didn't find anywhere else. Upon our arrival to Belgium, I had the Adelardus Dubbel, the Stourterik Brussels Stout (a great combo of bitter/roasted and mildly tart), the Bink Tripel, and the Cantillon Cuvee Saint-Gilloise, while my wife opted for the Cantillon Framboise. I initially opted to avoid a number of the Cantillon offerings, nearly not ordering the Saint-Gilloise as well, in anticipation of my upcoming visit to the Cantillon brewery.

The brewery visit was very cool, and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting. But after taking the self-guided tour, I opted to cut the tasting room sampling session short and return to Moeder Lambic, as the selection of Cantillon beers here exceeded what could be found at the brewery! As such, I had a Cantillon Faro and a Val-Dieu Grand Cru during the return stop.

A great Belgian beer bar, unlike any other I visited during my trip. My personal favorite, and therefore a highly recommend beer destination for me.

A quick jaunt from Cantillon. Nice layout inside, with a rather large bar, and plenty of seats, as well as a large outside area. Beer selection was great, with lots of lambic choices (including many from Cantillon, and a couple you can only get here). There was an Italian beer tap takeover when I visited, but still a wide variety of Belgian goodies...with close to 50 taps, you can't really go wrong. They also had a good bottle list, including some 'loons, but these were at drastically inflated prices...like over 3 times the price that the same bottles cost at the brewery right down the street.

Food options were somewhat limited, but being quite hungry after the train from Bruges and a morning at Cantillon, I chose the meat and cheese plate, which was one of the pricier items, but well worth it I felt: a basket of bread, and a hearty quantity of good meats and cheese that completely hit the spot.

Service was pretty lousy. I've said it before, but bartenders in this country all seem to be honey badgers...they just don't care. Got my first beer fairly quickly, finished it, then sat there with an empty glass for like 15 minutes until I finally got the chance to flag down another bartender, as my original one went off to joke around with a coworker without even looking back at the bar. Simple things like offering water, asking if you need another drink, simple friendliness, or even a word or two of conversation; none of these existed here. I shouldn't have to get up and look for service while at a bar. And everyone behind the bar had this glum look like they were depressed beyond all measure.

It's pretty much a given that during any trip to Brussels, you'll inevitably find yourself here. Would I go back? I suppose so, somewhat begrudgingly. Despite the bad service, I'd be a sucker for the beer list.

Beer selection was by far the best. Lambic and cask options were the best I have seen. Service was pretty mixed regarding speed, but knowledge was always good, and very passionate about beer

Easily the best place in town to find quality local beer on tap. About 40 - 50 taps when I was there, 10 of which were spontaneous fermentation. West Coast feel. Relatively quiet. Very reasonable prices for beer, food was a bit pricey, but slightly above average.
