Served from a 375 bottle at Delerium in Brussels into a simple bar glass. Nice appearance - dark gold with a thick, dense stark white head that lasts and lasts. Aroma is mellow and subdued with very little funkiness. Prunes with a touch of citrus. The body is very wet and residual sugars persist. I like my Geuze dry and this simply does not deliver. Dried apricot and prune plavors give way to a light grapefruit finish. Not a very good example of the style.

Note on Brewery: I placed this beer with De Koninck since that is what the information on the bottle indicated to me, however, Tim Webb's book indicates that this is brewed by Boon and other websites have it listed with Mort Subite's brewer...

A: cloudy apricot, thick steadfast head.

S: Brett and funk in abundance, lemon juice, a little bit of a urine smell (gross I know, but that's just what I smell)

T: pure unadulterated bitterness, bile, cider funk, vinegar.

M: crisp and light, strong ceaseless carbonation.

O: pretty much your standard Belgian sour. Though a little boring, it's drinkable and hits the spot when your craving the style.

I think this was a bottle from 2009. The best by date said 2029. 750ml

Clear golden color. Pillowy white head. Very effervescent.
Strong brett and lemons in the aroma. Must, vanilla sweetness, sweat, and hay. Taste is more brett forward and has a light bile flavored acidity. Dry bitter brett finish. The beer leaves a ghostly fresh green apple flavor on the tongue which is interesting.

Pour is a transparent rusty orange with an off white tight bubbly head. Fairly rindy funk, light yeast and spice, some sweet golden fruits, caramel, metallic acetic note. The funk is there in the taste, a bit dusty and some leathery rind, light phenol, yeasty spice, sweet caramel and golden fruits flitter in with acetic notes in back. The body is light with a soft palate and moderate carbonation.

I think of DeKoninck as the Antwerp brewery which makes a drinkable amber ale for the market, not the maker of gueuze. Should be interesting to try. Comes in a corked and caged 375ml bottle. On to the beer:

Chrome orange colored mixed with hues of sunlight yellow. The head forms bubbly and over an inch thick on top before settling to a lace. A little bit of lace is rung around the glass. The aroma is at least going in the right direction. Straightforward sour with a kiss of lemon cleaner and blanket.

Sourness is on the mark. A plain sourness makes itself note with a touch of lemon rind and the taste of iron. It isn't super complex as other gueuze can be. Its mouthfeel hits the mark with its light body and gentle bubbly carbonation.

De Koninck Gueuze is not a superstar in the world of sour ales. It is however a workable option during the late afternoon.

2010 vintage, 375ml bottle, opened 12/9/2011

A: Deep golden body, with a large bubbly head that quickly crashed to a thin skim, a few stray steaks of lacing

S: Bright citric acidity and musty oak. A nice funky character promises good things to come...

T: Those good things aren't delivered. A pleasant, but muted citric complexion up front is left with nothing in the middle and the lightest bit of funk in the finish. Generally hollow, but pleasant.

M: Ultimately, the problems in the taste are mirrored by the watery, empty mouthfeel in the middle. Not much in the way of acidity or sourness.

O: A mild gueuze, that may serve some purpose for someone, but that person isn't me.

De Koninck Geuze looks like liquid marmalade and has a campfire-like glow. Its head persists only because of a continuous stream of bubbles but these prove very inefficient and leave no lasting lace. Still, looking at the beer turns out far more agreeable than smelling or tasting it...

The aroma is odd... but not in the usual way that Lambics tend to be. There's no doubt that wild yeast- and bacteria-fermented ales, aged for years in oak barrels in a dusty, spider-ridden basements have a 'stink' - but theirs is distinctive and appealing. This one just smells plain bad. Comparing it side-by-side (as I did) with *real* gueuze makes things worse.

The taste is a mix of cereal (heavily sweetened with corn syrup) and plain white sugar. There is little or no malt to speak of, just sucrose, glucose, fructose, or whatever the hell adjunct they diluted the beer with. It tastes of little but sugar and corn syrup. I consider myself somewhat of a cicerone and sommelier, but you need a food chemist to describe these off-flavours.

An equally frustrating and frankly insulting experience as Mort Subite Gueuze, I'll repeat myself from that review: Gueuze is not for everyone and commercialized gueuze, though more tame, has no more widespread appeal. The contents of this bottle tasted like vomit so far as I was concerned. That may be immature to say, but it reflects a very real disgust.

Authentic Gueuze is the opposite of industrial beer: sour (rather than sweet), naturally carbonated (as opposed to forced carbonated), a hand-blended art (not a technology dependent science), driven by merit (not advertising), a consciously traditional and niche product (as opposed to something that cashes-in mass appeal with whatever trend is current)...

Hence, De Koninck Geuze is the airplane food equivalent of the style. I appreciate any efforts at reviving and popularizing Lambic, but products this bad are not doing the style (nor its potential consumers) any favours. This brewery makes a reasonably good mainstream Belgian ale and they should stick to that. Brew Lambics traditionally or leave the tradition to the real lambic brewers.

I had this in Belgium, I assume it was a champagne nip bottle, but my notes don't indicate, other then that I poured it into my gueuze tumbler. Gueuze De Koninck is a dark dirty gold with a big white head that leaves heavy lace.

Smell is great, nice tropical fruit notes, honey, with light funk.

Taste is initially funky, sour lemon, but it's not overly acidic, more of a dry, mineral, saison like character. Nice bready malt, with light sweetness and great balance overall.

Mouthfeel is dry and crisp, with a medium light body.

Drinkability is very good, this was a great gueuze, enjoyable without blistering funk, very refined and well made. Obviously my experience is the polar opposite of the previous reviewers, not sure why that would be unless they significantly retooled the blend (or as he mentioned, perhaps different blenders make different batches for De Koninck). I probably got this from Bier Temple in Brussels.

Glass: Cantillon gueuze glass

Supposedly a product from the Boon stable, though the bottle shows no indication of this. DeKoninck Gueuze is an easy-drinking version of the style that balances sweetness and tartness, yielding a gueuze with a slightly fruity edge. Generally refreshing, if not the most complex and intricate attempt at the style. If this were readily available, I wouldn't hesitate to enjoy it again.

Pours a 1cm head of fairly clean, white bubbles that has average retention of about a minute, fading to a thick ring around the body of the glass. Lacing is minimal, a few small dots and lines along the walls of the glass. Body is a golden orange color, about 50-60% opaque, with plentiful and quite active carbonation. Light brings out brighter orange and slight caramel tones.

Aroma is pleasant, fairly standard gueuze-like, though somewhat light. Acidic (tart) without being overly so, fruity (apricot and unripe peach) with a hint of oak and very faint cheese-funk in the background.

Front of palate is balanced between tartness and sweetness, with flavors reminiscent of tart apple and pear tossed with lemon juice and apple cider vinegar. Mid-palate of mild acidic tartness, featuring lemon citrus and tart, unripe peach and apricot. Back of palate is moderately tart, with slight solvent or acetone amidst slight apricot and unripe peach. After a brief flash of tartness, aftertaste is surprisingly sweet and rather fruity (apricot, unripe peach), with just a touch of acidic tartness in the background.

Beer is medium-light in body, with medium-high to high carbonation levels, resulting in a strong fizziness that quickly foams the beer on the palate: you first feel tingling, then more soothing foam. Closes semi-dryly, with moderate residual stickiness on the palate.
