India Pale Ales are distinguished by an eminent hop flavor, bitterness and aroma. Royale 41 is no exception to the rule. This Imperial IPA acquires its stately title from the 41st parallel – the latitudinal mark that runs through our brewery in the Northern Hemisphere and the hop-growing region of New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere. Loaded with American and New Zealand hops, and fermented with an American yeast, this is a union fit for nobility.

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, golden-yellow color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled very piney with toasted caramel. Very malty tasting with a strong piney bitterness.

Quite pretty, good foam, lace. Nothing special to smell. Tastes okay, I'm not crazy about it but it is astonishingly complex and definitely enjoyable for all the different stuff going on. Feels quite smooth and alcoholic, which is fun.

a really good big ipa, exploding with new zealand hoppy goodness, complex and bold, but still somehow really drinkable for its strength, a different kind of double ipa that is at once west coasty but also assertively dry hopped, and doesnt seem to rely on any sort of sweet or richer malts for balance, its balanced on its own without that heaviness, which i think is its real success. it showcases these hops extremely well, but also hides its alcohol strength with the best of them, even as it warms, i would not have pegged this to be nearly as strong as it is! there has to be some nelson in here, i get that fruity bright sauv blanc grape element right away in both aroma and flavor, and also pick up a whole heap of honeydew melon and lime, soe minerals too, an awesome dry hop complexion but also backed up by some oily northwestern grapefruitiness, maybe some simcoe or even centennial in here as well, excellent mix of two hop worlds here! there is a decadence this that isnt in the form of sugar or body which is super cool, and its as fresh as they come. its so clear and refined and bubbly, even refreshing for what it is, a double ipa unlike many others, and a really excellent beer all up. this place is rad, and they are making some really tasty beers!

Poured from 12oz bottle into glass. Stamped on label is '0222 199'.
Cloudy, deep gold colored body, with an orange tint. Two finger white head settles to bubbly cap. Sheets of lacing from the head.
Aroma is malt sweetness and citrus, mostly orange.
Taste is sweet malt and orange citrus hops. Has a little melon interval. Progresses into citrus rind. Late taste profile brings the bitterness, which lingers into the aftertaste.
Medium mouth feel, with a little syrup. Moderate alcohol burn comes through.
An attractive appearing and well made higher ABV IPA.

On tap:
Pours a light burnt orange, very hazy but not completely blocking light. Fine head with medium collar withou much lacing.

Taste is orange zest, a lightly malt sweetness and a citrus rind to slightly earthy bitterness. A bit of alcohol fume heat gains as it warms.

Nose has a little melon aspect combined with the citrus rind.

The bitterness is tame for the claimed 100IBU, though the 9% ABV becomes noticeable. No overpowering notes, but a tasty, somewhat balanced citrusy IPA.

From notes. L: Gold amber with a light haze, rocky offwhite foam cap. S: minty, herby citrus.T: Big malt followed by fruit, citrus and big hops. Attack goes malt, malt-fruit, hop biter, hop fruit, hopp bitter, then long lingering bitter aftertastes – not a harsh bitterness, a little grass in the bitterness, some astringency from the hops F: Very creamy, creamy head, above medium body O: One of their better offerings.

Unknown how old this bottle is, but I believe it has some age due to some sweetness. It still tastes delicious. At first there are nice honey and caramel malts, then some orange and grapefruit but the hop bitterness comes in on the finish. I like how this beer has a 4.1 rating to match the label. :)
