High quality pale, caramel, chocolate and Munich malts get a boost with roasted and chocolate rye. Dark and Light Belgian Candy Sugar is added to the kettle during the boil for smoothness and flavor. Belgian yeast gives off some fruity esters and the brew is delicately hopped so as to not overpower the malt flavors.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a mug. Looks like root beer in the glass, almost black with a fluffy head of light tan foam. Roasted malts and chocolate up front, rather sweet with a silky mouthfeel. A pleasant bitterness on the finish that became more pronounced as the beer warmed in the glass. Very nice offering from this Iowa brewery. (340 characters)

Served in a snifter.

A : This beer pours an appreciable amount of khaki colored head. The body is chocolate mocha colored and is almost fully opaque. The khaki lace sticks to the sides of the glass in etchings.

S : Lots of chocolate, vanilla, cocoa, and a slight butterscotch whiff as well. There's some faint earthiness behind the nose that compliments nicely. Not much for hop in the smell.

T : A bit dirty tasting, with lots of earth and charred malts, but it's not overly bad. I'd say that this is what Portage SHOULD have been, as it's fairly similar in flavor but much smoother overall. Some smooth caramel and a slight nip of bitter hop fill out the finish, complete with ground coffee.

F : A slight buzz of carbonation underneath an otherwise mild creaminess. There's a watery threshold underneath the current of creaminess...it's actually feeling like it mimics what a beer looks like - the body, and then the creaminess. It ends with a dusty bite of powder.

O : This is a decent porter. It's fairly unique, although I didn't taste the rye. It's what New Belgium's Portage "should have" been, as it's similar in taste but much smoother and more refined. I do like it, just not absolutely wild about it. (1,219 characters)

Poured into a balloon glass.

Look: Black as espresso beans with a cream colored head that recedes to a thick ring around the glass, light foamy lacing.

Aroma: Dark roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate, coffee, malts.

Taste: There's an immediate dry rye backbone, then bitter coffee and dark chocolates come in. A bitter finish displays the hop bill.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, dry.

Overall: This is pretty tasty, and I like the rye component. (445 characters)

A brewery I've never had before. Tasted 18 March 2014.

Appearance is fine. Pours a very dark coffee brown, clear at the edges. Half-finger of medium brown-tan head, okay retention and lacing.

Smell is nice. The rye spice and coffee notes from the malts bring depth and variety. I like it.

Taste goes astray. It's not really bad, but it's not really good either. Hard to pinpoint exactly what I don't like. It's like under-brewed coffee, or chewing on roasted wood. Lacking fullness, and lacking flavors. Something is not quite right, though I can't put my finger on it.

Feel is okay. Kinda flat, watery. Meh.

Mediocre porter. The rye is a nice touch in the nose, but the taste falls flat. (693 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into a nonic.
6% ABV, "Leave sediment in bottle, Serve at 48°F"

A - The nonic pint is filled with a totally black brew upon the pour and topped by a short khaki head that leaves some nice lacing on the beer clean glass but disappears rather quickly.

S - Sharp rye spice and roasted chocolate malts make for robust, inviting aroma of slightly burnt rye bread toast and coffee with a dark chocolate creamer swirled in. Wafts of peat smoke, unlit maduro cigar, and distressed leather give the background of this beer a deeper complexity to ponder.

T - Aside from a kiss of sweetness in the aroma from the added Belgian candi sugar, there's no Belgian influence on the beer until it hits the lips, where witbier-like Belgian spice undertones of light spice and citrus give the otherwise American porter an odd twist. The rye and chocolate still maintain a foothold over the flavor but the nuanced addition of yeast spins it a little south.

M - Of all the Peace Tree beers I've had so far, the soft lack of carbonation suits this one the best as it's rich body smoothly slides across the tongue to a finish balanced by roasted malt bitterness.

O - Peace Tree's Rye Porter puts two unique spins on the standard American Porter for an interesting outcome. The Belgian yeast used to ferment this dark beer doesn't quite pan out for me with it's pronounced characteristics but, the addition of rye to the roasted chocolate malt makes for a great combination that finishes with overall quality. (1,510 characters)

Pours a black with just a 1-finger of a tan head with good lacing. The aroma is of chocolate, malt but no rye was detected. Taste was roasted chocolate with a bitter finish with a hint of rye. I liked the taste but didn't the bitter finish. Overall it was just "OK". (266 characters)

A - Dark, black, no light comes through, typical to what I'd expect.

S - Chocolate and malt definitely come through strong initially, with very little rye present.

T - Directly opposite from the nose, a muddled, earthy taste with subtle hints of chocolate come through with a strong rye finish.

M - Very light and thin, not really what I would expect from the appearance.

O - A different take on the style. The nose is most appealing, but an easy drinker and one I will have again. (485 characters)

A 12 oz bottle (love the stubby-ish shape), picked up on a Labor Day trip to Iowa; it's been in the fridge ever since I returned with it (and many other Midwest beers) to Oregon. Poured to a pint glass (HopLeaf Bar) after a few warming minutes.

Eye-catching label: "Get your own bags, this is no ordinary porter! Peace Tree Rye Porter gets a boost from malted rye and chocolate rye as well as Belgian candy sugar for a smooth and complex flavor. Belgian yeast is added to complement the chocolate and rye character and the brew is delicately hopped so as not to overpower the maltiness. Pair it with chocolate for a special treat!"

IN HEAVEN THERE IS NO BEER
[say it ain't so!]

A: Plenty dark enough, aptly 'porter'-ish - the darkness is virtually impenetrable. Head is pretty small, a stumpy light tan skim that doesn't even reach a half-finger. Good lacing, sticking in melting ribbons.

S: Pleasant scent of cocoa and musty/kilned malt - sorta muddy and earthy. Hints of spice, vanilla and a touch of flowers (I swear I smell some lavender). Am I crazy?

T: Oooh, I like the chocolate here! Dark and bitingly bitter, with a fleeting lemony tank. Lots of mineral/chalky flavors, sooty, dirty, coffee bean-roast. Those don't sound like good descriptors, but all work well here. To balance, there's just enough caramel sweetness and a little fruit (apple?) to balance that 'rye' (wry?) spicy tang. A sipper, one to mull over and enjoy the nuances within.

M: Generally smooth, medium-bodied. A long-lasting ashy bitterness and a thin sheen of grit (maybe I should have heeded the label's admonishment "LEAVE SEDIMENT IN BOTTLE" (in my defense, these 'instructions' are near the bottom of the label, in a thinner and unremarkable typeface...)

O: A bit better than the sum of its parts, it's a 'good' porter - easy to sip, well-flavored and -balanced... with nice, subtle hints at 'Belgium' that show up more as it warms. I'm very glad to have bought one of these (@ John's in Iowa City); if I lived in the area, it would probably be a staple. (2,045 characters)

Pours a chocoloate colored brown body beneath from frothy mocha head that patiently dissolves to leave a loose lacing around the glass.

The aroma deceives the senses with faint chocolate malt and spicy rye. Not your typical porter aroma. Seems to be some earthy hops hidden in there as well.

The flavor also offers chocolate malt and spicy rye but as it warms the smokiness appears as well.

Medium in body and carbonation with a lightly spicy finish.

Certainly a different porter. Tasty and unique, I can see what the brewery was going for. Perhaps a bit lighter than your traditional porter. (596 characters)

Some nice chocolate here, but it is clashing with Rye and with a mouthfeel that lacks the body and caramel lusciousness a porter should deliver. The dryness from the rye and the expected sweetness of the style do not work well together, nor does the belgian yeast here, which adds some unwanted esters. (302 characters)

Acquired via trade from cpolking so a big “Thank You” goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a large beige head that fades very slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains coffee, chocolate, roasted malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a creamy and hearty roasted malt character and sweet flavors of coffee and chocolate. There are background flavors of dark fruit and spices along with a mild but complementary hops presence that creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, it’s a very solid porter but there are others in the style that I would choose first. (876 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Slightly hazy, dark brown color with no head. Scant lacing remains on the glass.

S: Rustic and husky grain splits between roast and toast. Slightly sulfurous fermented plant is detracting, but overall smell is diluted due to carbon dioxide.

T: Begins off-dry, with early acidity and weak scorched malt. Vanilla is suggested into the middle where lesser acidity persists in the absence of other flavors. A whiff of burnt coffee clings to the palate late but otherwise the finish is mildly bitter and slightly herbaceous.

M: Thin viscosity, watery and acidic on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This unsatisfying porter applies rye to a style that never really asked for it. Grain qualities become thinner where they should be full and satisfying--while it is probably possible to craft an appealing rye-focused porter, this isn't it. Qualities are discordant and one-dimensional when the whole product is considered. (982 characters)

It pours a dark cola brown, very clear with a thin ring of tan head.

The smell is a strange mix of roasted barley and tinny metallic oxidization.

The flavor is very rye, dry and grainy a bit of spice and a big shot of smokey and roasted barley, not much else going on here. Needs a bit of sweetness to even it out a bit, feels very hollow in the middle.

The mouthfeel is very thin and dry for a porter, feels and taste like a complete lack of any crystal malts which is a bit strange for a beer like this.

Below average to average at best, nothing to get excited about. (573 characters)

Bottle into a pint glass. No expiration/bottle date. '1118' printed over end of the surgeon general's warning.

a Aggressive pour formed a finger's worth of tan head that quickly dissipated. Dark black with a dark brown hue at the edges. Modest lacing that slipped down the glass during tasting.

s Smoky malt. Barely noticeable rye at the back of the nose after a long smell. Cellar.

t Malt on the sides of the tongue and a smoky aftertaste on the back. Searching for rye spice/boldness and only finding weak caramel.

m Somewhat watery. Smooth in the middle. Flat is the final impression as the taste finishes.

o Tried with some Hershey's dark chocolate after searching the label for an expiration date and reading Peacetree's recommendation to pair the two. Brought out some sweet/bitter chocolate flavors in the beer as expected and did enhance my overall rating by 0.5, but still let down on the promise of rye. (918 characters)

Pours a chocolaty brown with a small head. Nose is chocolates, some spicy rye malts, and some fruitiness from the Belgian yeast. The palate starts with some chcoloate malts that fade to a modicum of spicy rye. Sweet fruits are on the finish and are actually throughout the rest of the beer. Medium body with a spritz of carbonation. Solid porter...the Belgian yeast and the rye add a nice complexity to it. (406 characters)

This bottle was poured into a glass stein.

Appearance- The opaque, black body has some beige highlights. The tan head is only a slight ring around the glass.

Smell- Roasted malt blends with some buttery notes, the result is very akin to peanut butter and toast. That is kind of strange. I am assuming Peace Tree is using the same Belgian yeast, and that could be contributing to the wacky sweet and roasty smells.

Taste- There is a lot of roast and char in here. The belgian quality is coming through in the form of earthiness and banana. There is a little bit of nuttiness mid-drink. I am not picking up any of the sweet quality that had been in the nose. It is really interesting, and ultimately, not bad.

Mouth feel- This is one of the thinner porters I have had recently. And it is not all that creamy. Roasted notes have a way of taking care of that, although I feel the carbonation could have been handled better. At least it is slick over the tongue.

Overall- It is an interesting beer for sure. This is where I feel Peace Tree maybe could have done without the sweetness that is present in the beer, and could have beefed up the body.

It is worth trying, but after that, you probably do not need to have it again. (1,229 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a quasi-snifter.
A: Pours a deep brown with a beautiful creamy head. No lacing.
S: Roasted, with notes of sweet whiskey and coffee.
T: Coffee and chocolate, with cherry, very little alcohol taste.
M: Creamy, but iced-coffee thin.
O: Soiid porter, but I'd like something with a bit more body. That's really my only complaint - flavors are on point. Also not tasting too much rye, but that doesn't bother me anything terrible. Will buy again late this fall. Tasted great with Mast Brothers Chocolate w/ Hazelnuts. (544 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Peace Tree pint.

A: Aggressive pour reveals a dark copper color, barely translucent, with two fingers of billowy, pale tan head. Good retention and some lace.

S: Smoky, roasted rye with a little caramel in the background. Some belgian esters also present.

T: Sweet, caramel rye up front, mellows in the middle where the esters come out, finishes with bitter coffee. Some milk chocolate also present.

M: Not too heavy, nice creamy feel.

O: A tasty porter, and the belgian yeast does make it stand out from the crowd. Worth a try; I'll buy it again. (586 characters)

Funky little bottle here.

A: Pours a mediocre dark black with a one finger tan head on top. Decent retention with the head reducing to a thin layer on top within a few minutes. Lacing all around the glass.

S: A little bit of chocolate and some roasted malt. A faint spice note from the rye.

T: Some chocolate on the front end which transitions to some lightly roasted malt and a little bit of coffee. Not sure where the rye is, can't really tell that it is there at all.

M: A little thin for my liking in a porter with moderate carbonation. Just seemed a bit lacking in this area.

O: Like the stubby bottle and the label. The flavor profile was decent, but the mouthfeel was a bit thin for my liking. Not a bad brew though at all. (739 characters)

dark garnet brown with a huge tan head on top. Slow receding left tons of lacing down the sides of the glass and really gave it a very nice and very complete look. Aroma is huge, lots of spice at first, caramel, molasses, hints of brown sugar and earth, deep hops. Warming brings out some touches of dark fig like fruit notes but nothing like that warm rye touch that really adds to it. As I take the first sip a really wave of caramel and light peppery rye hit the tongue. Light notes of chocolate that come over it wave after wave. Really quite complex and I have to admit not at all what I was expecting. Still very well done. Warming brings out much more sweetness and balance but at the same time it maintains a big profile. Light booziness kicking in now and the sweet finish has a night light hop bite to it. (815 characters)

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Summit Pint glass.

Appearance: Very dark ruby with nice, foamy tan colored head.

Smell: Smoky, spicy and roasted malt.

Taste: The rye is very evident with strong smoky and spicy overtones. Otherwise, this is a fairly standard, and maybe even mild, Porter, with chocolate, light coffee and just a touch of hops. Can't really taste the Belgian yeast unless I drink the dregs straight, but maybe it adds subtle complexity.

Mouthfeel: Moderately low carbonation (too low actually), fairly smooth but a little thin.

Overall: Nice smoky Porter overall. Not one of my favorites and it has faults, but quite drinkable and I like it. (668 characters)

Into a tulip it pours black with a mahoghany brown highlight to it, dark red in the light. Foam subsides to a thin tan ring, random arcs of lacing and spotty bits cling to the edges.

Smells like AB&J, grape jelly and almond butter (if such a thing existed, wait it does). Roasty and nutty, with fruity tang of preserved fruit jelly.

Lightly roasty, mild rye spice, slightly bitter with some notes of tobacco and dry bakers chocolate. Unfortunately its a little bit thin and watery, though very tasty. A flavorful porter, lacking only in the body department. (560 characters)

A - Pours a dark chocolate brown. 2 fingers of tan head that fades after several minutes. Leaves a moderate amount of lacing on the glass.

S - Hints of coffe and rich, dark rye bread. Also a slight hint of spice and licorice as well as mild floral hop aroma.

T - The kilned rye is very much present in the taste too. Crisp, clean and bready flavor from start to finish. Less prevalent but still noticeable are hints of coffe and sweet malt.

M - Thin body and very drinkable. Average carbonation. Very clean dry finish. (521 characters)

Pours an oily dark brown/black with a ring of tan foam around the glass.

A little bit of chocolate, but the nose is dominated by a sesame oil scent. I'm guessing it's from the rye, but really smells like sesame.

Much like the nose. Getting some chocolate, coffee and sourness from the rye and the sesame oil taste as well. Some toasty notes at the finish and into the aftertaste.

Very smooth and somewhat slick feel with a some frothy carbonation. Medium body.

A nice unique little porter that drinks above averagely. The rye can be a bit much, but this is a nice beer. I like that it is different from the majority of porters out there. (641 characters)
