Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #48 (Jan 2011):

The beer geeks have spoken, demanding an encore batch of this summer seasonal. Poured hearty enough to create an amazing head but not hard enough to draw the yeast into the glass. Slight chill haze to the reddish amber color. Ruby red grapefruit, ripe mangoes, and gritty pinesap resin in the nose tell the story of a very hoppy beer. Smoothness in the medium body. The maltiness provides a thick foundation for the hops to come down hard on--sip after sip, the taste buds get hammered with a uniform bitterness and an explosively complex flavor. Alcohol knocks hard with a clean estery fruitiness. Finishes bitter with some alcohol on the breath.

A: pours a nice, hazy auburn color that grades lighter at the edges. Produces next to no head, and what it does yield disappears quickly. This is not the first Peace Tree beer I've noticed this shortcoming with.

S: the characteristic aromas of the Belgian yeast strain - banana and orange rind in particular here - intermingle nicely with bold hop aromas. (That the yeast and hops share the citrus notes in common is a plus, for sure.)

T: man, too much hops! Any subtleties are pretty much blasted off the map after a split second. Seriously, all I'm getting is a rush of burnt bitterness. OK, maybe the slightest bit of grapefruit up front, but taste betrays the aroma in a major way.

M: not bad - carbonation is strong, body is medium and easy going down.

O: aesthetically, this ranges from high-average to good, but the hoppiness is just overwhelming. Yeah, I know to expect a heavy hop profile from a Double IPA, but there's got to be something else for me to get behind. I'd like to revisit this in the future to see if Peace Tree works the kinks out. They're a very young outfit that I like supporting, so I'll happily give it another go down the road.

A: hazy amber with a sandy tan head. minimal lacing.

S: hops, citrus but overwhelming pine

T: heavy handed with the hops (which is ok for a DIPA) but where's the malt backbone or anything to balance out the hops? I got nothing out of this beer but bitter, acidic hops and alcohol.

M: thin and a tad flat. carbonation could have been a tad better OR I could've had a bad bottle.

D: I would not pick this up again unless to try another batch.

A: Hazy, reddish brown--like cherry tea--with a thin but steady head and decent lacing

S: Loads of hops: pine and spruce as well as citrus fruits mingling in; man, the pine bitterness burns the nostrils; some sweet bready grains underneath but mostsly hops, hops, and more hops with an increasing alcohol presence

T: Bitter hops up front but they fade rather quickly leaving a bready slightly burnt and slightly sweet malt presence; the hops return but not in the same way they make their presence known in the aroma; it's actually kind of balanced and not overwhelmingly boozy but not quite what I was expecting either

F: Actually a touch thin, especially for a DIPA--but the creaminess sets in eventually making up for the initial thinness

O: Well, it had more promise than what it ended up as but it is still a decent DIPA--not something I will actively pursue but not a bad option

This is another great offering from Peace Tree, finally good to see some good beer come out of Iowa.

Appearance is beautifully colored and clear, a little lacking on head though, it took a rather forceful pour and it was not retained well.

Smell is fantastic, you get great citrus hop flavor and nice fruity undertones from the belgian yeast, this is by far the best attribute of this beer.

Taste is also very good, more of the same of the nose but less of the yeasty flavors

mouthfeel is good but lacking in carbonation

drinkability is extremely easy, I couldn't have guessed this was 9%

Poured a medium orange with a very thin light head, just a touch of CO2.

The nose is week for a double IPA, very resiny and plastic, smells like some columbus and not much else.

The flavor is not real good either, a big metallic flavor, maybe a bit oxidized, along with a sharp piney bitterness, a bit of sweetness from the malt and alcohol, but not much in the way of flavor. The beer is even lacking in hop flavors, just loaded with bitterness.

The mouthfeel is a bit on the flat side with a touch of resin.

I bit of let down, as I had heard such good things about this brewery.

Dark saturated orange, soft haze, lasting collar of lace and skim across the surface.

Hugely resinous aroma of dried mango, citrus peel, dank green hops, and a slight cattiness.

Slick and viscous feel, loaded with oily hop resin, traces of alcohol combine and render the taste nearly medicinal. Bitter citrus peel and green botanical flavors are big, also sweet tangerine and lasting piney resin in the aftertaste, light honeyed malt traces linger too after the bitterness subsides. Full bodied and very bitter, the 9% is apparent, and blends a little better as it warms. Overall a big brash DIPA from Iowa, only a small handful of those in existence.

Thanks for this one Eric!

golden amber in color with a nice head of white that was about two inches at first but then slowly settled down into a rich lacing that coated the sides of the glass. Such a sweet, sharp citrus aroma coming off of this one, simply amazing. Like pineapple and grapefruit juice mixed in a glass and hit with a shot of orange, it was simply amazing. First sip sucked the moisture from my palate. Lip smacking good. Sharp, biting citrus flavor, pineapple and grapefruit rule the day here as the richness and juiceness is simply overwhelming. Each sip seemed to get sharper, crisper then the one before. I was in heaven.
