Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into an unbranded short stemmed tulip glass

Pours a burgundy tinged amber capped by a one and half finger off white head. The head dissipates fairly quickly, hints of lacing hear and there which also disappear fair quickly. Caramel malt, vanilla, light oak accents, and whiskey notes on the nose. Opens with light caramel malt and some apple peel. Plenty of vanilla midpalate. Finishes with oak and very prevalent rye whiskey combined with continued caramel and vanilla notes. Light to light-medium silky, smooth body. Overall, this brew was enjoyable, however it certainly isn't a Flanders Red. There is no discernible tartness to it let alone anything that could be considered sour. The barrel characteristics do have a tendency to overwhelm the base beer. This brew would be better served if the characteristics of the base beer came through a bit more and the contributions of the barrel where better integrated. Perhaps less time barrel-aging might help?

A - Dark, murky ruby brown. Pours a nice creamy, smooth, off-white to slightly tan head. Average retention leaving a faint lacing.

S - A little on the faint/weak side for my liking. Some tart raspberry along with other berry aromas. A bit of caramel malt. Oak and hints of vainilla. Nice aroma, but I could use more of it.

T - Amped up version of the nose. The barrel flavors are very nicely integrated. Slightly tart raspberry, strawberry, and the faintest hint of cherry. Some caramel malt. Not really sour, but slightly tart and acidic. Nice kick of vainilla, oak, and whiskey that provide more of a sweetness than a heat kick. These are present in the back throughout, but come out strongest on the finish.

M - Medium body with slightly above average carbonation. Fairly smooth and creamy with a slightly spritzy feel on the finish.

D - Everything is nicely integrated and nothing is over the top. Smooth and easy to drink, especially for the style. The barrels provide great flavor without overpowering the beer. I had no problem finishing a pint of this.

Notes: Not overpowering tart or acidic and not sour at all, but there is a definite tang to this beer. I really like what the Templeton barrels added to this. It goes down very smooth and easy. One of the best beers from Peace Tree.

I kept confusing Peace Tree with Millstream, which is a woeful insult, & so avoiding their beers. After being straightened out I figured I'd take a swing at this one...though my swing is horribly rusty. Another time for that, though, 22 oz. bottle split with my wife after an evening of pulled pork & beer with friends.

The pour is dark red with barely enough carbonation to qualify. Smells like an apple just pulled off the tree - skin still on - in other words, almost nothing. I can smell the apples on the ground, but just barely. Borderline missing.

Templeton Red is certainly the first barrel-aged flanders red I've ever...heard of. The taste is an interesting balance. The tartness is muted & gentle, cut by slightly acidic cherry. Vanilla, barrel, bit of wood, potato(e)s (?), with a side of oddness. Pretty flat. Half a bomber will be just fine.

Very strange beer. Hated the first sip, loved the fourth, then settled in between after that. Unique. Pretty good.
