Stopped by last night after hearing this place has made huge strides beer-wise. It was true! About 15 taps and probably 50-60 bottles. Not at all a bad list. They've gotten a new beer buyer in since I was here last and from talking to him a bit, he seems to have a pretty good idea what he's doing (of course I'm always happy to offer expert advice!). Was here to watch March Madness and ordered a Pliny the Elder on tap as well as a Goose Island Matilda and a Belhaven Scottish Stout in bottles. Also had a "protein-style" burger wrapped in a portobello mushroom and a chicken sandwich. Food was excellent, and the beer quality was good. The place got pretty busy for awhile, but when it wasn't too packed, the bartender was happy to talk about beer. The crowd is a little weird - some young people, maybe some Stanford students, as well as a considerable middle-aged happy hour contingent looking to recapture their lost youth by doing car bombs and the like. Definitely some cougars on the prowl. Quite a few animated drunkards (which I can be myself at times). Prices are average to just a little high. Overall, this is far from being an elite beer bar, but I like what they're doing. Living 10 minutes away, I'll be back.

About 3 years ago this place changed ownership and transitioned from a place where you could get a draught Guinness or a Harp, etc, to a place where you could get a Pliny or an Old Speckled Hen. Plus the Guinness. I now go here every week for the rotating taps alone, but the food and service have also been quite good. If it's slow and you can find a seat, sit at the bar. If it's busy, sit near the kitchen for best table service. Sit outside on the patio if you like cigar smoke. Just a heads up. As an extreme hophead I can't recommend this place enough -- Sculpin, Denogginizer, Hop Stoopid, Dogfish 90 Minute, and several others I would happily consume. Food prices are, well, Menlo Park fair, but everything from onion rings to burgers to BBQ to salads are fine, better than average pub fare.

First trip back to this place after many years. I've always loved the atmosphere of a great old building and bar but they seem to be letting the place go a little bit (not very tidy, not very clean). Seem to have a great tap selection but the night I was there the bartender said their entire tap system had broken so they could only serve bottles. Selection was decent and the bartender was very friendly. He tried hard to be helpful but didn't know that much about what he was serving. He just opened and sat the bottle in front of me - I had to ask for a glass. Plus, only shaker pint glasses. He said they used to have tulip glasses but they broke too easily. Funny because they had plenty of wine glasses which I asked to use for my bottle of Chimay. Food was O.K. I might try again on a different night if I am in the area.

Stopped by this place on a recent trip to Norther California for dinner and drinks. This place is pretty large with high ceilings and a large second floor area. The main bar/restaurant area on the first floor is open with a long bar on the right side and a lot of dining and high top tables. There is also a small area in the back left with more dining tables. Basically, a lot of room for dining and drinking.
The food is of high quality and their menu is pretty extensive, ranging from appetizers and sandwiches to full entrees. My friend and I split the sausage sampler as an appetizer and each ordered the blackened chicken entree. The meal was delicious and the food is the best characteristic of this place.
The service on the other hand was pretty abysmal. There is no one to greet you when you come in so you seat yourself. We sat there for close to thirty minutes before a server came to our table. After giving us a menu she disappeared again for another half an hour. When she came back she took our drink and when we tried to order food she cut us off after ordering appetizers and just left. She walked by our table several times before we were finally able to flag her down and complete the order. I made sure I ordered a second beer or else I still might be sitting there. She was not friendly at all and pretty much gave the worst service I've ever encountered anywhere and I've been to a lot of shitty places. Someone came over to check on us once but they weren't any help. I guess it was still a nice gesture.
The selection was pretty good with a good amount of North CA locals as well one or two east coast beers and a decent amount of imports. They had about 12 beers on tap including Firestone Robust Porter, Pliny the Elder and Bear Republic Racer 5 as well as about 50 bottles from CA, Belgium and other European countries. I was pretty impressed with the selection here.
Overall, I enjoyed this place and would go back again if given the chance. Very good food and a nice selection of craft beers. Hopefully the service will be better next time.
