500ml bottle poured into a stemless wine glass

The beer pours a deep amber color, hues of burgundy, very opaque in complexion with a huge 3 finger head, off white in color that has great retention and leaves behind a large network of soapy lace. The aroma is massively bitter with lots of resinous piney hops, yet also incredible sweet with light wildflower and rich caramel malt with backing alcohol. The flavors are even more bitter with huge amounts of pine and sticky hop oil, light floral tones really bring out the sweet pitted fruit and rich malts, again, with alcohol finishing harshly. The body is very thick, very rich and full, low carbonation and very dry with a harsh, booze laden finish.

Verdict: Super an aggressive DIPA that almost drink like an American Barleywine that seems out of sorts for a 7.80% beer. There is almost zero complexity and a lot of harsh qualities that make this one tough to drink.

The Beers of California

#84

Bottled Date: None

A: Hazy amber with a creamy white foam that settles to a thin layer.

S: Gorgeous malt sugar complexity complemented with earthy, resinous hops served with several scoops of dank, pine, tea, and citrus.

T: Biscuity malt; full, thick, and exploding caramel sweetness, supports the earthy and bitter hop bite. The hops follow the nose with dankness, grapefruit, green tea and pine. The bitterness builds to the finish along with adequate alcohol warmth.

M: Moderate feel, resinous, and good linger; all trademarks of a solid IPA.

O: Bordering Imperial Red territory, this "too dark for style" IPA features some awesome sweet and earthy malts which paired well with the hop bill. Looking forward to getting more of these for the fridge.

Pours clear amber/brown, very dark, but good clarity. Tan colored head on an Imperial IPA, whaaaat?

Aromas of caramel malt, toffee, light coffee roast, burnt caramel, oh yeah, and citrusy hops. Tangerine, orange rind, chocolate.

Lots of the same. Hops take a backseat here, but not overly malty either... Citrus and milk chocolate. Orange rind, bittersweet finish, but not harsh. Vanilla bean, hint of roast. Somehow, this works. Semi-dry finish.

Creamy mouthfeel. Very smooth, no alcohol warmth.

There’s really no style for this. No such thing as an English Imperial IPA, and it's definitely not a Black IPA. Drinkable, nonetheless. But it’s definitely not an American DIPA. Nonetheless, points given for complexity and making this combination of flavors enjoyable.

Appearance-Red to orange on the rim with an off white tight foam.

Smell-Grass and Strawberry hard candy that reminds me of strawberry bubbleicious gum from Little League.

Taste-Bitter grass hops with some of the strawberry from the nose although a lot more subtle.

Mouthfeel-Heavy IPA but a good balance and unexpectedly clean finish

Overall-My favorite that I've had from Strand so far. Killer nose.

Consumed at BoHo Hollywood - September 12th, 2012. Reviewed from notes.

Clear dark brown with deep, deep amber highlights. A three-finger dense foam head sits atop this beer, primarily because they blew the keg on my pour. Interestingly, I had one from a bottle as well and the head is similar; meringue-like and very clingy and sticky. Great sheeting/lacing.

Slight aroma of soap and esthery alcohol. A very mild aroma for a DIPA.

Dark roasted grain character on palate, more toffee than coffee. Quite bitter. Aftertaste is resiny, citric hop flavor.

Medium body, prickly carbonation, slightly dry finish.

Not quite a "black IPA" but certainly darker than the standard issue. Sort of splits the difference between hop bombs and malt bombs. Dare I say "balanced" with a slight favoring of malt over hops? Yes, I dare. Nice beer and a nice change from tooth-enamel stripping hop juice.

A dark copper red in color with a nice creamy head lots of lace left on the glass. the mouth taste is very sharp. Taste is a good combination of bitter and malt. Lots of earthy malts and carmel sweetness, the hop bitterness is nice in the after taste. the 7.8 ABV is not over powering, no alcohol after taste. As a imperial IPA it is very good. Will pare well with meats and strong cheeses.

Deep copper amber with a dank almost off green edge to it. Foamy head with the same dank not quite greenish tinge to it. Hopalicious.

Nose is juicy fruity primarily. Some grassy verdency to it, resinous pine and some citrus/tropical fruit on the background.

The taste is largely the same vein. Kind of a medley of hop flavours. Starts off with some juicy grassy resin, but is definitely more of the pine/tea/dry flavour. Fierce bitterness at the very finish. Tasty, super glad my sister brought it with her when she came to visit!

On tap at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Pours a clear dark copper with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and tropical fruits. Taste is much the same with a citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.
