Look-Dark cherry wood and tan foam out of the bottle.

Smell-Tootsie roll and red fruit.

Taste-Black cherry and strawberry blended nicely with dusty chocolate candy.

Mouthfeel-Heavy, full bodied, black ipa. Good finish.

Overall-Very good offering from Strand although it feels and tastes a lot more like a porter to me than an IPA.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, nearly opaque, with a one finger light brown head with good retention and lacing. An intriguing aroma of dark malt, piney hops, anise and hints of caramel. Flavor is bright resiny pine hops, light toasted malt, mixed citrus, finishing with lingering almost resiny pines hops. Medium bodied. An interesting black ale that looks like it's going to be toasty from dark color, but actually has a lighter, aromatic pine and citrus hop taste. The finish is resiny and estery, and probably the best part of this pleasant ale. Different enough in profile from the Northwest representatives of this style that I don't chafe at a style name other than CDA. A quite nice change of pace from the local hopped black ales. Glad I could finally try this brewery and will return for more.

On tap at Beer Belly in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a hazy crimson-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Thick swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and slight citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and citrus flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a smell that reminds me more of a stout than a black IPA.

Quite a lovely red-chestnut color in the globe. The beige head is admirable and the carbonation is plentiful. There is a nice sudsy mouthfeel. The aroma is just peculiar-- dried jujube comes to mind, with a musty garage smell.

Grainy with an odd resiny flavor. This doesn't taste like roasted malt, yet it's so dark. Stir-fried, maybe? Hops are up-front with the bitterness, but the flavor is elusive. Brewer says the hops are Magnum and Perle, for what it's worth.

After some tentative sipping, this remains a mystery. The bitterness, however, gets bolder. It tastes grapey, with a hint of camphor. Aftertaste is black, charred toast. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.
