Very good looking beer. Almost black in the glass, but a deep brown when back lit.

Can smell the aroma of hops. I think this has too much hops, at least for my taste.

Taste is pleasant. Although the smell of hops is quite present, the taste is more balanced. The tastes are good as it goes across your tongue, but it leaves behind a somewhat bitter aftertaste at the back of my mouth.

This is an easy beer for me to pour down my throat! I would say that the mouthfeel is pleasant. A heavier feel than lighter beers, but I think, a somewhat light feel for a porter.

Overall this is a pretty tasty beer, but the hops component seems to be more than I like - as someone who doesn't particularly care for hops...

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Thank you Shan8454 for this in trade.

Appearance: Darker brown, with a thin beige head. No lacing on the glass.

Smell: Malts, nutty, and some fruity notes.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of malts, bitter, and some nutty flavor in the background.

Overall: Personally not a fan of porters, but I will give this one credit it is good. A die-hard porter fan I would imagine would enjoys this one a lot.

Kudzu Porter pours a very dark reddish mahogany topped by a durable tan head that leaves excellent lacing.

Aroma: more hops than expected lend an unusual citrus nose, but there is too little in the way of roasted malts.

Taste: a bit hoppy, but on par with some other American Porters. Thankfully, there's plenty of dark roasted malt too. The dark malt brings a light smoke and a bit too much burnt quality.

M: medium+ body; Nicely carbonated,

Overall: an unusual but nice American porter worth trying.

12oz bottle, day 2 of the 2013 Craft Beer Advent Calendar. 'Kudzu', an apt name for a beer from the American southeast, with one of the better taglines about the product therein that I've seen on a label of late: "Careful, it will grow on you!"

This beer pours a clear, dark red-brick brown hue, with one finger of bubbly, loosely foamy tan head, which leaves a bit of spooky skewed webbed lace in places around the glass as things duly recede.

It smells of bittersweet cocoa powder, bready caramel malt, lactic sourness, a mild oily nuttiness, burnt coffee, and a vegetal, green sort of reserved hoppiness. The taste is more gritty dark chocolate, roasted caramel malt, fairly innocuous milk solids, pithy stale nuts, faint bitter coffee grounds, a hint of citrus rind, and rather subtle earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is a bit peppy, but mostly just supportive in its plebeian duties, the body a decent medium weight, generally smooth, and maybe a wee bit creamy, in the whipped air sense. It finishes off-dry, the sweetness of the bready malt tempered yet by the lingering dry coffee, char, and musty earthy hops.

Not too shabby a porter, overall, the basic elements are all there, except those that would differentiate this as an American version of the style. Yes, I'm nattering on about hops, and I fear that while this offering may once have had a complement befitting its fecund moniker, it has been squandered away by all the time it has been squired away in that big box 'o random beer, gussied up for this year's Yuletide.

I had this beer in a bottle. As far as appearance, the bottle was a bottle; nothing to say there. As for when I poured the beer into my pint, it had a pretty attractive look to it; very dark and retained a good head for a great length of time.
The smell was pretty good but nothing to write home about. Like that of a typical porter smell, it had a dark coffee smell with a subtle sweetness about it.
The taste: It was okay. Typically, when I drink darker beers I like a richer more full body taste. This beer was pretty thin.
Mouthfeel: As I said before, I like a more full bodied feel to my dark beers. This, I'd more closely associate with a black lager.
Overall: I'd drink this beer again but wouldn't send anyone out to try it.

The bottle was awesome. Appearance true to style, and it was dark rich mahogany, the smell was light, but too hoppy to style. taste was thin. no malt character, comparative to the hop notes. mouthfeel was thin and nonexistent. it was not as good as we expected.

It pours nice and dark. Not much of a head on it at all. Mild chocolate flavor, with a dark roast coffee taste that lasts on your tongue. Malty taste becomes more prevalent as it warms. Nice and light in mouthfeel, so it doesn't weigh you down or overwhelm your taste buds. A good go to Porter.

Pours a very impressive very dark brown with impressive frosty lace. The nose is more balanced than I expected in that I'm not overwhelmed by caramel and roasted, and can detect muted hops. Powerful, multifaceted taste with lots of intermingling flavors, with dark chocolate and roasted malts starting off before giving way to citrus and pine hops. Thick texture allows for maximum saturation of flavor and long aftertaste. Too hoppy for a true American porter, but an interesting and worthwhile hybrid.
