This beer pours almost black. It is highly carbonated, so much so that it's noisy. The cafe au lait -colored head dissipates quickly. t smells sour and tastes sour, and somewhat nutty.

I didn't note the anise flavor listed in the label description. I also don't miss the hops, even though I tend to love hoppy beers. Tastes true to the porter style, less dry than some.

Definitely worth trying, and I wouldn't turn it down.

First had: on tap at Barcade, Philly, PA

Dark brown/black pour, no noticeable carbonation, a thick beige ringlet around the top of the glass, but otherwise no head. Aroma of dark malts, anise, light cocoa. More of the same in the taste, dark malts, more sweet than roasty, light cocoa, anise, slightly cakey, notes of licorice, but no real bitterness. Porters aren't typically strongly hopped in the first place, but I'm not sure I'm all about replacing hops with anise...anise is okay in small quantities (or not at all), but not really as a featured component of a beer, in my opinion. Just makes it seem like something is off at all times, even if you're expecting the flavor to be in there. Pretty thin mouthfeel, about medium-bodied. On the plus side, the higher ABV was barely detectable.

If I could chime in with another opinion, I'd venture to say this beer might improve a lot if served on nitro. But otherwise, I'd probably never want to get this again.

On tap at Pinocchio's in Media, PA into a pint glass.

A Pours a pitch black with a one finger dark tan head, shrinks to ring fast.

S Smells roasty, way malty, with very obvious anise.

T Anise all the way, quite sweet, with some dark malts following through in the finish. It's like a fresh batch of pizelles right out of my nanas iron.

M Quite thin with very lightly carbonation. There's a twinge on tip of the tongue drom the spiciness.

O A total sipper for dessert, unlike my nanas pizzelles which go very quickly. Good first impression, but sits in my stomach kinda heavily, better that I take my time. Still good, but reminds me of a soda.

growler fill right from the brewery.

appears black, with ruby highlights at the edge. cream colored 1/2" head. aroma is of black licorice. the brewer indicated star anise was used.

taste is roasted malt of a typical porter, but with the anise as the alternate bittering agent, instead of hops. definitely interesting.

nice thick body, smooth mouthfeel. just enough carbonation.

overall, if you're looking for a unique take on the porter style, seek out this beer. Prism seem to think outside the box on all of their brews. Unfortunately, anise isn't my favorite spice, so after 2 or 3 pints, it gets a bit overwhelming. So not really a "sessionable" beer for me.

Appears a dark brown nearing black with a small tan head that quickly fades into a gentle film and bubbly collar. Scattered bits of lacing droop down into the sides.
Smell is of anisette biscotti, freshly baked wheat bread, and cocoa powder found in the background.
Taste is of the aromas with star anise being the standout in this one with a touch of fruity yeast and cocoa nibs complmenting the malt profile.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, chewy, with an herbal anise flavor lingering in the swallow. This is not a "chugging" type of beer. This is a brew that you pair with an Italian pork sandwich, or a dessert plate of pizzelles. Kudos for trying something different and making it work.
