This is an enjoyable beer, nothing wrong with it, several good points.

Dark beer. not thick, higher ABV as expected

One of the nice things is the extra flavors you get with this bock, not bland, some roasted raisons in there, very smooth after taste. Easy to drink, ...it went down pretty quick.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Firestone restaurant pint glass
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2.19
Purchased: Feb. 22, 2014
Consumed: Feb. 28, 2014
Misc.: N/A

Poured a dark mahogany color with two fingers of bubbly tan head. Minimal foggy lacing along the sides of the glass. Below average retention.

Smelled roasted nuts, sweet caramel sauce, toffee, chocolate, wintry spices, cocoa nibs, slight bitter coffee beans and peppery spices.

Tasted cocoa nubs, chocolate, caramel, toffee, wintery spices, roasted nuts, slight crayon and faint bitter aftertaste,

Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average-to-soft carbonation. Long, smooth, warming finish.

A pretty decent beer overall. Great for the winter months. Would definitely have it again.

Surprisingly good American attempt at a German style that isn't filled with assinine "innovations" such as adding weird ingredients and such. Pours a nice black color in ordinary light, but is clearly a dark brown when held up to lighting. Good, tight creamy head of lace with small bubbles that remains for a long time. Nose is on the lighter side, but still gives a pleasant and appetizing bready quality. Good balance of malts, sweetness, and overall drinkability here. Nicely flavorful to savor, but can easily be enjoyed in a proper Mass stein with suitable fare. Glad to find this one.

A half finger of head on a dark brown colored body.
The smell is faint overall: roasted malt and candy.
The taste is good: roasted malt, bread, malt sweetness and a tiny lemon bitterness at the end.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation and medium body.
A nice, solid doppelbock.

dark, ruby around the lighter edges of the glass.
bland, almost non-existent smell.
taste is bitter, not much like the great german doppelbocks i am accustomed to. no sweetness whatsoever.
medium feel, kind of half-a$$ed kind of an attempt.
overall, i think i remember having another Sudwerk brew... and it was just kind of okay. this one only qualifies as a dopplebock .... in their brewery? it has none of the traditional characteristics except maybe a higher abv and it's dark(?)

This is a pretty decent doppel. That being said, it is not by any means outstanding. The beer pours a very average amber color, with a distinct note of barley. The beer has a hearty taste with its 8 percent alcohol, and the taste of sugar is abundant. The beer has minimal lacing and head and leaves a nice taste on the palette. Too bad Sudwerk discontinued their other beers, as their other beers were top notch.

Two finger off white head, some lacing. The beer is brown, with reddish tints, when held up to the light, you can see through it. Smells of malt sweetness and syrup. Tastes of the same, with a slight peppery quality. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light. Ok.

Bottled on 10/27/11.

Pours a clear super dark reddish brown with a 1 inch puffy khaki head that settles to a thin cap. Foamy rings of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of bready dark malt, dark fruits, and some sugar and spice aromas. Taste is surprisingly sour with dark bread and tart dark fruits. Some spice flavors linger on the aftertaste and provide a slight bitterness. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with an acidic mouthfeel. Overall, this just isn't a very good beer. I would very much enjoy the flavors if there wasn't such a prevalent sourness. The mouthfeel isn't doing much to help either. Perhaps there is some sort of slight infection going on with this one.

Poured from a bottle into a Pilsener glass.

Look – jet black in color, with about half a finger’s worth of khaki-colored foam that dissipates quickly.

Smell – malty smell, with maybe some fruit essences and/or spices. Maybe a touch of molasses. Not a strong hop aroma at all.

Taste – definitely malty, with a touch of a smoky flavor in the middle. Still not much of a strong hoppiness in the taste, but there is a tinge of bitterness toward the finish. Still maybe a bit of a molasses touch toward the finish as well. Aftertaste definitely permeates with bitterness.

Mouthfeel – pretty well balanced, but leans a little more toward the watery side.

Overall – Not a bad brew at all. It definitely has some character to it. Somewhat intriguing to think about while tasting.

Date code of 11181

Pours chestnut/mahogany with a thumb of tan head. Minimal head retention & lacing

S: Bready, dark fruittyness

T: Rich maltyness, with a hint of toffee, cocoa, & dryness up front. Some plummy notes mix with brown bread & molasses, a touch of brown sugar there as well, just a little herbal hop bitterness. Finishes bready, figgy, dryish with just a touch of licorice

MF: Rich, malty with subtle carbonation

A good, not great dopple. I will buy this from time to time, cheaper & fresher than most of the German stuff I get around here.,,

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a dark mahogany brown with a light white head, solid retention.

S: Heavy malt, dark bread, brown sugar.

T: Big malt flavours, never cloying which is nice. Brown sugar, some toast and roast. A nice elegant flavour.

M: Medium to full-bodied, soft easy carbonation, frothy and creamy. Not overdone, acidic or overly carbonated.

O: A good American made dopplebock. So many times they can be oversugarfied, but Sudwerk knows what they're doing. Sudwerk makes consistently good lagers so I'm not surprised.

A classic for us Sacramento/Davis locals. I must have been drinking this beer for 15 years. Also a good sign of the cold weather.

A: nice deep brown. Shocking little carbonation though, there is almost no head on this thing. Seems almost like a mistake. According to the bottling date is was only bottled a week ago.

S: Malts

T: Roasted malts on this one. hints of booze.

M: it's a lager

Overall: can't complain on this one. Goes great with cold weather.

Appereance - Pours nearly opaque brown, head retention is poor
Nose - Light toffee and malt. A little biscut and a little bit of bitter chocolate
Taste - Bitter coffee/chocolate malt, sweet dark fruits come in just after that. Toffee and bready, alcohol does show well, (maybe a little too well).
Mouthfeel - A little thin, not as full bodied.
Aftertast - Again, a bitter malty-ness, reminiscent of black or chocolate malt.
Overall - I feel there was too much or too many specialty malts used in the grain bill that over powered the Pilsner or Munich malts that normally shine through.
