Does everything have to be an IPA these days? Up until recently, Sudwerk's Maibock was a seasonal delight, one of the few authentic examples of the delightful German maibock style brewed in the US. Not anymore. The recipe's been changed, the beer has been re-branded as a "spring lager" (although it still says maibock on the label) and it tastes like just another run of the mill IPL.
A real maibock is a strong, malty lager with a pronounced munich malt flavor. It should have a balanced bitterness, and the hop flavor/aroma should be German noble hops. This beer has no munich that I could taste, and the strong hop flavor is definitely not from noble hops--tastes a lot like centennial, whatever it is.
If you like IPLs, you'll probably like this. Me, I'm just getting sick of the way everything has to taste like an IPA these days.

Pours to a nice lacy head and light amber color. Aroma is clean, sweet malt and a whiff of noble hops. Flavor is a blend of light, slightly toasty malts and balancing noble hops with a bittersweet finish. Mouthfeel is sugary and warming. Overall a very good maibock.

Sudwerk Maibock Lager
A- Light amber, beautiful thick head with lots of lace! Great carbonation, tiny bubbles. Looks great!
S- Hints of citrus over the malt, very nice.
T- GREAT balance! Light for a maibock, but wonderfully crisp and nice citrus hops for a German style. Good blend of West Coast hop and German Nobles…. it also hides it's alcohol well. I definitely like this one!

Quite attractive golden amber in the tall Aventinus weissebier glass. A nice foam with champagne bubbles. An interesting aroma of dried apples.
Seems to have a touch of tartness that is not particularly welcome. Rather bitter, and I'm not sure it should be that way either. Light body, only faintly sweet with a fruity taste. It has the bitterness of a Belgian style without the pleasant yeastiness, so perhaps there is a little bacteria doing its work on the residual sugar.
Sudwerk is conservative enough to say "best within 90 days" but alas, there is no bottling date. Spritzy enough, but not very drinkable. From the 12 oz bottle.

Bottled on 3/14/12.
Pours a clear orange with a 1/2 inch foamy tan head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt and some caramel-like aromas. Taste is of malt, slight caramel, and some herbal and grassy hop flavors. There is a mild bitterness on the palate that sticks around after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a hop edge that doesn't show itself in the aroma at all.

Is this beer German? Asian? Oh it's from Davis... figures.
A - Poured from an ethnically curious bottle with a thin, quickly gone head and light tangerine color.
S- Mild lemon-cleaner aroma with veggie hints and a that typical classic pilsner note that keeps it above "skunk" but with a little funk.
T - Flavors hit the palate with surprising strength. Rosy floral notes smothered with hints of buttery thickness. Playful give-and-take between malted sweet and bitter bite than interchange as the beer opens and warms. Orange rind on the backend caps off.
M - Thicker than the average "lightish" beer, with butter-cream notes that make this an interesting brew.
O - Deceptive, but overall with a try. I was pleasantly surprised that what looked like a cheap beer was anything but.
