On tap at the Tap Room in the Coddingtown Whole Foods in Santa Rosa.

A: Reddish, amber color. Small head with no retention or lacing.

S: A bit sweet. Malty. No hops. Appealing, but doesn;t really call out to me.

T: Malty, bready, sweetness. Not bad, simply nothing special.

M: Light to medium bodied. Good carbonation. One I could drink or chug very easily.

O: Decent. Not my favorite Marzen, but it does the job. I could see drinking a lot of these very easily, not that I would really be inclined to.

On-tap at the brewpub. Pours a dark amber color with good retention and lacing characteristics. Aroma is nutty, malty, with some mild fruit to it. Tastes of pecan, nutty, mild-moderate bitterness with a grainy finish. Rather inoffensive flavors but on the safe side. Medium body with a creamy carbonation that is proper. Easy enough to enjoy this, but too simple for my taste.

This is a good, solid marzen, with nice cgharacter if a little thin and subdued compared to some others.

Light borwnish copper, it has a small, off-white head soon shrinking to a thin ring, leaving wisps and a tiny bit of lace.

The aroma is toasted grain, light caramelly bread crust, some apple. It's mellow but good.

The taste has more, a nice, fairly wel-rounded body with good sweet-bitter balance, a light sweetness slightly dominating yup front morphing into a light, slightly spicey bitterness at the finish. It has toasty, slightly caramelised, grain with spicey-peppery finish, hints of citrus (lemony) and a light aftertaste of a little grain dominated by zesty citrus. It's zesty, solid but not oily at all.

This is my favorite beer to accompany my Undergrad Burger at The Graduate in Davis, even though the staff insists on mis-pronouncing Marzen.

On-tap it has decent head, nice burnt-orange color and a mildy spicy/woody aroma with hints of floral notes. Taste from draft is slightly different than the bottled version IMO, a bit more full flavored but with less bite. Mouthfeel is light and not overly bubbly. Very drinkable, great for watching a game with friends.

I've had a few of these recently and I quite like them. The pour reveals a deep amber color and a nice full head. The foam retains well and leaves lots of lacing around the glass. The smell is nothing special-- nothing really bad or off putting about it but nothing special. The taste is mild but really nice, it has a good balance of malt vs hops, neither being too pronounced. The carbonation level is right where it needs to be and the mouthfeel is great. This beer is very drinkable and goes well with food. I like Sudwerk because its local to me and I can get super fresh and tasty brews.

Pours a hazed copper. Off white head.
Smells of sugary malt and fruit. Possibly a light bit of toast.
Caramel and toast are big in the taste as well. A bit sweet and tangy from the yeast employed. Medium bodied, spritzy carbonated feel, perhaps a bit too aggressive. Overall this is an average Marzen.

Sudwerk Marzen Lager

A- Appearance is dark amber, very carbonated, and there is very little head.

S- Malty, piney hops.

T- Good carbonation, well rounded, very drinkable. Great session beer. I like that a local company (other than GB) is attempting this style. I will be bringing this one into the store because I've had requests for more marzens, and it seems to fit my client base.

This beer pours a bold, clear copper with a thin head but no lace. The aroma is caramel with bread crust and sweet malt. The flavor is heavy on the caramel with a hint of nuts and wood in the finish. It's mouthfeel is medium. Sudwerk Marzen is a good beer, works well on a cool night. Recommended.

nice color, easy to drink, slight bitterness but overall mostly satisfying and enjoyable. sudwerk doesnt seem to be a very large brew capacity, and its beer and menu selection will not load off the their website. extremely average beer....more like a 'session beer' and not indicative of the original scope of a real marzen....

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Look – dark amber color, clear, with about half a finger’s worth of foam that dissipates quickly.

Smell – more malty than hoppy, but past that, I can’t discern any other aroma.

Taste – still more malty than hoppy, but within in the taste lies a spiciness that’s not in the aroma. It’s not strong, but it’s there. Aftertaste is pretty bland.

Mouthfeel – well balanced, but still leans heavily toward the watery side.

Overall – not a bad tasting brew at all, but not at all interesting or intriguing.

Poured from a bottle with initially a good thick head which thinned out quickly, Amber colored lager, brewed with five speciality malts though they're not listed on the label.

A bland taste, slightly nutty, an easy drink that leaves no lasting impression.

A pleasant enough drink but not a standout.

Poured into a pint glass. Reviewed alongside Widmer Brothers Okto Festival Ale.

A: Slightly hazy amber with two-finger, off-white, creamy head that lasted a couple of minutes. Okay lacing.

S: Sweet caramel malt. Fruit. Some spice. Nice.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness. Caramel malt and fruit flavors to match the nose. Sweeter than most Oktoberfest ales I've had.

M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Silky smooth.

O: Sweet and smooth Oktoberfest. The appearance was a little disappointing, but everything else was quite good. I liked this slightly more than the Widmer Brothers.

Poured into a tulip glass. A deep amber color. A good finger of head that quickly broke down to a quarter of the size.
Strong orange and wet malt smell.
Taste apple, bread and a mild hop ending.
Low carbonation and a crisp medium body.
A good beer, nice to drink and wish about being at Oktoberfest. A little more malt in the flavor and body would really round this out as a Märzen.

Pours an effervescent caramel with one finger of tan head. Some head retention & lacing

S: Bready & fruity (apricot jam & marmalade )

T: Some apricot, caramel, leafy & woody hops up front. Slight boozey & soapy notes along with more apricot & woody notes. Finishes watery,

MF: Light/medium bodied, low carbonation

Didn't really like this as much I hoped, an average Marzen at best

Picked up a single from Abe's Cold Beer. This marzen has some kick. I'm reminded more of Spaten Optimator than classic O-fest/marzen like Hacker-Pschorr. That said, I still taste the mild roasted malts and sweet, slightly fruity caramel. There's just a little extra licorice, like you'd find in a bock. The body is almost on the thin side for the flavor, and there's a very very slight astringency, but otherwise this is a mighty fine beer. Check it out.

Bottled on 4/6/2011. Opened on 7/23/2011. Pours to to a thin off-white head and small bits of lace. Color is reddish-copper. Brilliantly clear. Aroma is a pleasant hit of Munich malt and a weird sour note with noble hops peeking through. It does not smell particularly bad, just not what I was expecting. Flavor is a nice toasty, dusty, MALTY flavor you would expect form a Märzen / Oktoberfest. But there is that sharp, cheese-like note similar to the aroma. Nice hop flavor and bitterness to balance it out. A bit drier than I was expecting. Mouthfeel is light-meduim and CO2 is moderate. Overall, this beer is good, just not quite what I would look for in this style. It could be a handling issue since the beer sat at room temperature for at least three months.

Poured a coppery-brown with a short light tan head. No retention or lacing. Noticeable carbonation while looking through light.

Very pleasant on the nose. Nice sweetness. Caramel malt, burnt sugar and maybe a hint of sweet fruit.

Caramel malt right off the bat. Very well balanced with malt to mild hops. A very nice, cool hint of burnt sugar like cotton candy. It's sweet, but definitely not too sweet or heavy like sweet malty beers can be.

Mouthfeel Is very smooth, medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Overall I think this might be the best märzen/Octoberfest style beer. I very much see this being a great session beer come September-October.

Thanks to PaulStoneAnchor for sending me this one.

Pours a clear dark copper/orange color with a small 1 inch bone colored head that fades to a film on the top of the beer. No lacing on the drink down. Smells of malts, cooked veggies, and slight hops. Very faint smells all around. Taste is pretty average. There is a biscuit taste with some floral hops on the finish. Very slight bitterness after each sip. Surprisingly good mouthfeeel. Good carbonation makes for a crisp and clear feel with each sip. Overall, this is a decent but pretty average marzen. Good to try but I won't get this one again.

12 Oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

A - Pours with a good amount of tan-colored head. Small amount of lacing. Clear, deep mahogany color.

S - A pleasant aroma of malt and yeast.

T - Not a very complex tasting beer. Flavor composed mainly of toasted malt and mild caramel. Not much in terms of aftertaste.

M - Medium to full bodied. Creamy on the top and average amount of carbonation.

D - Very drinkable due to the lack of any foul odor or aftertaste. Though it could probably use a little more flavor.

Huge thanks to arbitrator for this beer. The extra effort is greatly appreciated.

Poured into my pint glass the beer is clear golden amber. About one finger of light beige head fades rather quick leaving no lace.

The aroma is very sweet. Caramel malt, vanilla and spices meld with the typical modest hop profile of marzens.

The flavor is mostly spiced malt with hints of vanilla and grassy hops. Right about where a marzen should be.

Medium to light body. A touch thin with low carbonation.

Overall a decent marzen. Nothing special but drinkable. Very glad I got to try this one though.

12 oz. brown bottle served in a pint glass. Pours a clear copper amber with a thin off white cap and a light effervescent carbonation. Retention is a bit brief though the carbonation does support a light cap..

Moderate caramel dominates the nose and is accompanied by a light and earthy hop presence. Taste is slightly sweet of caramel yet not nearly as overwhelming as many of the style, and without the syrupy feel and finish. Bit of roasted malt is evident as well due to the relatively light residual sweetness, along with some blood orange on the finish. Feel is light in body yet full enough and matches the flavor.

Good drink for the style though a relatively light interpretation. Yet that suits me well.

Faint aroma of honey and caramel, very reserved.

flavor follows the aroma with a light caramel upfront, fairly smooth and malty finish, a little watery on the finish.

Pours a translucent cherry-amber with a thin head that doesn't feel like sticking around. Doesn't have much of a smell--subtle bread and honey, but that's about it. Has a nice, smooth burnt honey taste, with a heavy malt finish. Unremarkable mouthfeel--relatively carbonated I suppose. It's possible to put a few of these down, but I don't know how badly you'd want to.

All in all a decent marzen.

Clear light brown colored beer with a small tan colored head that doesn't last.

Smells sweet and malty with lots of caramel and vanilla scent. No real hop scent; this is pretty much all malt.

Starts out Sweet and a little woody. Malty without being sweet I pick some vanilla here and caramel, makes we wonder if oak was involved some how. Hops are just about right to balance all the malt.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Drinkability is OK. This isn't too sweet, but it is too sweet for regular consumption to me.
