No bottle date that I can detect.

A: Nice golden color. Trransparent. Vigorous carbonation rushes to the surface. Finger and a half of bleached head with fairly rapid dissipation. Retention is minimal.

S: Nice maltiness. Very biscuit or bread like. Hops come through and are very noble smelling. Herbal, lemon, some sulphur, a little bit of saltiness.

T: Nice bit of malt in the front. Very crackery. Saltiness kicks in. Little bit of toasted character in the malt. Mid palate takes on a bit of a sour turn. Lemon, some green apple skin. Saltiness maintains (think saltine). Transitions threw to a fairly herbaceaous bitterness. A soap like citrus is also in there on the end. Very dry finish, with virtually no aftertaste other than bitterness.

M: Light, refreshing. Vigorous carbonation may be a distraction to some.

O: Pretty good pils. There is a strange element with the lemon/soap, but it's not bad. Fairly bitter, as well. Would definitely pick up again.

Pours a mostly clear straw color with a chill haze. Little head and no lace. Aroma of bready malt, herbal hop and a bit of citrus. In the taste, pilsner malt and smaller, slightly citrusy hop character with lemon notes. Medium bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel on a pils that is easy to drink. Overall, this was a decent pils with good flavor.

I could easily drink the entire 6 pack. Some apple breaks through & slight peppery hops. Finishes crisp, bready, and maybe a hint of corn. A sweet taste to start, with not much hop at all.
Very drinkable. Milder German pils. Color is a very light yellow. This beer was better then I hat anticipated.

Privatebrauer Sudwerk Pilsner: Davis, CA

-ABV not on bottle (always bugs me), but it was a sample bottle, so you never know.

-Poured into a Sam Adams Beer glass

-Appearance: Fairly clear, wheat/straw colored, lots of carbonation visible. Thin head, expected more foam with the amount of carbonation seen.

-Smell: Doesn't smell as malty as I had expected. Actually, it smells more like a corn based beer product. Tried desperately to smell -anything- (and I have an excellent sense of smell, I taste for a living!) Just not much there.

-Taste: Light, crisp, hint of florality, which was sadly missing in the smell. Much better than the smell would have let on. Good carbonation, a little sweet on the finish. I actually very much enjoyed this beer, I just wish the smell had matched the body.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewery.

A: Pours a clear light golden yellow color. Small bubble streams rise to the top, giving it a lively appearance. A creamy, one finger, white head sticks around for quite some time.

S: The first scent that I pick up on is a corn and grainy aroma. Not very inviting. Luckily, some grassy, floral and barley aromas come through, but aren't enough to come through significantly against the overpowering corn smell.

T: Strong floral tastes come through initially. Grains and barley follow and it leaves a slight grassy aftertaste.

M: It has a medium body on the lighter side. A moderate amount of carbonation fits well. And it has a sort of oily feel.

O: Not a bad pilsener offering. The smell is a little off putting, but the other aspects are solid. An above average pilsener.

Bottled on 1/1/12.

Pours a slightly hazy light gold with a 1/2 inch foamy off-white head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Tiny streaks of lace form sparsely around the glass. Smell is of grain/bread and some fruity and grassy aromas. Taste is of grainy malt with slight fruitiness and some herbal hop flavors. There is a mild bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a crisp level of carbonation with a prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good pilsner that is easy drinking and quite tasty.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a stemmed small clear glass goblet. Best by 12 12 11 stamped on label. Single purchased at Zain's Liquors for $2.25.

A: Clear golden with fine carbonation and short 1/2-finger white tightly bubbled head with solid retention and lacing.

S: Sulfuric and minerally with a crackery grain character and grassy, herbal noble hopping. Right on target for style.

T: This is an excellent version of a sharp German pilsener with a crackery, dry pale malt base with clean, crisp, and moderately bitter noble hops with a mineral, sulfuric finish.

M: Crisp and moderately dry with light-medium body and medium carbonation to keep it clean.

O: I think the sum is greater than its parts -- this is an exceptional pilsener with just the right balance of sharp bitter hopping with crackery maltiness to hit the German version of the style on the bulls eye. Nice job Sudwerk. I would love to get a fresher version the next time around.

poured into SA patented Boson Lager glass...

A: great clarity through a yellow golden brew with a 2 finger white head. retention is okay, leaving a thin sheet of bubbles. also leaves good lacing.

S: smelled the herbal and earthy noble hops as soon as i popped the cap. this beer is spicy, buttery, and doughy, which i think sums up what a true czech pils should smell like. Damn close to my favorite czech pils, Pilsner Urquell.

T: grainy, breadsy malt upfront, however not as doughy or buttery as the aroma. Hops take the mainstage here, again spicy and herbal with more of a lemon peel twang. long and bitter hoppy finish.

M: soft, medium body pils with a fizzy carbonation, finishing off dry and slightly sticky

Overall, this is a pils that attempts to capture that authentic czech flavor and does so very well. It's hoppy character is not to the point of overload, but remains enticing enough to satisfy even the biggest hopheads. This beer is reasonably priced and reasonably drinkable. Would buy again. Cheers

Pours an effervescent light gold with 2+ fingers of pearl colored head. Great lacing & head retention

S: Grassy, perfumy, slight bready notes

T: Follows the nose, some dryness, soapyness & crackery notes up front.Hay notes mix with some apple skin & peppery hops. Finishes crisp, soapy & somewhat bready

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation & great balance

A well put together Pils that goes down so easy, I close my eyes & I think I'm back in Germany, well done!

OK, so this is a milder German pils, more along the lines of Bitburger than Prima Pils. The aroma and flavor are heavy on the light but toasty malt, but there is a little spicy lemon in the finish. There's a decent balancing bitterness and fine drinkability. This beer is just on the more approachable, less bitter end of the style spectrum. That is to say, it taste a like a good, but not very bitter German pils.

Pours to a one-inch head and straw-gold color. Moderate lacing. Aroma is spicy Saaz hops and decocted Pilsner malt. Flavor is a balanced blend of noble hops and pale malt to balance the hoppiness. Mouthfeel is average. Overall a very good Pils. It is one of the better domestic German Pilsners around.

Brewed on 4/13/11 but smells and tastes fresher than most local pils I get. Pours a pale straw colored light yellow golden hue with a big bright white head. Fine speckled lacing forms on my pilsner fluted Miller High Life glass. Aroma is herbal, citric/grassy, with hints of flowers going on amongst a pale malt base. Extremely drinkable pilsner perfect for the style, really nice honey biscuit malt sweetness underneath the noble hop bitterness with herbal lemon grass Saaz notes balancing out the pale malt sweetness. Mouthfeel is light bodied with ample easy going carbonation, dry finish with the hops doing their job. Overall a quality beer that I may have to seek out by the case I haven't seen it around but it was available at D'z I'm going to check distribution and order a sampler or a case of this.

Mouthfeel: light bodied average beer.

Very light color. Nicer than average head, and what you'd hope for in a pale lightweight beer. Main impression is the sharp, acidic flavor. Lingering bitterness. Best quality is a spiciness. Touch of raspy flavor along with the hoppiness. Very light body with not much mouthfeel.

An odd beer to be served in cask, I thought, after tasting it. Serves up warmish, which is probably not ideal for an overly crisp lager style. I have not had this in the bottle. but probably would be better for carbonation and chilling.

Poured a translucent pale golden yellow with a thin head and left a little bubbly lacing sticking to the glass. The aroma was pretty variou grains with citrusy, sweetness from the malts, and slight spice. The taste was more citrusy with very very mild hops, grainy character, and mild dry zesty notes. The brew was light in body with a moderate amount of carbonation which had a sweet, mild hoppy, citrusy, and dry finish. It drank good but was too dry for me considering it was a pilsner.

A: Pours a nice golden yellow although the head did not stick around very long which doesn't seem to be very characteristic of a German pilsner.
S: Hoppy with some yeast and a slight floral touch.
T: Similar to the smell. The residual sweetness was very apparent initially. Kind of grainy not so much in texture but in taste. Oddly reminded me of cereal.
Overall: Pretty good pilsner although there wasn't so much of that spicy floral taste/smell I've come to expect from pilsners.

Thanks goes to arbitrator for this beer. Another one of your extras. Poured into my pint glass the beer is crystal clear super pale yellow. Freakishly pale. A huge two fingers of bright white head almost escape the the glass. After settling the glass is covered in thick lace webs.

The aroma is full on saaz hops. Which of course imparts a corn like aroma for me. Light citrus and fresh cut grass as well. Just a touch of biscuit malt in the finish.

The flavor is a shadow of the aroma. Light saaz hops and a bit of grass. That's it. Basically flavorless.

Light crisp body with a good amount of carbonation.

Overall another loud barker with no bite. Maybe the bottle is old but I only have one so I have to stick with my review for now.

Pours pale crystal clear straw with little ring of white head.

Aroma is a nice noble hop aroma with some yeast character as well.

This is a well made pilsner, hop character plays on the sides of the tongue, while remaining a fairly smooth easy drinking lager. Possibly not the most interesting beer but would be pretty refreshing on a hot day. leaves a pretty strong noble hop flavor in the mouth after the sip.

12oz bottle from Whole Foods Los Altos.

Pours a really damn pale straw color with a one-finger white head and good lacing.

Aroma is grassy hops, pale malt, and some graininess. Very nice.

Flavor is good but just a little buttery. Pale malt and grains with a nice hop bite which is very grassy and a little floral.

Crisp on the palate with medium-light body and some real hop bitterness.

This isn't a favorite of mine overall, but for the style it's very solid.

On-tap at the brewpub. Pour is a clear pale straw color with a meager bubbly white head with little lace. Aromas of straw, with light floral notes. Tastes grassy with straw and lots of earth with some biterness. Light to medium bodied with a robust carbonation. Nothing really special here, a little bland for a pils.

A very pale yellow colored beer with a tall white head.

Smells of toasted malt and toasted grain. Some lemon and a mineral herbal aroma. There is a spicy hay aroma here that almost smells like saffron.

Starts out with a hard water flavor and a bread yeast and hay flavor. Strong hop flavor and some bread pudding malt flavor. Reasonably hi hop level, more herbal than spicy though.

Mouthfeel is good.

Pretty good drinkability. Strong herbal Pilsener that was no problem at all drink.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pilsener glass. Pours clear pale gold with a fluffy white head leaving some spotty lacing. Aroma is nice fresh bread, none of that corny character you get with lesser pilseners. Very bread crusty. Flavor is grainy and bready with light floral hops, maybe even a miniscule fruity tinge. Not really a snappy crisp beer; body is a tad bloated for the style. Minor bitterness, a little sticky on the finish. Nothing special.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a classic clear golden, with a soft white head, great clarity.

S: Floral Saaz hops, moderate intensity.

T: Soft, sweet bready malt matched with a floral hop bitterness. Flavourful and well balanced.

M: Light-bodied, smooth, crisper than the Helles.

D: I probably like the Helles' flavour more, but this beer is and all-around better lager IMO. Classic European flavour and look, good job by Sudwerk.

This brew is a pale straw color that is almost totally see-through. A big frothy head leaves good lacing and retains as a ring throughout the session. Aromas of fresh-cut grass. Flavors are really refreshing and clean, similar to the aromas. There's a bit of metallic that pulls through, but it doesn't pull much from the fact that this beer is really refreshing. Light mouthfeel and easy on the palate makes this a good pils for summer and BBQing.

Appearance: Poured with a small white fizzy head that dissipated leaving no lacing on my glass. The beer is a very light yellow and totally clear.

Smell: Sweet fruit, pears, fresh flowers, basic caramel malt.

Taste: Sweet fruit, pears and white grape, light citrus hops, floral flavors, sweet honey ending.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nice carbonation, sweet syrupy/sticky, refreshing.

Overall: Good drinkability, very sweet, pretty refreshing, even tastes good as it warms up, which many pilsners don't. Nice subtle flavors, a little sweet though.
