DISCLAIMER: a friend of mine has a financial interest in Longman & Eagle

I was lucky to be invited to a friends and family preview of a new bar, Longman and Eagle in the Logan Square neighborhood. We sampled about half the menu, with the four of us at the table sharing. The highlights for me were the Kobe cheeseburger, the butter-poached catfish, and the marrow bones.

The service was amazing. Our waitress was knowledgeable, attentive, and extremely professional. I have not had service this good anywhere without playing at least twice as much for entrees. Perhaps this is because it was friends/family preview, but I'll definitely be back and update this review if warranted.

They currently have 12 taps, all craft and import except one (PBR). They were highlighting the locals with two Goose Islands and Half Acres. They also have McAuslan Stout, Bell's Brown, Maudite, and some others that I can't remember. They have about 60 bottles, with plans to go to about 100. I remember a good selection from the Trappists, as well some nice stuff from Bell's, Dogfish Head, etc.

After dinner, I was introduced to the bar manager, Jim. During our conversation, he said he was looking forward to getting some Surly on tap, as well as being hopeful about expanding the bottle selection. He used to work at Delilah's, and has a great whiskey expertise, which will help him choose the 100+ bottles of bourbon & rye that they plan on stocking. But this is a beer site, so I'll keep it focused.

This place is definitely a high class, foodie-approved destination. The interior is minimal and modern pub-style, but the cuisine and service will let you know that this is more than just a corner bar. I love the raw wood ceiling; it's a classic Chicago touch that keeps the noise level from getting out of control.

Logan Square is turning into quite the beer destination for Chicago: Longman and Eagle, Small Bar, and soon Revolution Brewing.

Also worth mentioning: there's a huge public parking lot across the street.

Nice laid back feel with a comic book store a few stores down if you need to kill some time before they start serving at 5PM. My wife and I got there at 4 and had a few drinks while waiting. A mix of old and young crowds we ended up in a very energetic conversation about West Wing and Battlestar Galactica. So you can find liberals and sci-fi geeks here.

The food wasn't anything special. My burger was alright but my wife who's the foodie was let down by the sear on her foie as well as a funky Twinkie dessert. She did love the marrow though.

Tap-wise it was a mix of foreign and local offerings. I had 3, 3F Pride and Joy - one for each of the Floyds.

The highlight here was the service. We sat at the bar and the bartender had plenty of time for us despite being very busy. Attentive and knowledgable as well has "seems like a nice dude"-ness.

We were letdown by L&E. The food was the least impressive of our mid-west trip and that includes a WI dive-bar, an IN brewpub and a few more less highly esteemed Chicago restaurants. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't what we were expecting from a Michelin rated pub.

Longman & Eagle is another in the line of fairly recently opened, exceptional beer/cocktails bars in Logan Square but what really sets this place apart is the Michelin starred menu. It's a tightly packed bar to the right and small tables to the left when first walking in with more tables in a room toward the back. The front room is dark wood with a classic bar vibe. There's always a buzz in this place, people happy about their drinks and food while chatting away about the day/Chuck Taylors/fixed gears.

The taplist isn't the longest in the city but it is well thought out with a solid showing from the locals. Whiskey list is top notch and the cocktails are some of the best in the city. The quality of ingredients in the food and cocktails are second to none and the beer seems to be very well looked after. I prefer eating and drinking at the bar where you can chat up the bartenders and they'll put together drinks on the fly based on whatever you're in the mood for at the moment.

The food, again, is as good as it gets for a place I can wear a t-shirt and shorts. The small plates are great to share with a few people while the brunch and entrees are out of this world good. This place is food first with a good beer selection. Get there early or with the fewest amount of people possible.

Another Chicago standout, though it seems a bit under the radar based on the number of reviews on this site anyway. We took about a mile walk up Milwaukee Avenue after brunch at Revolution Brewing, hung a right at Kedzie and there you find it. We liked the vibe immediately. Laid back but friendly, gritty but still appealing.

Tap list is a bit smaller than some other places in town but the Zombie Dust was pouring so that's all I needed. We did not eat on our first visit but went back for an early breakfast on a Monday (there is a small inn above the place so they are open for all three meals). Cocktails were on the menu for Vickie and Joel that day but I stuck with beer. Food was really good, service was nice.

If you're near there, go there (and it is just to blocks from the Blue line if you're not that near).
