12 oz bottle, 7% abv. Deep mahogany, chocolate color. White head provides a nice contrast, but fades a bit too quickly.

Toffee, milk chocolate and a touch of roasted malt in the nose. A dark bread aroma from the malt. Love it so far.

A little more roasty up front. Chocolate feel is a bit more bittersweet and dark. A bit of toffee. Good amount of bitterness at the end, as it dries out.

Medium body, a much fuller feel than I anticipated. Maybe some slight warmth from the alcohol.

Overall, a nice beer. Nice complexity here. Worth a try.

A - Pours a deep brown with almost two fingers of brown head. Head has great retention and leaves nice lacing.

S - Chocolate and roasted malts. A bit earthy.

T - Taste has a nice intensity. More roasted and earthy malts than the smell, with less chocolate. A bit of noticeable alcohol but not bad. Some light hopping. Pretty enjoyable.

M -- Medium-full mouthfeel that finishes earthy with light lingering bitterness.

O - My first beer from peoples and they are off to a good start. A very flavorful brown ale with some minor flaws. I'd have it again.

Hmm, this "imperial brown ale", pours a very dark, almost black. Head is limited, and I get no lace whatsoever.

Nose comes across as boozy at first (it is a sturdy 7%, after all), followed by some dark chocolate and fruit notes. Nice.

Flavor is chocolate, with some roasted nuttiness in the finish, as well as a slight alcohol heat.

This heavy-bodied brown ale isn't bad, but left me unimpressed in the end. Not one I'd pursue again.

On tap at The Mark.

A- Pours a rich milk chocolate color. Half finger tan head dies quickly to just whisps of foam on the top of the head. Light sheety lace is left on the glass.

S- Chocolate malts with a light roast to it in the front of the aroma. Stale alcohol notes in the ending of the nose cuts into the light bitter sweetness of the aroma. The hops didn't really come out much but in muted bitterness.

T- The front of this beer as some light roasted malts with sweet alcohol and bittering hops. Middle of the beer has more sweet chocolate tones to it with some more roasted malts come in the backend. There is a very light bitter hop in the ending with medicinal alcohol really breaking through the backend.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is light for the beer and style. Bitter hops and alcohol is left on the palate. Aftertaste is medicinal alcohol, faded bitter hops, and bitter baker's chocolate. Medium drying on the palate from the alcohol. This beer is balanced fairly well to the style with the malts coming out on top very lightly. No real off flavors were present while drinking except for hints of strong medicinal alcohol notes on the ending at times.

D- This beer had some good things going for it and at the same time was lacking some things that could have made it taste a lot better. The ABV although low (I am guessing) seems to taste a little higher with the medicinal taste. Not my favorite brown ale but this one wasn't bad at all.

Mr. Brown, an "imperial" brown ale pours with a very thin head, light foam after dying down, with little lacing. Smell is of rye, chocolate, medium roasted earthy malts, and spicy hops. Taste is solid with a rye like character, chocolate and light caramel notes up front, and a spicy hop taste that is more towards the bitter side of a typical porter on the finish. Decent mouthfeel, silky but bracing at the same time. Overall a decent porter, although reminds me more of a rye porter. Not the best I have tried, but a good middle of the road style beer. The hops throw myself off, but for a hop head it is a good one.

A - Chocolate color with a tan head that dissipates quickly.

S - Again chocolate with some caramel notes.

T - A lot hoppier than most browns. Has a slightly sweet taste upfront and then the bitterness from the hops follows. Good tint of alcohol throughout.

M - A bit lighter than similar beer in this style, but still has a bit of bready thickness to it.

D - Browns aren't my normal style, but this beer went down incredibly smooth. Would've gladly had another if I didn't have to drive later.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown color with a moderate tan head on it. Nose some some roasting to it with a slight malty sweetness coming through underneath. Taste is actually a little toasty with some elements of coffee to it. Definitely has a bit to it, but is fairly inviting. Interesting...

Trying out the local fare in Lafayette, once again. After having the wonderful Flying Duchess IPA, I was in a People’s mood once again. This time around: Mr. Brown, their brown ale.

Poured from a nitro-tap into a pint glass at Chumley’s in Lafayette, IN.

A: Say what you want about nitro-tapped beers, but they sure look great. This one has a slow, reverse-cascading head that build to a ridiculously creamy three fingers. The retention stays for as long as the beer sits in the glass, a tan inch of what literally looks milk (with just the slightest hint of tan color). Thick lacing covers everything over the deep mahogany body, which shines with a reddish light.

S: Smells a bit like chocolate milk, but with an even subtler aroma: chocolate-covered caramel and a pinch of lactose sugar. It’s probably the mildest nose I’ve ever experienced on a brown ale; just a touch of floral hops and toasted graininess, with minimal roast undertones. Slightly earthy.

T: Great mix of bitter and smooth sweet tastes, but the first hit is all hops: piney, spicy, and popping with light, resiny earthiness. A quick movement of the roasts causes a nice melding of the brighter bitters with dark chocolate, dry coffee, and bread crust astringencies of the body underneath. It keeps the palate in a constant state of sizeable bitterness, only to be extinguished by the caramel, chocolate soft-serve ice cream, and creamy malted milk sugariness. Good balance, but with a tangy Milk Dud aftertaste that leaves a little more to be desired; finishes creamy other than that hang-up.

M: Very rich, very creamy, so much that it can a little hard to drink at times. It has a milky taste and aroma, so the feel of lukewarm milk doesn’t help the appetite. I’d probably like it better from the bottle.

O: A pretty good brown ale from People’s; not stellar, but tasty and inoffensive. This is one of those brews that I’d give to someone who wasn’t familiar to craft beer, and I’m sure they’d like it.

a perfect taste!

I've been getting growlers of this for over a year now & it's never disappointing.

Lafayette may be famous for Axl Rose and Shannon Hoon but Mr.Brown is also a rock star!

L - brown (almost black) with smallish head that drops quick.

S - Malty smell with some alcohol and hops...you are not overwhelmed at all by the 7.00% ABV.

T - what hits you first & in what order? Coffee, malt, caramel, toffee, roast ,hops, earthy, sweet roasted flavor and then don't forget our Indiana water!

M - Medium mouth-feel as if with a caramel/very slight coffee like finish.

A unique american brown ale that seems to almost want to be a porter. The malt/hops mix make it perfect. I really dig this one in the winter...but anytime is nice too!

Also, going there on Wednesdays and getting a $2 off growler for this beer always puts you in a great mood...(in bottles,it also rocks!& like "mound builder",the label/artwork are very cool)...& the latest issue of "Beer Advocate" is always there on the counter to read while waiting on the growler...

Cheers!
