I think this beer is a bit confused. Calling it a brown ale is also a bit of a misnomer. Up front, it has plenty of sweetness and malt flavor as one would expect, but the hops dominate the finish enough to taste like a pale ale. Instead of striking a balance between bitter and sweet, it seems to be both just at separate times, making for a very odd and confusing flavor that I did not enjoy. The people I tried it with were also a bit confused by the dichotomy of flavor, and none of us went for a second bottle.

I am enjoying a 2-week "spring break "....as a close -to- retirement- age teacher with nobody here because the wife flew with one of our sons down to see our other (Navy pilot) son off for deployment from NAS Jacksonville to Sicily...... and then up to see her parentals in South Carolina. SO... I have been splurging on the " pick a variety of individual beers to put in a 6-pack" deals. .....explaining how you will see so many new reviews in the near future. Sorry about the personal history here. I thought Bells Best Brown could not be beat, but this one is Soooo dark (major head if not very carefully poured) sweet smelling/tasting and smooth. This, like the Bells brewery, (also 3 Floyds) is an outfit within a 100 mile radius from my location....I'm lucky to get brewery fresh stuff from all of these guys.

The malt backbone of this brew is incredibly well-attenuated by hop-flavor. While very malty on the palate, it is not sweet on account of its hopping. Rather than cancel each other out, however, hop-bitterness and malt-sweetness dance in harmony, neither overshadowing nor overpowering the other. The nose follows the palate, and this beer is almost as dark as a Porter and features a creamy mouthfeel. This beer is incredibly well balanced and as interesting as it is delicious.

12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass
A - A moderate pour produces a thick foamy, almost creamy, head that is dark tan in color and dissipates very slowly. The remaining head, after dissipation, forms a creamy ring around the glass with a very light creamy layer over the top of the beer (slightly more than a lacing). Beer itself is an extremely dark brown, borderline black with small carbonation bubbles visible rising moderately quickly towards the surface of the beer. 4.25/5
S - The aroma is very heavy with roasted notes but there is some sweetness that comes out as well. Notes of milk chocolate, caramel, leather, brown sugar, and dark roasted cereal grains come out rather well. Slight herbal hoppiness as well provides another earthy character to the aroma. 3.75/5
T - Brown sugar and toffee sweetness up front immediately transition into a milk chocolate note along with espresso. Roasted cereal grains come out along with the espresso in the middle prior to the hops come out. Lingering herbal hopbitterness combined with a black coffee bitterness provide an interesting fresh versus roasted dichotomy to the end of the flavor profile. 4.25/5
M - Slight carbonation burn along with a pop rocks sensation showcases the carbonation in this beer. Despite the carbonation there is an element of creaminess throughout the profile that provides a smoothness to the beer. Medium-full bodied with a lingering dryness that is not overly dry, but enough. 3.75/5
O - Well balanced brown ale that strikes a fine line between sweet and bitter. Roasted flavors really come out with a bit of sweetness that cuts the bitterness. Fairly heavy but not too heavy to not have a couple. 4/5
