12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to Billakowski for sending this as an extra.

A - Pours a cloudy amber with flecks of red and brown and even with a somewhat aggressive pour, a little less than a finger's worth of light tan head appears. Low retention with this head with only a few bubbles sticking around afterward. The lacing isn't bad either on this beer.

S - The nose is refreshing and crisp, at first delivering fresh grapefruit and citrus with some pine resin. A little bit of caramel malt comes through, but not a whole lot.

T - Unfortunately the flavor deviates from the promising nose and turns into a sweet, malty IPA that doesn't accentuate the great characteristics from the nose. The hops, rather than being juicy and full of citrus, are instead bitter and spicy while the malt backbone springs to life to take over. It's bitter, sweet, and much too malty for my liking.

M - Mouthfeel is medium- to heavy-bodied with lowish carbonation. Definitely feels a bit heavy especially given the sweetness and syrupy feel.

D/O - Drinkability is moderate. I had some nice hopes for this beer after the aroma, but the taste just doesn't live up to those expectations after deviating from what made the nose so great. It actually almost comes across as a hopped-up barleywine in the taste.

Deep and cloudy opaque amber, with light carbonation and only slight lacing. A bit disappointing from this new semi-local brewery.

The aroma is enticing -- strong pine and grapefruit character. Excellent!

Taste is both bitter and sweet, and hangs quite strong on the palate. The 6.5% ABV is not detectable, as the flavors are so strong and overpowering. Something here seems out of balance. This beer isn't there yet, but I can see possible great things if this recipe is amended slightly...

Received as an extra in a recent trade. Visited this Indiana brewery last month, and was looking forward to trying this one.
Poured from 12oz bottle into imperial pint glass.

Aroma: Pine needles, pineapple, green peas (oddly enough), and some sweet honey.

Appearance: When I popped the cap, there was hardly any hiss whatsoever, and upon pouring this one into the glass, my fears were confirmed. A hard pour yields hardly any head, with no retention either. Body is hazy copper-amber.

Flavor: Again, the canned green peas are there again. I believe this is a combo between hop flavor and a possible DMS issue. The beer has very strong bitterness for an IPA. Not sure whether this is a batch issue or a brewer issue. Based on the beers that I tried during my recent visit, I'm definitely leaning toward a batch issue.

Mouthfeel: Very low carbonation, as mentioned above. Almost completely flat. Medium body. Hops are drying to the tongue.

Overall: Definitely a disappointment. I'll give this one another shot at some point, because I'd heard some great things about it from some BA friends. I had a great experience at People's, and want them to be better than this.

Had on tap....

A- Poured a amber color with golden overtones. One finger white head shows good retention. Nice streaky lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Bready malts with some light rye character dominates most of the aroma I think. Nice citrus hops used in this one to balance everything out.

T- Some light piney hops in the front of this gives good flavor. Middle of the beer is some caramel bready malts with some light rye to it. Nice bitter hops come about in the ending once again to give a good last uhmph to it.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation was a little light I thought. Citrus hops are left on the palate with bitter hops in the aftertaste with a kiss of alcohol. Hop forward beer that doesn't really get balanced overall. Lots of drying on the palate from the alcohol.

D- This beer is once again a one and done for me. It was good but destroyed the palate if you wanted another beer. The ABV on this isn't hidden real well but I would want to drink other things first.

A - Golden, slight head that dissipates quickly with a little lacing

S - American hops. Grapefruit and citrus.

T - Not much malt to back up the hops. I love hops, but that's all this is.

M - This is where this beer fails. Way too watery for the style. This may be good if it had any malt backbone to support the hops.

D - Light body would make putting down several of these easy, but why bother when it's at the low end of taste for an IPA.

12oz bottle from zrab11 (thanks man!). No identifiable bottle date. Served in a Southern Tier snifter.

Pours murky russet orange with one and a half finger near white head. A good bit of lace.

Smells like a hop biscuit. Plenty of piney and earthy hops backed by a noticeable malt sweetness.

No suprises in the taste, given how it smells. Very malt forward for an IPA with sweet bread, biscuit, pine, flower petals, a tad of garlic, a little pepper and bitter citrus peel. Quite bitter overall despite the malts.

Medium slick feel with quite a bit of carbonation. Long, dry, bitter finish.

In my opinion, Mound Builder is a mislabled red ale. From appearance to aroma to flavor, this is not what is expected for an IPA. Don't get me wrong- it's not bad at all but rated "to style" it can't hang. I would have given it much better ratings as a red.

Bottle. Pours a hazy dark amber color with a moderate off-white head on it. Nose is a little grassy, but does not have a lot of hop character to it. Taste is a little bit bitter, but not overly so, and has a strong malt backbone to it. Not a huge fan of this...

As a Purdue student, I’ve had my fair share of interaction with People’s Brewing Company; however, their Pilsner is the only one I’ve come across that has really impressed me. It had an especially nice hop profile, and that's why I’m excited for this IPA. I’ve only had their beers on-tap, too, so it’ll be another first for me. Let’s see how well these guys can do the bottle thing…

A: This one pours an impressively bright reddish-amber. Awesome color with just the right amount of shine. The head comes out a little dull, though, showing off nothing but a thin, bubbled cream. But the lacing is great...I don’t understand it. Whatever; it looks good.

S: Starts with a nice hop fruitiness; very succulent grapefruit and tropical notes. A hint of pine, and then the aptly named “caramalts” take over. Bready, sweet, and with a tinge of earthy spice – it reminds me a lot of carrot cake. Good aromas meld over a scent of minerals, like in well water, which form the base of this nose.

T: Great initial taste: the earthy malts hit first, with caramel smoothing neatly over the palate as the hops build in a bitter crescendo. It really takes you aback. As you start to drink more and more, though, you notice the bigger areas of frustrating imperfection: the slight skunk in the grains and hard-water tastes, mostly. The palate still has a lot going for it, though: chewy, flavorful malts and a crisp hop character are the most evident. A dry, yet smoothly sweet character takes its part in the aftertaste, leaving this one feeling great for a while.

M: As is the case with most microbreweries, I’m getting a slight wateriness. Not much, though – People’s has a way of packing just enough flavor in there to not make it too thin.

O: Best People’s offering I’ve had to date, and that includes the Pilsner. It’s encouraging to know that there’s a beer brewed in Lafayette that I could see myself buying in a six-pack later on down the road. Knowing that you’re supporting a local brewery is a great feeling, but it really comes down to taste in the end. Thankfully, these guys deliver.
