Trader Joe's Providential Belgian-Style Golden Ale
22 oz. painted brwon glass bottle, corked (printed Unibroue logo) and caged. 7.5% abv.
"Best Before 02.04.2015" - sampled 04.25.2013

Appearance: Hazy golden-orange body with pale gold highlights. The fluffy, full head of bright white drops steadily to a creamy finger-thick cap. Lacing is left with each sip but fades almost immediately.

Smell: Spicy. Herbal. Coriander. Gently yeasty. Quite welcoming.

Taste: Initially lemony & herbal - not quite tart, but with the flavor of lemon - fades to allow the sweet malt to come through. Adjunct?... it's not quite a grainy malt, but there is some. As it warms across the middle it reveals herbal, grassy and even gently pine-like hops (or is that a combination of the hops and spices already present?) that turn into a spicy finish. Some alcohol is present. Not very bitter... IBU's in the 20's, perhaps. Moderately dry finish with some residual yeastiness and dull spice lingering.

Mouthfeel: Effervescent, medium-light body. Crisp.

Overall: Quite refreshing and enjoyable. It's lighter in character than many, but still complex. Easy to drink! Especially so at the price.

750 ml bottle served in a Belgian snifter.

Trader Joes stamp or not, what we have here is a well-crafted Belgian style pale ale from a brewery (Unibroue) that consistently males great Belgian style beers. The fruity and yeasty aroma features yellow banana, citrus fruits and apricots, It is accompanied by a complex fruity and lightly spicy flavor. Hints of white pepper, allspice and ginger.

The medium body has champagne-like effervescence

O: excellent

750ml bottle: This one pours a hazy golden color. There was a bit of a fizzy white head on it that subsided quickly and left no lacing. It has a nice nose. Definitely a bit spicy: perhaps some corriander and ginger. I also get a bit of citrus. The taste is very good. A bit of spiciness on top. Actually a hint of bitterness in there. I know it’s not, but the body seems a little lighter for a 7.5% beer. A very good beer which I will buy more of. Unfortunately the TJ’s near me don’t carry this. Something to pick up on the next trip to ME or NH.
