It's amazing how great a great beer tastes when you drink it right after a lousy beer. In this case, both beers were from the same brewer -- I drank this bottle of Unibroue La Fin Du Monde right after a bottle of Unibroue U2. I guess the biggest positive comment I can make about the U2 is that it made the La Fin Du Monde taste so much better!
I poured the LFDM (acronyms rule) into a standard pint glass. Nice, cloudy golden colour with a 1/2 inch head. Looks like fairly low carbonation. Smell is strawberries, grapefruit, candies, peaches, some grass, and, of course, that patent, unidentifiable (at least to me) Unibrouey smell.
Taste is just great. Fruity, sweet hops, a bit of alcohol, and Unibroueyness. Yes, I'm inventing words left and right. Mouthfeel is cutting, with just the right amount of carbonation for me (i.e. not that much), and very little aftertaste.
For 9% ABV, this is a very drinkable beer. The type I could go through two or three of and then fall down.
Anyway, my theory is Unibroue released its one or two lousy beers solely to make its mostly awesome beers taste better. Smart, eh?
